Official ICC 2015 CWC thread

Thankfully I'm not the only one who had something to say. Respect jounalists in the print&tv media have pointed it out so I'm in good company. ;)

Obviously your comment goes beyond just th eTsotsobe case, but I told you guys long back that there is some discernible bias and I think I've proven it each time. The beauty is there'll be plenty more opportunities for evidence. Write it off as an obsessed-conspiracy theorist, but I invite you one day to just chat to the common man in the street who understands even a little bit of rugby/cricket and I'm sure they'd say the same even thought they follow the game very little.

Anyway over to SA vs WI now........

An attack of Steyn, Morkel, Parnell, Abbott, Tahir (with JP chipping in), reduces our odds of winnings significantly. Philander has sort of been our one-man pace attack, now we have four who haven't looked remotely close to being equal to to what he could do singlehandedly. Even if one or two of them steps up, I think the other 2/3 will undo that work.

I hope they have a plan, but I don't think Amla, QdK, Faf, AB, Miller, JP will be able to put on the runs that this attack can defend; an djudgin from our batting form, nor will they be able to chase down what this attack will bleed
.

I tend to agree with regard to our attack in general - however, on the day, if Steyn and Morkel produce the goods then we're golden.

Batting wise, Amla and AB can take the score into the stratosphere - I have no doubt about that.

I love Zims fighting spirit to come out guns blazing and try to make a game of it.

Which is more than can be said of the Proteas.

The next match would be very very interesting for us.

I agree that off-filed activities will affect you, but he's been pretty damn good despite that. As good as or better than Philander, Steyn&Morkel. Imagine if they had some fun outside how poor they'd be in comparison to Tsotsobe who does the same. By being a world class bowler who's African and the only one who can walk into an Proteas side, I think Tsotsobe is victim of exaggerated scrutiny.

But anyway he's not there, and our attack have a huge challenge in their hands. I think a plane ticket for that shrink is in order.

I'm not au fait with the daily goings on in LT's life, but any sportsman who isn't able to demonstrate discipline and dedication in his personal life, no matter how talented, will be negatively prejudiced in a team setup - that's just a fact of life.

If you want to be the party animal, then you have to be light years ahead - ie you have to be so special that people overlook your personal life because you are their ticket to success - and while LT is good, he's not that good.

Fact of life - bad boys can be bad boys in individual sports - not so much team sport.

It pains me to say this. I know in ODIs and in the right conditions Morkel can tear apart any side, but when was the last time Steyn did that agains a decent batting lineup that's looking to smash him? AB's CWC batting record is not encouraging either. He has to bat higher. I wish someone would listen to me there. We have two stars - Steyn&AB - who are in serious danger of being "mortalised" by this CWC. I'll say it again WI&PAK are lurking, plus a washout against a UAE.

I follow ZIM a lot, and I think they are very poor. Sides have made them look better than they are.

I hope cricket doesn;t turn into soccer where a Costa Rica can now boss ENG/ITA/BRA/ARG.

ZIM should be thumping IRE&UAE; SA/PAK/IND/WI should be thumping ZIM.

The budgets&structures in these sides' countries means there is no reason they shoul dbe competing.

I suppose the only saving grace is that the small player pools means these guys have been playing a 100 odd ODIs together for years&years, so they have more experience than some of the new players in superior sides (e.g. Holder, QdK etc), and have faced the likes of Steyn&Riaz a number of times.

Having said all of this the ICC should increase the CWC. Imagine th eembarassment of an ENG?SA bowing out despite the increased number of teams design essentially to prevent that from happening, and now they want to reduce them even further.

This I agree with 100%. The ICC need a Sepp Blatter of cricket :p.

Tell that to SK Warne was and is still a bad going strong on 45. Getting under the skin of the Australian coach and management from the commentary box ;)

You say this like it's a good thing

Lonwabe let all this go to his head.
..

Is a giant ego supported by immense talent really such a bad thing? It is the type A personalities who usually prosper in sports.

I say we need more massive egos in the Proteas who walk onto the pitch knowing that they own it and everyone who stands against them.

No more Mr. Nice Guy.

Not at all in the context of sport - after all, that's what makes for superb sportsmen/women most of the time.

However, see my reply above re: the order :D

Edit: Also, saffers don't like big egos - look how much hate biff gets for example

First he proved himself
Then he became indispensable
Then he did whatever the hell he liked

That's the order of things :D

He was doing what the hell he wanted since aussie academy days :) Nearly got sent home from it , would have been if Ian Chappel hadn't intervened.

See my response in the divorce thread as to why I dislike Biff.

Do you think Shane Warne would've been this successful if he bowled during a time of high tech video analysis which today rips apart every spinner from all angles? Add to that the confusion to contian in T20s, which messes up the ability of most spinners to attack confidently in Tests? Just look at how well Clarke, Steve Smith, KP, Amla, AB etc all non-subcontinent batsmen, have dominated the best spinners of their time. If we remove that freak of nature Steve Smith who adheres to zero convention, bats like a praying mantis on steroids and has a stance that resembles a crackhead overdue his fix, you can tell how much assistance video analysis has been. I reckon a lot of the old batsmen would've got the better of Warne with that kind of assistance.

Good question.

