Oculus Quest 2 - worth it?

Now I have the thing it doesn't look there's much decent stuff available free....

Anyone care to recommend something? Was thinking Resident Evil or Exorcist.

Are you PC streaming or playing natively?

Natively for now.

Onward and Contractors also look ok.
RE4 looks awesome. Not free though. One of my friends said there's a big community for ... oceanic themed games but I dunno about that. I mainly played PC streaming.

If you want free, best bet is too lol around at SideQuest.

It’s the alt store, most of it is free, some are there cause of active development or oculus refuses to let them on the official store like Pavlov (think css with more vomiting)

Honestly its worth every last cent in my opinion and was a godsend during covid.

I allmost exclusively use mine for VRChat, having the ability to sit in a room with my friends from all over the worlds (Germany, netherlands, US, UK etc...) was an amazing escape during covid.

I know it sounds weird but its on a whole different level to just discord calls, or texts, being with your friends and seeing their hand movements, basic facial movements etc... is just so much better.

I can highly recommend anyone try VRChat with some good friends, it has a ton of custom games aswell if socializing isnt your thing, and its free.

Edit: Also surprised no one mentioned Netflix or Bigscreen.
Netflix is amazing on quest, the screen is huge and you get about 3 hours of battery life with it, making it the perfect on the go media player when on holiday
Bigscreen has a few streaming services but you can load your own movies onto it, if you have some friends they can load the same media files on theirs and it will sync up the video streams so you can sit in a room and watch movies/series together, watched the entire first season of xfiles with my friend in germany was worth it :)

PS PC VR is the way to go, while the quest 2 is okay for standalone games, multiplayer and more indepth games really need a PC, you can scrape by with a GF1060 but it really wants something a bit more currently using a 3060ti but this is mainly due to streaming (twitch) which had about a 10fps loss when capturing.

Probably cause you the only one that uses it, I have an actual tv to watch it on. No need to watch tv with a thermal insulator on my face when I hav an actual tv

Actually stumbled on this yesterday.

Also discovered I'm going to need a bit more practice, ended up leaving with a massive headache and nausea.

And decided for these sort of games I'm going to need to print a gun stock, just holidng the controllers midair doesn't feel right.

Lastly, told my wife it'd be more realistic if I had a big emtpy warehouse so I don't have to use joysticks

PS. Not specifically looking for free. Just don't want to waste money on crap.

Nah I get that, but VR games are also somewhat short, especially when you get to story based games so comes from a PC, even if you have not played in a while the cost value feels way off.

I got the Star Wars little game pack and I’d have been way pissed had I paid full price for a 20 min game that was in effect 15min if “movie”

So, having had my quest 2 for just about a month now I can honestly say I have no regrets. Of course it is not perfect, nothing ever is, but I think this is the first time I can honestly see VR becoming truly mainstream. In the past I thought to myself things like PC VR are just too ridiculous in terms of the requirements and inconvenience. You need to set up cameras, have a cable tethered to you etc etc. Nevermind the barrier to entry in terms of cost. Heck, even if something like say the Valve index was the same price as the quest 2 I would take the quest 2 hands down. It is just so convenient to just pick it up and play. Cables suck. I've tried the HTC Vive at a friend's place and while it is pretty impressive it just felt tedious getting set up etc.

There are negatives though. The default strap that comes with the quest 2 is garbage, it may be okay for some folk in shorter play sessions but if you do alot of sport/fitness type games (anything with alot of movement really) that strap is just going to be no good. I would recommend looking for one of the many replacement strap options, I ordered a Kiwi will report back on it once I get it but reading other's reviews on it I would be surprised if I do not like it. A smaller complaint is the field of view is not that amazing but when you are in game it honestly isn't something you really notice as your eyes will be more focused on the center of the display area and you won't notice it unless you are actively looking out for it. Some folk will be bothered by having to link your facebook account, personally I am not too fussed about it but some folk are really concerned by it. If you are one of those who refused to have Whatsapp installed on your phone then you probably will be put off by this too. The larger concern I have is Facebook is rapidly building a monopoly on VR gaming, nobody can compete with the Quest 2 right now. But at the same time I do believe the competition will come, it is just a question of when not if. When it comes to gaming I have no loyalty, I will jump ship if a better option comes along, but that is probably some time away.

The games surprised me, there were genres I thought that would translate well in VR but did not and genres I typically do not touch on say a PC that I absolutely love in VR.

Sports physics based games are absolutely incredible. Eleven table tennis is so good it is like owning a table tennis table minus the space concern (Ok you need some space for your side of the table but that is nothing in comparison). You also always have someone to play against, either AI or online. As a kid I used to play a ton of table tennis, but in adult life I just could never justify using an entire room just for table tennis. But I have always wanted a table tennis table and I do now. It really approximates playing real table tennis so closely it is just nuts. Another game that I found amazing is walkabout Mini golf, which to me is better than any real putt putt because the course designs are just so interesting and fun. There is also plenty good in terms of fitness to be had with these sport games. For example, Thrill of the Fight is a boxing game that truly can and will test your fitness. As someone who exercises 5 days a week pretty much consistently this game managed to wreck me and that impressed me. The first couple of fighters are easy but the harder fighters you have to WORK for it. Punching speed matters so you have to put in the effort. There are no easy knockouts and going the full distance in a fight you will be dripping in sweat. Only con here is inbetween rounds you sometimes have to take the device off and towel yourself off but wearing a sweat band does help too. There are also many dedicated fitness apps but honestly I just play the boxing game if I want a genuine workout. I hit similar heart rates as I do in a real workout so that is good enough for me.

