Fergie hasnt done Moyes any favours in terms of the state of the squad. I feel Moyes should be given the funds to overhaul the squad come end of season 100M+ for the 6-7 players united need and time to make them gel.

City strengthened quite a bit, Chelsea's previous signings are flourishing in their non-debut seasons, LFC's young players are getting stronger. Spurs made a 100m investment which is coming together. Everton made some very, very clever loan deals and Martinez is utilising that squad well.

Manager is the main thing, which shows the squad is ok if you've got the right man. League table can lie with regards to squad quality. I was reading about Barcelona under Rijkaard where by the end of the season they ended up with 60 odd points, talk of the time was about the quality of the squad. Pep took over the next season and with the same core of players, well you know the rest. Im not trying to make comparisons between this United side and that Barcelona side, im just trying to say that the manager can make a huge difference in the perceived quality of a squad.

Guardiola sold aging players and built the squad around talents such as Xavi, Iniesta and Messi. They also already had a good squad in place.

Right if its exactly the same as last season but we have gone from comfortable winners to 7th place, clearly squad quality isnt our main issue.

Spurs, City, Chelsea and Arsenal spent more than £300mil on improving their squads in the summer window alone. United bought a solitary player who has not settled. The differences in squad quality of your rivals compared to last season are enormous.

I don't really agree with this, either. The Barca side under Rijkaard were built around Deco, Ronaldinho and Eto'o. Guardiola sold two of them immediately after taking over, relegated Yaya Toure to the bench, and built the team around the emergent Lionel Messi. The core of that team changed.

But I do agree that a good manager makes a massive difference, and United are suffering most from that difference.

Fellaini played long enough in England before moving to United for us to know he was average at best.

Yeah, he's been disappointing, but he proved he can be a beast at times. We'll see how he does when he comes back.

So... Name names. I can think of Strootman and Herrera, neither of whom are familiar to the EPL (not that that should automatically rule them out)

Did Thiago say that? Besides even if thats true, i find it laughable that you think Fellaini was the only player United could have signed.

Of course, im not denying the squad doesnt have weakness. Im just saying this years weaknesses are more or less the same as last years weaknesses when we won the league. Clearly this squad is better than 7th and should be in the top 4.

United added 1 player and he hasn't done a thing. It is the same old, same old. And it literally is old.

Arsenal added a superstar string-puller and Wenger has got them clicking nicely. They've kicked it up a gear and they are being spurred on by a batch of talented young players.

Manchester City is the most talented team in the league. Their bench warmers are better than most of United's starting XI.

Chelsea is loaded with individual talent itself and added a few more. They may not be at City's talent level but there is class in most positions, especially in the midfield to a point where one of their best players from 2012/13 - Juan Mata - has been confined to keeping the bench warm.

Spurs forked out millions on 7 new players that all start. Aside from that they had their own talented core. Their drawback was a manager that couldn't get the new boys to fit in.

Liverpool have added a few new faces. No one spectacular, but they are featuring and getting the job done. But the existing midfield and strike force is vastly superior to what United have.

Everton has seen Martinez take Moyes' solid defensive foundation and cap it off with a new attacking edge. Not to mention he has introduced two stars on loan in Lukaku and Deulefeu and another accomplished rock in Gareth Barry.

In a nutshell; The weaknesses are the same as last year, but slightly worse and nothing new has come in to change it. Everyone around them added to their squads and got better. This team as is and considering the teams around it is no better than 5th place material.

Ok so we would be 5th under Ferguson? Cant remember when Ferguson was last out of the top 3, sure you can say Ferguson was a brilliant manager and got a lot out of the players but then they have the potential and the ability to do better than what they are currently doing. Additions are required but tactics especially negative tactics and morale are more pressing issues atm.

Im not sure why you want me to name names, unless your point is that Fellaini was our only option? That's true. One thing we don't have to speculate about, is that he didn't join us, but joined Bayern about two weeks after Moyes took the United job. End of.

Because we have Carrick, who is a staple in the centre of the park. Am I 100% opposed to bringing in a replacement, considering his age and inevitable decline? No. But I was assuming those parameters.

Everton and Martinez were always going to take a hard line regarding transfer to Moyes unfortunately. Fellaini was one of their big fish, we were always going to pay a premium.
