OFFICIAL HTC Desire Thread

What is fellow desire users data consumption like?

Considering I have been attached to Wifi except for being in the car an hour, I have used 4.3mb. At R2/mb it's quite a bit :-/ hmmm

Time to get a bundle I think

Agree on the bundle idea...According to NetCounter I have used 152.43 MB of data this month already on Cell, and about 2GB on Wi-fi....Okay, the Wi-fi is not just internet. Lots of times I am too lazy to plug in my phone, so I just browse to my phone and copy stuff via Wi-Fi. That would have been about 80-90% of my Wi-fi usage. Also keep in mind, this is my first month with my new phone....I am showing off every chance I get..

Ive got 34mb of my 300mb data bundle left for June... Any one know if it is possible to use gconnect as an alternative ISP than vodacom? Probably just have to switch APN? Any1 know any software for this for an easy switch?

I've only had it since Friday, but what I did was I loaded a 300mb bundle from Vodacom, as soon as I got it, i've now used about 90mb's, but that is because of all the downloading of apps, and also seeing how the browser works and so on. Now that I know how all the stuff works, and I've stopped downloading and browsing around at every chance I get, my data usage has dropped dramatically.

Remember that you can customize this phone a whole lot, so you can pretty much choose how much data it is going to use, but to be safe, I'd say allow 10mb/day if you do no other browsing of downloading, and just let the phone get periodic updates etc. Obviously this will vary heavily depending on what updates you ask it for, and what accounts you choose to sync, so please don't take this as written in stone...I'm not paying any ones data bills, LOL.

Some things to try would be:

Turn off background downloads: This can help with battery a little, but also save some data. Bare in mind that market needs this enabled, but if you select market while it is off, it'll take you to a screen to re enable it.

Customize your account sync options: You can tell the various accounts how often to sync, or if you would rather sync them manually. Obviously, you'll use less data syncing manually, or by letting them sync every 6 hours instead of every 1 hour.

I was using 3G watchdog at first, and it does a great job of keeping track of your usage, but I found that it was sometimes preventing my phone from entering sleep mode, and so it was eating the battery up. Another app that did this was Task Killer(the one with the red man as the icon), and system manager free....I have now uninstalled them, because a lot of people on various forums say that task killers are not essential.

I have Juice Defender running, and also Powersave Mode. These seem to work very well. I also downloaded Sysmonitor, and this does a great job telling me about RAM, SD Card, Processor and Battery. Before removing those other apps, System Manager Free or what ever it is called, reported that at idle my CPU was almost always clocked above 90 % and sometimes up to 100%...This is obviously no good for the battery.

After removing the apps that I mentioned, and installing the new ones, I now have an idle CPU usage of about 12 -16% at most, and I'm happy! I don't really need 3G watchdog, as Vodacom4me gives me a fairly good idea of the data usage, and so if it is getting close to empty on there, I can always just load a small top up or something.

Hope someone will find this useful, cos the CPU usage debacle I had was really frustrating since this is my first android phone. I was on the verge of factory resetting, but then decided to try fix the problem myself, and it seems to have worked. I took my phone off charge at 6pm yesterday, and as of now, it still has about 78% battery left. This includes phonecalls, mails, sms etc. So my current battery usage is +/- 1.5% per hour. Theoretically that means my batter could last as long as 60 Hours on a charge at my current usage. It probably won't but even if it gets to 48 hours, I'll be happy!

The phone uses a lot of data. I would get a bundle and also monitor usage quite closely.

Does anyone know if it's possible to copy the ringtone and sms (notification) tones to the phone's internal storage so they still work when connected as USB storage?
Yes, if one does not already exist create a file on the sd card named media\audio\ringtones and copy your mp3 file into the ringtone folder or media\audio\notifications for sms .m4a files...

EDIT: Sorry didn't read the question properly. Use Astro file manager or any file manager for that matter and navigate to the phones internal memory systems folder\media\audio\ringtones or notifications...

EDIT: Sorry not sure how to copy the mp3 file from the storage card to the phones internal memory using astro file manager...

Ok just reached my bundled "cap" of 300mb for the month. According to my app - netbilling, I only used 290mb. So who do you think is wrong? VC or my app...

Maybe the usage before you installed the app? I am using NetCounter...will see how it compares with my bill when I get my bill....on 153mb at the moment....quite little considering I have been showing off quite a bit.

Has anyone checked out any of Gameloft's 3d games? They are REALLY REALLY good looking! Just a little on the large side....roughly between 50-100mb, but you can only buy directly from them, so doing it via the web is the better way anyways.

I have looked at Assassin's Creed, Hero of Sparta, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X and Dungeon Hunter, all beautifully designed...they are a little more on the expensive side considering they are phone games, but $5 is not too bad;-) Still want to check out NOVA...Looks pretty interesting.

