Battery life is definitely worse (<8h with minimal usage). Tried most recommended things (location rubbish off, Google Now disabled, powered down). Am now waiting for a full discharge. Not keen on the factory reset because of the bricking reports with earlier ROMs.

Just a quick update, it took nearly five hours to drop from 8% to a point where it decided to shutdown, so the battery calibration was definitely out.

I then recharged overnight, and it's a whole lot better now. Still not as good as 4.0.4, but usable. I'll do another complete discharge and see if it improves further.

I really like the bar in the notification dropdown where all the major system settings can be accessed directly. My Nexus 7 doesn't have that, so I assume it's Samsung specific.

With which cellular network are you? My Note still says it's current ICS firmware (version: PDA:LRI/PHONE:LRB/CSC:LR3(XFM)) is the latest!

friend of mine has the Note and said he isnt going custom ROM coz the S-Pen functionality is not supported properly compared to the official ROM's.

Can anyone confirm this? Wondering what custom ROM to point him to, Im only really up to speed on the S2 ROM's

Battery life still not good. Looks like I'm going to have to do a factory reset, which means rooting to do a proper backup...

I really do like some of the touchwiz features in this 4.1.2!

I've gone from GB to ICS to JB in about a day. I didn't really spend enough time with GB or ICS to gauge battery life or speed etc. Coming from a Nexus device I knew I had to have JB asap.

What I haven't done between upgrades is reset factory defaults. According to most on XDA, it is the only way to get rid of niggles. I was experiencing hectic battery drain until my phone completely died (unplanned). Since going through a proper charge cycle, I'm getting 17 hours battery life.

So I think if you having battery issues, discharge completely and recharge to see if it helps.

I've found a few things that have been draining the battery on my Note (with official 4.1.2):
The nexus wallpaper (I really like it, but I noticed it drains power fast) - it turns out this is why I experienced the extreme battery drain when I first updated, switching to any other animated wallpaper and battery life normalises for me.
The Samsung apps - if you're not using them disable (from the applications option in settings): Videohub, Learning Hub, etc.
Voice Talk - disable the options that allow it to always listen for commands (or just disable the app if you don't need it).
I think the biggest new power draw is Google Now (which forces Google Maps to always run two processes) - personally I like Google Now so much I can't bring myself to disable it, so that one's up to you.
The new motion control features - once you've tried them out and know whether they work for you (I've found smart stay never works for me and I don't actually use the multiwindow feature [though it's nice to have]) - if they don't use them then keep them off.
I'm now back to a full day's worth of battery life with a full charge.

I don't think there's any real difference, it's just that the German ROMs get upgrades quicker and more frequently.

Ok... I'm amazed with Chainfire from XDA... WoW!

Firstly, I had a Note 1, but gave it to my dad in December when I got my Nexus 4. I rooted my Note basically the day I got it (do with all my phones - hell I rooted my Nexus 4 before even making a call on the thing!) So its been a while since I last rooted and ROM'd a Note.

Last night I decided to whip the wifes old Note (She got a Note 2 in Feb) out and bring it to work today to fool around with... So I decide lemme root it and pop the Ultimate JB Rom. Just stunned how easy it was... Coming from Stock ICS 4.04 this is what I did:

- Download & Install ExynosAbuse.apk (Chainfire)
- Root with exynosAbuse (one click)
- Download Mobile Odin Pro (Chainfire)
- Download Ultimate JB ROM
- Flash ROM with Mobile Odin

How flippin easy ! Hats off to Chainfire!

Probably all under the skin, tweaks / system stuff. I reckon the main thing is running a good kernel which will improve speed / battery etc... ROM's are cosmetic....

Thanks for that information! It's so difficult to get information from Samsung SA. Even with the highly anticipated ICS update, when the rollout began the Note owners knew before Samsung's customer services guy did. I'm guessing this will be no different, and I'm wondering if we'll see it in SA before September (which will be 2 months before I upgrade)!
I'm not sure why it always takes so long here, because if the (weak?) excuse Samsung usually provide of ensuring a smooth experience were true, they should rather consult with the XDA folks.
I'm contemplating a factory reset anyway as my battery life currently doesn't manage more than 12 - 18 hours if I leave the wifi on, so I'm considering doing an XDA JB update as I've rooted the device anyway.

Yip, drop all your needed ROM's on your SD card... Personally I Download the roms with my PC and transfer them to my SD card.

I do need to mention that for some reason after the Phone restarted from Flashing the ROM, I had an error in the setup somewhere. I have no idea if it is repeatable or not so. Step for Step my experience:

As per my original post from flashing with Mobile Odin -

1- Phone reboots, start setup (select country/language)
2- click next, wizard crashed. Tried a few times... could not get further.
3- Rebooted into Recovery - CWM (Hold Vol up + Home + Power)
4- Wipe cache Partition
5- advanced, wipe dalvik cache
6- back, install zip from sdcard, explore to ROM location
7- Install ROM
8- Reboot, run setup ... all works.

So if any of you get the same issue... follow my steps above...

FYI, the ExynosAbuse.apk works nicely on the Note 2! Did a quick root on the wifes Note 2, loaded AddAware (which seems to be removed from the market?) to get rid of Adds....
