The problem with the Rooney-RVP debate is that the prime formation in modern football (the 4-2-3-1, which United has been using with regularity) cannot accomodate two out-and-out forwards. The days of the 4-4-2 at the highest level are numbered (I hope you are paying attention, Mr. Hodgson).

Hello guys, good luck in your game tonight. I am a bit torn in hoping that you do wrap it up with a solid win over Villa, but a part of me wants Villa to win so that QPR can officially be relegated...

United hardly ever line up in 4-2-3-1. It's much more often a 4-1-4-1, with Carrick sitting in front of the back four alone.

A united win might augur well for us gooner's champs league spot chase as they will hopefully still be bloated and celebrating next weekend.

Nah, Fergie wants as many points as possible, and RvP probably wants to keep trying for the Golden Boot/PFA.

They've made use of the formation on a number of occassions.

United’s style of play has changed this season with Ferguson showing more flexibility in the way he sets the team up. The core 4-2-3-1 formation is the default setup but its much more fluid this campaign than last. Take for example the use of the diamond formation against Newcastle United earlier this year – it shows Fergie, despite his age, is not afraid to experiment and change his system. At the time, Fergie said that

"It is revolutionary because we're going against our history."

The other main formation Fergie has used is the 4-4-1-1, the ‘traditional’ formation that was used last campaign.

While a lengthy read, this article - http://www.unitedrant.co.uk/opinion/the-debate-uniteds-season/ - also makes mention of the extensive use of a flexible 4-2-3-1 and a 4-4-1-1.

Either way, United more often than not have operated with a single out and out forward.

We may start in that formation, but we hardly ever play it, and when we do, we don't keep it. There's never another player alongside Carrick in front of the back 4, so it isn't a 4-2-3-1, but rather a 4-1-4-1, with Rooney in advanced midfield with the two wingers and one of Kagawa/Cleverly, or the abovementioned 4-4-1-1, with Rooney just behind RvP, or RvP just behind Hernandez.

By the way, the United Rant podcast is quite good, listen to it if you have a chance.
