Yea, you have to pay something like $4.99 which isn't much but then again its an internet purchase which I am not to keen for.

I'm pretty sure you are mistaken here. Cydia is free and the iPod Touch update isn't..

In which case you can just download the firmware for free from here

Just make sure you get the right firmware for your model (1G,2G etc) .. And then blackra1n (3.1 +) or use redsnow (3.0 and before) the iPod to get Cydia.

Oh and for blackra1n, this is from the creators twitter page:

with regards to new ipod touch 2/3 8g support, if your model starts with MB it'll work, if your model starts with MC it won't, and restore required

Its proberly because I haven't updated it since Jan '09 (bandwidth issues), I should try to update...