Oh, here is a link to some screenshots:

I am quite impressed with this phone.

The two things I was worried about:
1) Battery Life - I heard it was awefull and arrived at work with a charger just incase. The phone made it through the day, and well into the night - no issues there. And it was quite a heavy day phone wise, new toy and all that. As long as it gets one full day including my evening outings I am happy.
2) Data usage. When I had my hero it was incredibly heavy on data. As I didn't have it for too long, I never played around. I set things like facebook etc to only update once a day, weather twice a day, and email is as items arrive (push) (limited to 5kb). According to my phone it's only used 6mb in two days which I think is very reasonable. +- 200mb a month. Not bad.

Everyone says Android isn't "on par" with iPhone. I think it's further ahead.

I deleted my contacts by mistake, but all my contacts are saved in my old gmail account (not the one sync'd to the desire). It's blocked at work, so I logged on via my phone, exported the contacts, and then emailed them to myself at work. So simple. I love the ability to download files, move them around etc. Something I never managed to do on previous phones.

You are a poor excuse of a geek if your phone is less than a week old and your battery lasted that long:-P Don't worry, in the first few days the battery life drastically improves, by day 6 or 7 it has just about normalized. If you could have made it more than a day in the beginning, I am sure 2-3 days would be a standard expectancy. I bought a car charger for mine, Body Glove. It works well, and has the whole usb setup going as well, so if I get stuck somewhere, I can always charge via pc anyways.

About the contacts, could you not just have added the google account and let the contacts sync? On my previous phone I used to put new versions of Android on at least monthly, and the moment your Google sign-in details are in, the contacts are there...well, took about 2 minutes, but it was really nice and fast. Everything on this phone revolves around google. I even have an app that as soon as I get an SMS, it saves a copy of the sms in my Gmail account, Labeled "SMS" of course. It is just so convenient...all incoming and outgoing messages backs up, and I don't even have to think about it:-)

I have my desire for more then a month now. Without adding any app killers or other special battery saving apps, I think 2-3 days battery life is impossible.

I run mine with wifi, gps, bluetooth, mobile data and auto sync off, some moderate usage and by the evening i have less then half the battery left.

Not saying its a problem, just pointing out its probably not going to happen.

Hey guys. Just received my HTC Desire a week ago. What an awesome phone! I have a few questions though:

  1. How do I sync the HTC Desire to my Outlook profile using Bluetooth? I don't want to use a cable each time. Both the Desire and my laptop have Bluetooth, so it should be pretty simple, but I just can't figure it out. I have always been able to sync my Nokia N95 over bluetooth, and expect the same (and more) with the Desire. Is it possible to do this?
  2. I live in Joburg - where can I find nice cases / covers / protectors etc for my HTC Desire? What do you guys recommend? Are there any decent places online that I can buy from?
  3. Is it possible to use a clear plastic screen protector, or will it interfere with the performance of the capacitive touch screen?
  4. I became very accustomed to using Nokia PC suite with my N95. Does HTC have something similar? The HTC Sync app seems really primitive.

I know my questions have probably been answered on this thread already, but there are 43 pages to read through, and I am too lazy to search.

Please help.

You have to remember the desire is a webcentric phone - android's equivalent of PC suite is iGoogle. There's a program you can install to sync your outlook with your gmail account, it will then sync to your phone. Pretty much everything else syncs the same way - through the internet, rather than through bluetooth or a cable.

Also thought HTC Sync not being able to use bluetooth was pretty lame. I'm using google calendar sync to sync outlook to google, which syncs to your phone.

Thanks dude. Can you please provide me with a name/link of the program you're talking about it?

How do I set this up? Is this the same program that alt146 was talking about? Does it sync Calendar and Contacts? I'm just thinking that sycing in this way is a bit convoluted, and prone to errors, inconsistancies, and conflicts between the 3 different applications (i.e. Google Calendar, Outlook, HTC Desire).

How well does it work for you?

I'm due for an upgrade on the 15th of this month and the phone I want is the Desire. I walked into a Vodashop this afternoon to inquire on what the pay-in is going to be on my contract (Talk 130) and the dude initially said about R1 600. I asked him then to double check and he then comes back and says "oops, sorry, it'll be R2 600" !

Eish, maybe it'll work out easier if I buy from from Expansys.

That is the same program I was thinking of, although I dont use it so I have no idea how well it works. The sync between gmail and the phone is great though, you edit something in one place, it appears in the other with minimum hassle. The only problem I have is that you cant change which calender received appointments are posted to (only when you create them yourself) and google calender doesnt have rule filters that allow you automatically assign certain people to certain calenders. At the end of the day it just means that my appointments aren't colour coded in my calender, which isnt the end of the world though.