The genre I hated the most was racing games, I thought this would be something I really get into but it is just too much Vertigo for me right now. Perhaps when I truly develop my "VR legs" that I will change my opinion but I just cannot handle it right now. Have similar feelings about roller coasters and flight sims. Strangely enough running around in FPS games doesn't give me the same vertigo problem, not sure I can explain why. Speaking of which FPS works really well in VR. Half life Alyx is ridiculous, I know this isn't a quest game but I streamed it wirelessly from my PC and it blew my mind. There is that wireless thing again, you cannot do this with dedicated PC VR devices right now. The quest 2 is also a better option for PC VR than devices made for PC VR. I have similar feelings about Horror games, they are genuinely frightening. If you are scared of dark places I don't think you could actually complete these experiences, I honestly don't care for dark places but find myself feeling really creeped out in VR horror. Also, multiplayer experiences like VR Chat and A Township Tale are pretty insane. A Township Tale for example is essentially a survival MMO experience, the tutorial is not done well at all but what happens is people help each other figure things out, everything is voice chat and it really feels like you are in this virtual fantasy world interacting with real people. Give this video a watch:
would probably give you a better idea than I ever could.

Apologies for the wall of text I haven't even said half the things I wanted to say about the device but I genuinely believe it a great option if you are even mildly interested in VR gaming and it fits your pocket. Whatever you do though, do not order it locally from places like breakalot etc. they are all way overpriced. It is much cheaper ordering it from amazon (it cost me a shade under R7K shipping included), but I would suggest considering ordering a replacement strap at the same time or at least looking into it and not have to do two separate orders like I have, you will save a bit on shipping costs that way.

You probably don't have your tv attached to your ceiling. There are times where you may just want to watch something lying down and this is where I feel VR comes in (the other scenario would be travelling but unless you travel often it probably isn't a consideration). In a lying down position you don't have to put the strap on as tightly as gravity will just do it for you so it is more comfortable. I use Skybox VR personally though not Bigscreen (network shares, better features, better codec support). Also, 1080P in VR does not look that amazing. I found once I switched to watching 4K content that the clarity was improved to a point that I would actually say it looks pretty darn good. The quest 2 supports up to 8K video content but it is pretty tough finding 8K content. But look, you are right most of the time watching content on an actual TV or cinema is going to be a better option, but I would say mostly for social reasons. Also, 3D content in VR looks more 3D than any 3D cinema. All in all I just see it as another option, I mostly watch things on a regular TV and VR is more a gaming thing.

You got to do your research before buying, I made the same mistake with the Star Wars game pack. Fun experience for sure but you won't go back to it. Definitely have to watch a youtube video review or two before paying for anything. There absolutely are games that don't suffer from this problem, but the majority are short experiences. Not always a bad thing though when appropriately priced.

It's worth it. I just could not play for the last 6 months due to limited space.

My baby took my play area. We are moving so I will be playing again soon.

Beat saber and half-life alex are my favourite games.

I was lucky amazon sent me the 256gb version instead of the smaller one.

@Vanie you can delink it from your Facebook account. Not that it bothers me either. My Facebook account is so my wife can tag me, and I can try get attention from shitty companies.

I just realised Facebook requested me to join Facebook viewpoints, so they've been paying me $3 every two weeks for awhile now, and will be paying for my first game :D

Nice one! hopefully I get a similar option soon :)

As for delinking my facebook account is this a roundabout way or something officially allowed in the UI ?

It's an 'official' thing, at the moment you have to email or contact oculus support, but I believe a Facebook account won't be required early 2022.

On my phone, so can't find the actual news article on it.

I'm not sure if any of you have tried this but, recently i used virtual desktop for pcvr over the internet and the latency was not noticeably worse than being on local wifi, i was thoroughly impressed. For context, i was connecting with a 100mb line at the office to my gigabit line at home and latency to my pc over internet was 6ms~.

I suggest you first play games where you're standing in one spot, then ones that you move around in and then joystick.

I was dumb enough to play phasmophobia as second game and felt pretty ill like 20 minutes in, took until the day after to get better, ginger ale is good for it.

Suggest you start with beat saber or pistol whip, yes paid, but Demo of beat saber, and I love pistol whip, then if enough space go super hot or eleven table tennis. Paid though.

After that you can start jumping into games like Pavlov Shack, Ancient Dungeons and if you have doom on PC, super fun to play on the headset as vr.

Person who said Netflix was good, kind of disagree, the base app is crap, if you want to do it, get virtual desktop and stream Netflix via browser on PC, that's great, not running it native.

I also highly suggest you get some grips so you can let go with the controllers, can link one if remind me on Tuesday. Most important is swap to a proper head strap, two options there, something like the elite strap with battery is good (battery counterbalance helps a lot), or go with a halo strap.
