Do you guys this new potential deal that Rooney has signed puts too much faith in him as a player for United in the long term? A quote i saw on a website not too far from here - "The idea of committing to paying Rooney £300,000 a week when he's 33 is little short of ludicrous"

300k a week is huge, if the reports are true. I am inclined to believe them, given that Rooney is already on 250k a week. On balance, it is hard to justify- Rooney has been patchy at best for a number of seasons now, and continually attempts to haul the club over the barrel with his demands.

Giving the inflation, I think it will be on par. HE is the life of this team. Find another player with his skill coupled with that much drive and work ethic - its as easy as Rooney growing hair without implants

I get the part about inflation and all. However, given his track record of him putting the club at ransom, doesn't this new deal further prove that he gets what he wants and always will at the club. It almost comes across as if he is bigger than the club - and maybe that's why he and Sir Alex didn't always see eye to eye?

From what I read - he was holding out for better players before signing rather then money being the big motivator (obviously a new contract will come with an increase). He wants to be at the club and wants the club to succeed like a fan would but he aint gonna stick around and let his career die playing with average Joes we have. He was stalling to sign, but now that we have Mata, he is obviously seeing our intent to better the squad.

He and SAF didnt see eye to eye coz he was played in MF - rather then SAF addressing the MF problem. But in all of that, the value of Rooney to the club is shown by even SAF not getting rid of him like so many others

Look, the money all these footballers earn is ludicrous, but Rooney is a quality player. They shouldn't have to lean on him to the degree that they have (at times it has been Rooney vs Their Team), but he is class.

Another thing with Rooney, I think he is good enough to evolve his game as age starts placing limitations on what he can do (no longer able to pull off a lung-busting run from the striker's position to win the ball in defence), so he could evolve into a CM or even a deep-lying playmaker.

Salary cap should be in place.

300 000 quid per week is astonishing.

Its just a football FFS.

That is a good point. van Nistelrooy and o a lesser degree Becks were all sold in their primes when their respective egos got too big. Rooney has been the only one who has stuck around after chucking his weight around.

Mata on the books and Rooney signing will only make it that much easier for Moyes to attract fellow world class players, even after the season they've had.

Rooney will definitely drop into midfield as he ages. He's got the range and vision required. Let's just hope he accepts that.

I still think we'll struggle to attract top class players in the summer, even with Rooney and Mata on board.

It may still be tricky, but better than saying ''Hey, Vidal, wanna come play with Tom Cleverley?''.

I'm more worried about the guy in charge.

If any top players have watched how useless we've been under Moyes this season, are they really going to want to join us and play under him?

Moyes signs Mata and immediately play him out of position. Leaves Kagawa on the bench etc.

You could put Moyes in change of Bayern or Real and he'd probably make them a mediocre team.

Moyes made Everton a mediocre team. Look how well they play without him at the helm.....

So Rooney goes from a rumoured pay cut to a rumoured £300K a week? Nice work. If you can get it.

Everton under Martinez ,play a better brand of footy.

Swansea and Southampton play or have played an attractive brand of football. Are we talking style of football of League finishes?

So how bad where they before he came

With 9 games to go they were 16th when he took charge, level on points with 18th and only clear of the drop thanks to goal difference. In the 10 games before his arrival they had won 1 game, drawn 4 and lost 5, scoring 7 goals. Under him they won 4 of their last 9 games, scoring 18 goals, including 11 in his first 4 games in charge. In his first full season in charge they finished 7th.

Prior to that Everton had finished 16th (00/01), 13th (99/00) and 14th (98/99) under Walter Smith.

It must also be noted that Everton's financial situation was far worse when he took over than it is now.

He also has a history of developing players into quality Premiership and international players (Osman, Jagielka, Baines, Everton version of Fellaini) and a reputation for helping players find stability and progress (Howard & Pienaar - Spurs' Pienaar was rubbish). The man is not a bad manager at all. He just needs more than five-and-half-months before the knives come out.
