I had high hopes when vermaak joined the bok group, then I thought great Kockott will get a call up because of his great form in Europe.... alas we are stuck with RP :p

You only realize how average RP is when FdP comes on but then again, FdP is the worlds top scrumhalf!!

I know it is an early call but keep an eye on Shaun Venter at the Cheetahs this year.

He was pretty decent at the Kings. Now add to that a world class forward pack in front of him and the added competition of trying to get a starting spot ahead of Sarel Pretorius. He is going to be lifting his game 100%.

I expect him to have such a good season that he will be a Bok contender by the end of the year.

Wonder of FdP would be included in the Bok group for RWC 2015?

Surely. He still got a good few seasons in him...

I reckon we produce world class scrumhalves like NZ produce flyhalves. No shortage.

If that is the case I can almost guarantee Vic Matfield would also be included, dont think he will play all the matches in RWC 2015 but will definitely be there to provide that little extra experience to the squad and to help the youngsters. We can go at Kiewiet because of his age all we want, but he still is a world class lock.

Well there's a good 5 years between them. Add to that the shorter life span of a forward vs a back and I don't believe the 2 are comparable.

Having said that if Vic can replicate the form prior to retiring then I'm sure any right coach any where in the world would select him for rwc 2015.

EDIT: I would say lock is another area where SA consistently produce world class players. I reckon with a fully fit and firing Eben and Flip, Victor might battle to make the starting XV.

Flip has come a long way. Unfortunately he will now never shake the "thug" tag and will simply be penalised more because he is Flip van der Merwe.

I do not get why these guys cultivate these reputations.

They take the meaning of Rugby literally. If you in my way, i'll make a way through and I will tackle you no matter what.

Must be a good stress reliever. Must of been Bakkies understudy.

Fully agree. According to the media Kiewiet is in great shape maybe even better than he was, Flip and Ysterbeth is great locks no doubt about that even youngster Peter-Steph du Tiot is showing what he is worth. The problem being is that all of them are great nr 4 locks, Flip is trying to fill the role of the nr 5 lock, but is not there yet. So we have a problem on the nr 5.

Any thoughts?

PSdT I think will be groomed to be the new no 5 lock.

Also if Flip keeps his head about himself as he did vs NZ in NZ last year he is the current answer to the no. 5 jersey.

Watson: Rugby needs two refs

(not sure if I should post it here  )

Cape Town - South African referees boss André Watson says two referees on the field is the way forward for world rugby.

This system will be trialled in this year's local Varsity Cup competition, and has been used in hostel games at Stellenbosch University over a long period.

"I firmly believe that for the sake of accuracy we should consider two referees in world rugby," Watson told Die Burger's website.

"In my days as referee there were between 100 and 120 tackles in a game. Now it's more than 200.

"A lot of emphasis is put on defence and in some games the tackle count has reached 300. Two referees will help a lot."

Watson believes two referees would make it easier to officiate at the breakdowns.

"A referee can only be on one side of the ruck. Due to his positioning he may not see the ball and miss a lot of transgressions. Two referees will help us there.

"The feedback from the Varsity Cup coaches after their warm-up games was very positive.

"The game flows better and there are fewer penalties, because the players behave themselves. There is also more communication from referees to prevent transgressions," continued Watson.

Hmm, how would that work? Who gets to make the final decision for an infringement?

Both, I think. They can also confer.

On a side note, I always find it ironic when Andre Watson talks about improved decision making in rugby. Lol...

Okay. So we all knew it, but it has been officially confirmed that Matfield is making a comeback.

Contracted to the Bulls for 4 years. Minimum of 2 years as a player and the rest as coach.

But what if they differ? One guy says the tackler didn't roll away soon enough, other one says he did...

Then they dial Andre Watson on his cell to make the call using his decades of experience in making schit up on the field. Seems pretty foolproof to me...
