OECD: No Reason for Local Capping

Speaking at the recent ITWeb broadband conference, Reynolds – a world renowned telecommunications expert - said that he was surprised at the bitcaps (simply known as caps locally) in South Africa. “The highest bitcap I could find from Telkom is 4 GB. That is nothing,” Reynolds said.

I agree with Reynolds - on all his points.
 
Its so true, why cap local bw. Come telkom wake up and smell the coffee. I really hope the ICSCA nails them in the courts.

I have to disagree with the title "No Reason for Local Capping"

There is a very good reason: Greed.

(That also happens to be the ONLY valid reason for local capping)
 
The response will be something like "he is not south african and does not have the best intentions for south africa"

or how about a "the international market can not reflect african market"

or the best option, ignore him and continue doing what they are doing.
 
OK, so let me get this straight:

40GB of international bandwidth per month, combined with unlimited local bandwidth (That does not count towards the aforementioned 40GB), at the same price I'm currently paying for my 2GB cap - maybe a bit cheaper?
So you're telling me it'll actually be viable for me to upgrade to a 4mb line? (Currently on 384kb, and I am NOT going to upgrade it until the caps get SIGNIFICANTLY higher!)

Sounds too good to ever be true in this country of ours! :(
 
Hmm

Telkom have the usual response, it's all in place on their side and it's up to the ISP to resolve the issue. That's been their response in the past. Stretching this over a few days might make the people impatient.
 
Loads of people has said all this before and not much else have changed. If and when it changes i'll be happy.

The sad part about this article is not the facts that it presents(ok that as well) but the age! It's 2 years old, and still, the situation looks just about the same.

We have seen some "major" price reductions
We have a second national operator - Wow, can you believe the deals we're seeing from them!!
We can now buy a bundled ADSL solution from our ISP's...
Isn't this all just wonderful? Feels like we've come far have we not...


Sadly, the DoC have achieved NOTHING in the last 2 years. The ADSL regulations which were supposed to change the face of connectivity in South Africa have had absolutely no effect at all. Just look at the local capping for instance.

I speak to be corrected, but isn't Vodacom the cheapest broadband option if you go on a R/Mb/sec basis? (international cap)... They're a Cellphone company for goodness sake. How can they be cheaper than a fixed line company with ALL the access to an undersea cable?

How difficult can it be Telkom? Why invest in things like Telkom Media, etc, when you have connectivity problems to solve. How about rolling out some more ADSL ports for one. I live in a densely populated area where ADSL should be readily availble, yet, the truth of the matter is, there are no ports available and Telkom will only provide new ports come December 7th -> Yeah Right...

I have no hope at all for the dire state of telecoms in this country of ours!

If only our Telecoms "Giant" and our beloved Government would show the same commitment that our Springboks showed on Saturday, then maybe we might see some change.
