Official Google Nexus 7 Thread

Got my Nexus 7 last Friday..beautiful device and still learning the ins and outs about it but first impressions are great...

I reckon the new Samsung 8" maybe something worth waiting for. I'm beginning to think I prefer using my Note 1 to the Nexus 7

That's the route I'm going, waiting for the Samsung Note 8". It will be pricier but I think with the Nexus 7 I'll always be annoyed by the couple of things it can't do.

Won't touch another Samsung device until they start releasing the sources. That's why I am going Nexus...

Hello N7 owners.

I am in the market for a tablet. So this basically means the iPad the N7 or N10 (I have a family member coming down from the USA in a month who can procure one for me)

I would like to know if you guys really enjoy your device and what sort of use cases have made the device great for you? sorry if this question sounds a bit like a survey but I would like to know what kind of tablet I should be getting. Probably for content consumption, morning forum lurking, youtubing and redditing.

I dont feel like getting an iPad since I have a few paid-for apps on my gmail alreaddy so I guess im stuck on this platform. I have a Nexus 4 so perhaps a N7 or N10 would be a great little addition to my arsenal.

One of the biggest things i found missing recently on nexus 7: no hdmi out. No adapter for it, nada. So my samsung S3 phone can happily play stuff on my tv (with adapter) while my nexus, which got an awesome gpu chip, can't.

A secondary minor issue is not having a front camera. Not for photos, but for various apps (barcode scanning, star watching, distance/augmented reality apps) that use the camera.

Good points... Just amended your post as well as I think you meant rear, not front.

Play Store says that Whatsapp is not compatible with the N7, so I just downloaded it from here directly and it works like a treat.

What's all that about?

oh and this from the link you posted
Minimum requirements:

Android OS 2.1 or above
Unlimited internet data plan recommended
Tablet devices are not supported

Wait, you didn't have to do any hacking to get it working? How did you authenticate your account?

As I say, I downloaded the apk from the link above, it started installing and asked me if I wanted to install the latest update immediately. I said yes, it downloaded that and then it asked for my cell phone number as usual(I'm in Senegal working just now) then the 'waiting for sms authentication'or something, and within 20 seconds it was saying welcome. A minute later I was chatting to my wife on her iphone back in za.

I'm on 4.2.2 and am not rooted or anything either. Worked like a charm and even my sim card was a cut down normal size sim.

For those interested in such things, my bundle on Orange is 3gb or 7 days for about R150. The better one is about R350 for 5gb or 30 days, but I'm out of here next week so just took a weeks worth for now.

I have seen the Nexus 7 3G receive SMS messages before, which might be why it worked. Do all 3G Android tablets have the capability to receive SMS messages?

i used to have a huawei s7 slim tab that could make calls and send sms out the box...

This makes sense... Could be built into Android, I don't think that the messaging app will just be removed by default..

So seeing that the N7 is 'incompatible' on the Play Store but yet works ok by loading the apk directly, is it Google dictating the incompatible angle?
