Yip, Cheetahs were the better team actually, but you need to take your chances.

Missed crucial kicks will cost you in a semi or final.

Lions brains trust need to think hard in who will be in the starting XV. For me Rohan needs to start with Mnisi.

Also the only thing they need to practice this week is pass and catch.

As a foreigner, am confused about the Currie cup.

How are these matches going on when players are away at the WC? In this case having international players is a disadvantage?

The names of the teams (some of them) are the same as for Super Rugby. Do the same players play in both?

The Super Rugby teams are franchises that can use players from Currie Cup teams. Some players are signed by the provincial team (eg Golden Lions) as well as the SR team (eg Lions). Note the different names...

Similarly with Bulls vs Blue Bulls, Stormers vs Western Province, etc...

You get some players who play for a SR franchise and then go play in Japan during the local Currie Cup, eg. Grant Hattingh (Bulls).
 
And the Currie Cup has always been like that.

In the past the Springboks would go on tour for 2/3 months every year, so the provincial teams would have to make do without their international stars...

Are there provincial quotas? Or is it open season on players? What I mean is do the Lions have to have a certain number of Gauteng players?

No, no such quota... the only quotas that they have is the number of players per colour - in the Currie Cup, not Super Rugby.

Just to add to what MickeyD said, each SR franchise have certain provincial teams to pick from. Like Pumas and Golden Lions falling under the Luons franchise. Hence Faf playing currie cup for Pumas, but SR for the Lions.

To add, as Mickey has given the layman lay down.

It has more to with the respective rugby unions. Yes, a rugby ‘Franchise’ can be privately or commercially owned, but to take the WPRU as an example they own the Stormers brand which participated in the Super Rugby competition as a regional team in sunny SA. Where we do have provincial teams (which includes areas covered by the respective rugby union), the ‘Franchise’ teams are considered as regional teams.

To continue with the WRPU, the Stormers has an agreed draw range, where they may draw players registered within the Boland at the Boland Rugby Union (Boland Cavaliers) and back in the day this included the SWD Eagles which has landed at an new regional home.

Due to the Super Rugby structure, the politics and the policies bind to the competition there are rules which stipulate a cooperation agreement. The body which operates this is SANZAR which will probably expand should the new regional participants positively contribute to the growth in a business sense.

When it comes down to the players draw the respective rugby union rules are applied, like it would with a Currie Cup or Vodacom Cup. As I used Stormers as an example they need to obtain the Boland Rugby Union’s permission to draw a player within their union which is a registration process instituted by SARU (their constitution). This permission may include a mutual contract which I see as an incentive. A Super Rugby Franchise cannot simply draw players in this sense. Then you get loan players which is an agreement between two (or more) entities which also has to abide to SARU’s constitution. This can extend to between the SA, NZ and AUS rugby unions.

No but he is the one who fled to Australia because of Andre Watson. Even got Ozzie citizenship (his wife is a Sheila, I believe) and identified himself as Australian during the latest sevens season.

When Watson got fired he was on the first flight back.

Great guy. Not my favourite referee though.

Fastest referee in the world I believe. Just watch him jog next to the sevens speedsters when they score.
