Official Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) Thread

Before rooting I got 1.5 days out of my battery. After Rooting I get 0.75. Why would rooting cause such a dramatic battery drain?

Rooting should not have any affect on your battery dude. You just gained admin access.

Have you flashed a new kernel, modem or ROM?

I'll run it for a few days at these settings and see if the heating problems go away.

I'm running CheckROM V5 with AbyssNote v3.7 kernel, FYI.

I had to increase each of the volts above by 25mv due to the voltages being too low and my phone crashing as a result, but now it seems to be stable and, more importantly, much cooler. The heat has dropped significantly while playing GTA3, so I'm happy.

Now to monitor if battery usage has improved.
 
Hey guys, just picked up a new note bought though retail channels - and it has SuperSuperUser installed - this can't be right, can it!?

No, that sounds pretty dodgey. Do you have root access? Send us a screenie of your phone status screen?
 
Yup - Titanium Backup runs wirh root. Back to the shop it goes - who knows why it was returned!

I'll give full feedback pending the store's remedial action - for now, I can tell you it was bought online and collected from their offices in Jhb. I think it is only fair to allow them an opportunity to fix the issue first.

Nope - I wouldn't touch those guys with a 10 foot pole!

ShopAndship, with the handset being supplied by Vodacom (surprise, surprise ;) ) S&S has been great to sort this out very quickly, and one cannot really blame them for the first used unit.
Anyway, I have a new, sealed, blue unit in my hand, with a free Samsung original flip cover for my trouble. And no SuperUser installation - yet... :D

It is immediately obvious that the new blue unit has a much tighter battery fit, and the tabs on the back cover seem to be slightly wider. Exactly the same software version as the first unit though.

I bought mine from the Samsung shop at Vodaworld. No cover or any extras. Just the phone.
The cover was however given away with the CellC specials that were run. Only time I have known of a cover thrown in.

Samsung Galaxy Note ICS ROM leaks, we take it for a spin

At this point we shouldn’t be more than a month and a half away from the Samsung Galaxy Note official Android 4.0 ICS update, but how about getting a little preview of what’s to come? The first ICS 4.0.3 ROM for the phoneblet just leaked and we even managed to install in on a Note we had lying around and test it.



As you will see in a bit, the ROM is really stable and snappy and seems good enough for everyday use. All the hardware is supported, including the S Pen.
However, since it’s a Chinese release it comes without support for a Google account, which means no Android Market, so maybe it would be best if you wait for the official release or at least another leak.

Of course, one of the greatest bits about Android is that you can easily sideload apps, but you don’t want to be doing that all the time.

Even though TouchWiz masks most of the visual changes that Android 4.0 brings, there’s plenty of new functionality here. The new web browser is a huge improvement in terms of both speed and functionality over the Gingerbread one, while the new recent task screen is both easy to use and nice to look at.

The notification area has also seen some modifications, including the helpful feature to remove notification by side-swipes. It also seems Samsung will have a couple of nice surprises for us. While digging into the setting mode we noticed two new options – the first of those enables the displaying of the battery percentage over its icon, while the other improves one-hand usability of the Note by making keyboards use just a part of its screen.

Sadly, the one-hand thingy only works in the calculator for now, while the battery percentage is not functional at all. The S Pen gestures are all here though, even though it’s a bit sad that the cool stylus got no new functionality.

If you want to give the ICS ROM a try, you should check out this topic over at the XDA-developers forum. The files required for the flashing are all there for the taking and you might find some helpful tips too.
