Official Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) Thread

Oh yes, I did try Webkey to control the phone from the PC, but I was not in love with the interface. Also painfully slow.

All else being equal, I would prefer teamviewer, as it is one app to control your other devices (pc's) as well..

I just found little need for any of those, the only thing I really wanted them for was for things like whatsapp when I at my desk at work. FOr that I have remotekeyboard, a small app u run on ur pc that wifi connects to your phone. You type in its box and its appears on ur phone, nice and easy.
 
Well I've tried the official German 4.1.2 ROM - the extra features are great (really brilliant), but battery life has taken an incredible knock so if you're thinking about loading the official ROM, it I would caution against it.

Not in my experience, when I checked this Am i was at 2.2%/hour, I admit it went up but it was 0.5%/hour and there could be dozens of everyday reasons for that.

I found a new massive cause of battery drain is GMaps. Spotted it about 3 weeks ago when my phone started waking me up around 4am with a flattery. Idle usage was 7.6%, GMaps was keeping the phone from deep idle, it had triggered a wake lock just shy of 7k times in 4 hours. Froze GMaps and it went from 7.6% while sleeping to 1.3% while sleeping, my usage now peaks out at 4.4% and that when I am busy with my daily walk and I have music and GPS on for a 70 minutes.

Simply replaced GMaps with Waze. As for the latest update, its not cause drastic battery drain on my side.
 
So myself has been trolling on the net, and I come across an announcement from Samsung, saying they launch a new 5.9" phone in the 2nd half of the year... Speculation around that it's the Note 3, but then in the same article, the blogger mention him hearing Samsung will launch the Note 3 with a stupidly awesome 6.3" TV screen... Nobody knows as yet, but the blogger says it could go either way... Looks like I'm gonna need to find pants with bigger pockets....
 
I've just acquired this awesome device. I've run the latest update via Kies, and it has upgraded from GingerBread to ICS 4.0.4. I was under the impression that JB for the N7000 was already rolling out?

Anyway of me upgrading to JB via Kies ? Not very keen on trying out the custom roms just yet, I just would like to get up and running ASAP. Will eventually root and customise, but for now I just want to experience the stock rom.

It is out, for those not using the USELESS ZA networks.
Only way to upgrade would be to use an official rom from another country(I use Germany). The local guys usually take about 4-6 months before releasing updates.
They still busy testing the Nexus 7 which has been on sale here for 7 month through retail outlets, but the Network guys are still testing to make sure it works while while those buying them cash already know the answer to that.

How does one load another country network's ROM exactly.
Can u point me to a download link with step by step instructions please.

For people who have Unrooted phone and ICS 4.0.4:

I can show an easy way to flash it.

Just download GL_NOTECORE_HYDRACORE_v4-3b_STD.tar
Flash it with Odin 1.85, (Click PDA, choose hydracore and press Start)
After this you will have Root on your phone. Restart it and check if Hydracore Kernel is correctly installed.
Now you can go into CWM and flash the Rom.

(to go in recovery press Volume UP + Power Button + Home Button at same time until the phone is booted into CWM)

The kernel you're flashing before installing Rom doesn't matter since with v4 will be replaced by PhilZ 3.1 for XXLS7

...That's all!

Apologies for digging up this old post but I am wading through the posts and playing catchup!

Has anybody rooted using this method? I am a first time user of Odin and it looks dodge. I've downloaded the Hydracore.tar file. and all I need to do is click "Start" ...

Just worried that I am going to brick my 4 hour old Note :D

(I've just come from a JB nexus device and ICS 4.0.4 on this device just seems so laggy. I need JB back in my life ASAP) lol
 
My battery has decided that it's had enough. Goes from fully charged to "empty" in 10 minutes. Screen flickers a lot and then it just crashes.
 
I have a slim case (black) for the Note 2 if anyone needs one. Will sell it for less than cost + import duty.

I've downloaded the ROM, and will be flashing later today. The phone was preloaded with GB and I upgraded via Kies expecting JB, but instead I am sitting with ICS 4.0.4. The guide you posted sugest that in order to do a clean install, you would have to load GB again, then wipe cache etc. and then install the JB rom.

Has anyone just upgraded from ICS to JB ? Obviously I will not be wiping cache due to the bricking issue !

I suppose the other option is to root with a safe kernel like mentioned above, then wipe and then upgrade with the rom ?

That guides actually old and intended for upgrading to ICS, but if you try and switch from custom to official your likely to break your phone, hence the "go back to GB first"
Personally I went from GB to ICS to JB to JB official. I just use it as a reference so that I setup Odin properly, generally forget which block to tick int he months between upgrade.

You can safely go direct from ICS to JB, just ignore everything that's not about the actual upgrade part, think its 1b. I would root if I were u as the new JB rom comes with a whole lot of extra Samsung and Google **** that we cant even use in this country and only way to remove em is with rooting.

Still very confusing for me. I am a noob at this.
Need to root and upgrade to jb
 
I upgraded from GB to ICS via Kies. Then I followed the guide and upgrade to official JB via Odin. EasyPeasy.

Then I got clever, and tried to root using HydraCore and all hell broke loose. CranialBlaze will agree :) Seems like hydracore was more compatible with ICS instead of JB. I'm not saying its differcult, it just took a few years off my life as I was certain I bricked my new phone this morning. By luck, I managed to get into download mode and reflashed to JB.

I'm done stuffing around.

I am currently sitting on ICS as well, however my baseband version is XXLRK. Will the same process work for me?

Also, very interested in the battery life post update. What is your experience over the last few days and general consensus here.
