i dont watch sport, so this sounds perfect to me!

wow their most expensive is half the price of monochoice? well well, things are gonna get real messy soon!

Could not care about sport myself.

i can't imagine there is much sport content that SS have exclusive rights for.

live yes, see soccer tournaments(local soccer sabc cries about as they started showing/creating the userbase and now its sold off to mc, sam for some other ones) + rugby etc thankfully all cricket involving national team is shown live excl pro20.. and some of last pr20 wc due to rights

Top performers:
Movies (76%), Series (69%), Documentaries (67%)

sport comes in at a measly 46% - but wait! this forum is like 95% males - so if it was a truely 50/50 male female forum, it WOULD BE WAY LESS THAN 46% - think like 30% or perhaps lower!

Multichoice better catch a wake-up - I see a lot of people jumping ship, even without sport channels

Multi-Sat

um, I think you mean reposition the Dish.
Repositioning the satellite would require considerable knowledge of rocket science, aerodynamics and spatial orbital geometry. Not to mention a truck load of cash.

There is a bunch of stuff out there to allow you to hook in more than ONE dish / Satellite

Multiple LNB's -- LNB's with multiple feeds , motorized dishes , fancy STB's etc etc

Good niche for someone thinking ahead :)

I'm hope they manage to aquire CNN, I see no reason why they cant.

They already have.CNN is currently running as a test channel.Turner broadcasting got their own distribution transponder to Africa.DMC also got their own to Africa.Channels like Natgeo,Discovery,Zone reality,History and E is already setup,no extra infrastructure needed.

We tried MultiChoice's compact package but with no children's tv to speak of we switched back to the full overpriced bouquet.

If these guys can provide something along the lines of Disney or Ceebee's then we'll downgrade [or remove Mnet] and subscribe to ODM.

LOL!! We did exactly the same thing. I put the full package back on for Dec/Jan, gonna switch it off end of this month. We PVR'd 12hrs of Cbeebees as 1 program. This works well for 2 and 4 year olds, we also got tons of Barny's Curious Georges' etc. Will pob put it back on for a couple of months for Jun/Jul hols.

I agree, if ODM get the kids programs right - I will no longer want DSTV.

Btw. For those who don't konw, Fox Entertainment is already available on Nigeria's MyTV, which we can receive in SA. The channel mainly broadcasts old Fox produced series. Nothing special. We've seen everything in SA already.
But DO get excited about MGM. The channel broadcasts so many movies I have never even heard of before, it's amazing. With very few repeats.

um, they are hoping to buy content from DSTV and sell it cheaper than DSTV? What planet are these guys from? DSTV will put a massive mark-up on their content. Expect the final price to be 1.5 times what DSTV is now.

Satellite TV is a fail. Don't get me wrong, if they really can come in with decent content at a cheaper price then I will def. sign up. But somehow I cannot see this happening. You want good content AND cheaper prices IN South Africa?

What is wrong with this picture?

My prediction: They will go live in the third quarter of this year with mediocre content (no DSTV content) at around R400 subs monthly. They will be plagued with technical problems well into 2011.

Agreed.

That or the content will be prehistoric and crud.

I think it would be very naive to think of this as anything other than 'Recession-TV'.

That said if it rocks and it's cheaper ...I'm in.

I don't think this forum is very representative of all pay-tv subscribers. |For starters I know even if ODM has fox broadcasting right on the back of the US releases and HBO Comedy Central and more I still couldn't leave Multichoice because supersport is the best sports broadcaster in this hemisphere. Unless ODM can get say SkySport and can broadcast Currie Cup S15 and all international and local cricket. I dpont think alot of DSTV subscribers will budge.

However if they can offer that and HD and a PVR for the right price I think 99% of DSTV subscribers will move

I don't worry about the sport. However, "sporting content such as martial arts" sounds awesome.

I want Documentaries (All the Discovery niches [like the Science channel by Discovery], the Nova channels, Nasa channels, the Documentary channel, etc.)

I also want Sci-Fi channels (especially SyFy)

Movie channels and Series channels for different types, would be awesome.

I will say it again. I will stick with DSTV at least until ODM has a PVR decoder. It is not possible to fully enjoy your service otherwise. You will end up missing most of the good stuff without it.

What's the point of having live TV if you can't watch sport? Downloading a soccer game just isn't the same as watching it live!

only niche sports :(
i want my rugby, cricket, F1 etc...

give them a while. the current contracts is already given to no-choice, however i'm sure ODM will try everything they can to get the contracts for broadcasting coming sport events. well i hope so :)

Don't let it be a hinderence, get a proper PVR; get an HTPC.

MC can sell their old contend because they are still broadcasting it lol

Most probably ODM will feature channels that are already available to African countries as per http:/www.mytvafrica.tv/
We had a glimpse of these channels eg. FOX, TeleToons, KidsCo, E!, MGM, NatGeo Adventure and Zone Club a while ago when the MyTV signal was unscrambled in the public bouquet on DStv.
Being a subscriber on the Compact DStv, I wouldn't mind getting some new channels for the kids specifically.
