Official Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) Thread

Didn't know about that :D but great news! Lets hope that then that is a sign for the rest, your white SGS2 is not an I9100G I hope?
 
Doubt they sell i9100G here in SA.
1st thing i checked with my white GS2 was the name (i9100) and with Quadrant checked CPU, and it was Exynos.

8. Don't rely on local retailers for your goodies. You will have much more joy on eBay. And cheaper.

9. Grab the desktop dock. It's awesome.

10. Grab the windscreen dock. It's awesome.

11. Don't get the flip pouch. It sux and you can't use the goodies in 10 and 11 above. Rather get the official pouch. It's really nice.

12. Don't bother with screen protectors. They ruin the look of your phone and you don't need them. Your screen is gorilla glad for a reason. Only paranoia makes you want a screen protector.

Please don't flame me if you disagree with above. It is just what I find works best for me.

I am happy to put up a step by step on flashing and setting up the apps mentioned above if you guys want. Just let me know.

This is my first time reading this thread on the Note, and it scares me how alike I am with the above poster.

I too got my Note at launch, and I've tried many ROMs since. Currently I'm on CheckROM (even though it is not based on the latest firmware like some others) with SpeedMod kernel. I don't use screen protectors (hate them), but I DO have the official pouch. I've found it is great in that I feel a lot safer with my phone tucked away in there, but it does make things a bit more awkward when trying to answer the phone, especially with one hand. And one-handed use is already awkward with the Note anyway.

It is my understanding that the Note does *not* have Gorilla Glass, but it *is* fortified glass, probably made in the same factory with the same materials. In any event, my screen has remained scratch free thus far (knock on wood).

I use LauncherPro, purely because its what I have used since my days with the HTC Hero, and the Galaxy S before it. I really like the new TouchWiz, but the inability to resize my widgets on the homescreen is a big issue for me. The Note has a 5 column layout, and 90% of widgets available on the market are designed for 4 columns.

With my current setup, I get a full day of use from my battery, even with fairly heavy use. I don't believe in disabling features to save battery; I want the full experience. As long as my phone lasts until bed-time, I'm happy. It's purely routine for me to charge every night; I've been doing that for years now.

Bottom line: I absolutely love my Galaxy Note. Coming from the Galaxy S (which I still believe was the best phone of its era), the Note feels like a bigger, faster version of that phone. Often, I get squif looks because of the size of this thing, and that's fine. I accept that its not for everyone. But anyone that has used a Note for more than 5 minutes will quickly realise that its size is an ADVANTAGE. Absoutely everything is better on the Note, from texting to browsing the net, to watching videos. The gorgeous screen cannot be beat. When I fiddle around on friends SGSII's these days, it just feels underwhelming. Quite honestly, I'm not sure I could ever go back to a smaller device. I really feel spoiled by this device, even playing on an iPad 2 (or any other tablet I've ever ysed) with its far lower PPI makes you realize how crisp and superior the display on the Note is.

Anyway, that's my two cents. Hope its of some use to prospective buyers and existing owners alike.
 
I feel the same way. I gave my mum my Galaxy S and I had quite forgotten how awful it was typing a message on that device until trying to help her with it recently. I would have a very difficult time going back to a smaller screen after this (although with ICS Samsung should be able to shave a few millimetres of the device by removing the physical buttons on the next Note, assuming there is one).
 
They may soon, in Many asian countries they selling I9100G's in boxes that say. I9100, feel sorry for those people, except in battery life, they scored there :confused:

The Note does have gorilla glass dude. The Nexus has fortified.

Ok I rooted my phone, but never really got any further than that.. I have some noob questions :o

I have been told to make a nand backup, what app should I use for that? I have searched the market for nandroid, but I get a million apps but that.

2 - CheckROM -> I am keen to install checkROM, is this the one to use: http://checkrom.com/threads/xxla4-2-3-6-checkrom-revo-notehd™-v5.387/
Also what is the difference between this rom and stock? I know there is a list of features in that link but they mean boggeroll to me :p

3 - Speedmod kernel -> Will flashing a different kernel not cause issues with my warranty?

4 - LA4 modem - WTF is a LA4 modem and why should I flash it ?

1. Switch your phone off, then press the Up Volume, Home and Power. Keep holding until you are in the CWM menu. Go to Backup/Restore and do a backup.
2. Faster, leaner, better battery life, customise which stock apps you want via the kitchen, etc..
3. They will never know. Go back to stock if you need to return it. If a hardware failure then it won't matter anyway :)
4. New releases of modems consume less battery life, pick up signals easier, etc.. Just read the thread releated and you will be able to decide for yourself if you want to flash based on user comments.

where would I find the latest LA4 modem rom?

been using stock LA4(rooted,cwm etc.)for a week or two and the battery life is amazing +-60% left at the end of the day !bt on whole day ,wifi now and again,+- 15 calls, 20 whatsapps, full screen brightness,background data off when not needed :)
 
Ok I have searched and searched. Where do I find the LA4 rom? Is it a rom?

I see he is about to upload - XXLA4][2.3.6] CheckROM Revo NoteHD™ V5 - should I wait for that or will it be considered a dev release?

On v4 at the mo.
Go ahead and flash, the update when v5 comes.
They guys always release stable ROMs. Best and GS2 and now on the GN. Cannot go wrong :)
 
One last question before I flash, will I still have access to all the apps I bought?

100% You apps are linked to your Google account, not your phone or ROM.

Best is to get Titanium Backup (need root which you have), then backup all user apps. Then flash new ROM and restore all user apps. Sorted :) Much quicker than having to redownload and configure settings etc...

Thanks I have backed up using the free version of Titanium, I will flash it when I get back after lunch.

To restore you will need the paid version otherwise you get a prompt for each and every app before restore. If you don't have many apps - yet - then that is fine. Later you will want it to just run through and restore everything.
Will upload some screenies in a mo. Nothing special though :)