Dunno

For those that say 'all you need is to bat to 6' and pick genuine bowlers, do a simple test and put the Proteas 'man for man' against say the Aussie team, even the WI team

Openers: I give a tick to Aussies
3/4: Faf and AB probably shade Watson (in particular though he can bowl) and Clarke. Smith at 4 probably evens out the score with AB on present form
5/6: Clarke/Smith and Maxwell ahead of Miller,Duminy
7,8...here is the issue...Aussies have Marsh/Faulkner as genuine bowlers who can bat plus Haddin who is a genuine batsman...this is the key...what have Proteas got here without making batting or bowling compromises? The Aussies are way ahead against any combination with Philander and now that he is out even worse.
9,10,11...Aussies have three quicks, Starc, Johnson plus Hazlewood/Cummins. The bonus is that they can all bat too. Only Tahir as a genuine spinner is ahead of the 'part timers ' Aussies have...but at expense of genuine quick. The pressure is on Steyn and Morkel to be on top of game in this scenario.

On paper definitely, the Proteas do not have a strong enough squad to choose from. They do not have that all rounder at 7 and going either genuine batsman/genuine bowler hurts one way or other. ....plus they do not have either anyway at present.

An open letter from Martin Crowe to AB de Villiers

Dear AB,

You might have picked up that pre-tournament my head predicted you boys to win this baby, while my heart, naturally, is dressed in black.

Don't be sad, AB. So far you've dropped a few backers, looked pretty ordinary at times, but I'm holding fast. And if I had a quiet moment with you, then this is what I would offer, for what it's worth.

Firstly, and most important of all, any success of the highest order is down to bold, courageous leadership. You guys should know; you had one of the best of all time - Nelson Mandela. So my first little tip is to acknowledge that bold leadership is your domain. This is your time to march them out, take them home. The skipper in black has already assumed that role and is mounting an assault, just as Edmund Hillary did. On your side, if I were you, AB, I'd reach out and feel the presence of Madiba.

Next, your key role is to find each person's button and press it firmly. Look them in the eye and implore that they reveal their individual expression to fit perfectly within the team endeavour. Press the button: it's green (with a yellow stripe).

Let me start with the critical aspect of leadership - tactics. Your bowling attack needs tweaking, so open your mind to a few ideas and see if AD agrees.

One of the roles you have to get right is the fourth seamer. Wayne Parnell is your man. Trouble is, he is a rogue and can go walkabout, but he's likeable and eager, and if his button is correctly pushed, he will be a massive positive for the rocky road ahead. So open with him, giving him a chance to swing the ball, to feel important. Remove his fear, free him to be the best he can be. Rest Vernon for ten days, freshen him up for the last four games of the Cup. But empower Wayne to be the man he can be, steer him down the path of fulfilment. He can bat at eight with purpose. His button is your main priority.

Get Dale to relax, get rid of the stunned mullet look, get him looser. His wrist-snap is missing, the venom of old lacking. His body looks tight, with the will spilling over, over-stretched, so give him a list of different roles for a few games: open one day, bowl from middle to death on another. Get him challenged on different fronts to keep him fresh, not thinking too much, just lots of doing and being the class act he is.

Same with Morne. Change when and where he bowls from one game to another. These guys are experienced, they need to enjoy the game for a period, get the right juices flowing. Let them have turns opening with Wayne, trying a combo or two to scene-set by attacking with vigour.

Oh, I love Imran. What a big heart. If only you had 11 of him. He has been through so much and still keeps fighting on. He's your go-to guy, your banker, so be grateful he is in fluent form.

JP has to drop this flat rubbish he's bowling. Get him back to flighting the ball sweetly, dipping to create bounce, as he can. Tell him to take wickets, to attack, to be flamboyant. Inspire him.

Hey, and when it feels right, bowl an over yourself. Get that smile back on your face. Roll the dice: six balls, one wicket. No one will dare to get out to your slow straight dobblies. Nothing to lose for an over, and if you play Rilee at seven for a game as you rest Vernon, then you become the sixth bowler.

You have the attack, now you need to manipulate it better.

Hashim is your right-hand man, a beautifully strong, resilient player, so don't be afraid to ask him to carry more of the load. Tell him to take his time, anchor and secure the innings. He must bat through in his well-grooved tempo, not in this frenetic mood he seems to be in at present.

Tell young Quinton to clear the mind a little, not premeditate so much, as it roots the feet to the spot. Tell him to breathe deep and let the feet find fluency, then the hitting and timing will return. He's a critical cog in the wheel. Breathe and believe.

I'm worried about Faf, your long-time sparring partner. He's got the weight of the world on his shoulders, plus a small chip that needs removing. You are the one that needs to pull it out, as I sense it's there because you have left him so far behind over this decade. Encourage him to drop the burden he appears to be carrying, let him know that he can have some of your runs this tournament. That you can bat side by side, brothers in arms. You need him to be free.

Have a shave, AB, you look ragged and rattled. Smarten up. A touch of polish is required. Since that 31-ball ton, you have got a bit sloppy. You need to be all things in all situations. You need to lead like never before. Take a leap of faith. Feel Mandela in your bones.

It's you and you only who can push the buttons of your comrades. Black buttons are being pushed over the ditch, and you need to match it.

Four matches left in the round robin, so try a few subtle changes and freshen up the senior men and empower some key young talents. Chill, mate. Whistle a tune as you start pressing buttons.

It's all good. Plenty of time to pick up the pace. But I wouldn't waste another moment, eh.

Respect,
A big fan

Interesting read. I particularly like his ideas regarding Wayne Parnell. Why not give him the new ball? A left armer bowling some gas with a swinging new nut? What's not to like...

Hey Agent_Smith, was just about to post that. What an awesome read. So many interesting points to ponder.

I read Martin's original note where he picked the Saffers. Like he says, his heart is dressed in black, but his head says it's the Proteas. I have a lot of respect for Martin Crowe for the manner in which he reaches across borders.
