Bold move by Smith in his first game...

Cheetahs coach Franco Smith has named his team to tackle the Waratahs in a Super Rugby clash in Bloemfontein on Saturday (15:00 kick-off).

It will be Smith’s first game in charge following the departure of Naka Drotske.

Smith has made several changes to the team that lost 42-12 to the Stormers at Newlands last weekend.

In the backline, Niel Marais replaces Joe Pietersen at flyhalf. Marais was a star player for Shimlas in this year’s Varsity Cup, which they won under the coaching tutelage of Smith.

Sarel Pretorius is also back at scrumhalf, while Cornal Hendricks will start on the left wing, replacing Raymond Rhule who has a knee injury.

Rayno Benjamin also moves up from the bench, replacing Michael van der Spuy to start at inside centre this week, while Coenie van Wyk replaces Clayton Blommetjies at fullback.

Up front, BG Uys starts at loosehead prop, with Danie Mienie moving to the bench, while Tienie Burger and Boom Prinsloo swap places in the loose trio.

Niell Jordaan will also make his Super Rugby debut at No 8, replacing Henco Venter.

Among the substitutes, Elandre Hugget takes Stephan Coetzee’s place as reserve hooker, while Willie Britz replaces Carel Greeff, with Shaun Venter also coming in on the bench as scrumhalf reserve.

Teams:

Cheetahs:

15 Coenie van Wyk, 14 Sergeal Petersen, 13 Francois Venter, 12 Rayno Benjamin, 11 Cornal Hendricks, 10 Niel Marais, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Niell Jordaan, 7 Tienie Burger, 6 Boom Prinsloo, 5 Francois Uys (captain), 4 Carl Wegner, 3 Maks van Dyk, 2 Torsten van Jaarsveld, 1 BG Uys

Substitutes: 16 Elandre Huggett, 17 Danie Mienie, 18 Ewald van der Westhuizen, 19 Seven Sykes, 20 Willie Britz, 21 Henco Venter, 22 Shaun Venter, 23 Joe Pietersen

Waratahs:

He really has nothing to lose and I doubt there are any expectations for these last two SR games he will be in charge.

Good idea to test and expose Neil Marais to a higher level. Especially with Joe leaving.

Benjamin at centre is a surprise. I thought Vd Spuy did quite well at times.

Yeah, I agree. Vd Spuy did kind of disappear last weekend, though.

So did 14 of the other players :p

That was such a poor game by the Cheetahs. Seriously thought they would put up a better fight for Naka's last game.

Haha, fair enough.

It was sad. Had hoped they would have one last hurrah for him.

Oh well, onwards and upwards! Hope Smith can shake things up.

Very brave indeed. Will either pay dividends and the Cheetahs will be competitive in a 8-10 point loss or it's going to backfire horribly for them and the Tahs will put 40 past them. I'm leaning towards the latter. Either way Tahs should win comfortably....

Looking forward to the Stormers vs Lions match.
Then for good measure the Sharks beat the Stormers next week to spice things up :p

Sad news about former All Black Jerry Collins and his wife. Died in a car accident in France.

3 month old baby also seriously injured.

Was a good player that. Tough as nails.

Yeah, it's very sad. He had some tough times, as well. I remember that incident with a knife in Japan. :wtf:

RIP.

Well I'm a loyal Shark and they're just not there right now. We've replaced the coach so I don't think we can blame him, who, what and where now? Some mayor surgery needed at Kings Park and they need to hurry up.... or maybe the players thinking they'll be selected as boks is saving themselves. If any boks come out of the Sharks tank. Really hoping the Sharks perform well in the CC...

Don't know about that hey, The Stormers have dropped their guard against the Sharks before. But I don't see them doing it this time.

Interesting.

Heard from a rather reliable source that Heyneke Meyer will quit the Boks after this year and take up Director of Rugby at Bulls.

Victor Matfield will coach the forwards and Fourie du Preez the backs. Ludeke will/might stay on in a secondary role.

Nothing confirmed obviously but remember that you read it here first if it gets confirmed later.

Woah. That would be a shocker. Wonder why. Perhaps he's not crazy about the pressure and scrutiny.

On topic of the game - There's no way Milner-Skudder is not a future All Black with those skills.

Marshall just had a wonderful solo try, too.
