Pocock cops three week ban

NEWS: BRUMBIES STAR DAVID POCOCK HAS BEEN SUSPENDED FOR THREE WEEKS FOR CHOKING AN OPPONENT DURING HIS TEAM'S 23-48 LOSS TO THE CHIEFS LAST SATURDAY.

Pocock grasped the neck of Chiefs No.8 Michael Leitch during a maul in the 74th minute of the match at GIO Stadium in Canberra.

The SANZAAR Duty Judicial Officer Adam Cassleden has accepted a guilty plea from Pocock for contravening Law 10.4(e) Playing a player without the ball is dangerous play, after he was cited.

Due to the fact the Brumbies have a scheduled bye in Round Seven, Pocock will miss Round Eight and Round Nine of Super Rugby, in effect making it a two match sanction.

"Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including from the player and submissions from his legal representative I accepted the player's admission that he had committed an act of foul play contrary to law 10.4(e)," said Cassleden.

"In its Memorandum on 'Dangerous tackles (high tackles), dangerous grasping of neck and/or head area of player not in possession of the ball and dangerous grasping/holding of ball carrier above the line of the shoulder' dated 22 May 2015, World Rugby stated 'this type of dangerous play which is foul play must be dealt with severely by match officials and all those involved in the disciplinary process'.

"With respect to sanction I deemed the act of foul play merited a low-end entry point of two weeks. I then added one week for aggravation due to the need to deter this type of dangerous foul play. However, taking into account mitigating factors including the player's early plea, his good character, his genuine remorse and his excellent disciplinary record I reduced the suspension to a period of two weeks.

"The player accepted my indication of sanction of two weeks, and is therefore suspended from all forms of rugby up to and including Sunday, April 24. The player is free to resume playing on April 25."

Big loss, considering that it is the games against the Crusaders and Highlanders where experience will count at the breakdowns. But yah, the Brumbies do have depth in their squad Fardy is more than good to carry the tempo. Butler, Smiler and Vaea… that are some good loosies in their squad. I guess Smiler will start with Butler on the bench, Vaea will stay on eight.

That is true.

I still long for the proper Super Rugby competitions - Super 12, which had some gnarly matches each and every week. Even Super 14 was stomachable. But this monstrosity we have now with watered-down teams everywhere and unfair scheduling is not for me.

EDIT: There are also political interference issues in our sport which I refuse to support anymore, but not getting into that here.

In a somewhat tersely-worded statement, SANZAAR this morning confirmed that Sharks Director of Rugby Gary Gold will attend a disciplinary hearing relating to his “conduct” during the Crusaders game on 26 March.

I think that it was supposed to be an April Fool… though there are Forum mentions on this dating back to the 30th. This would had been SANZAAR news by now. But yah, Goromaru is essentially dropped by the Reds, and with the new structure since they had sacked their coach there is no place in the team to be catered by Goromaru, he is either a bench warmer or an ‘recovery’ replacement.

The Wallabies (ahem, Brumbies and Tahs) are going to be worn-down by the British. The Japanese going up against the Scottish… oh… they will possibly rotate 1st selections to keep the Sunwolves healthy. Canada is also an 'hard' match. I wonder, will Leitch, Amanaki, Goromaru and Tanaka play?

The All Blacks and the Springboks will be okay. I do not think that Wales or Ireland are that much a threat anymore since the RWC. For the Springboks, that depends on the new Springbok coach… the physicality may still impact the Super Rugby.

The Pumas has the French to play, twice. They will survive.

USA vs Russia. Bookmarked.

Gold sanctioned for misconduct

A SANZAAR Judicial Hearing conducted by Nigel Hampton QC (New Zealand) has found the Sharks Head Coach, Gary Gold, guilty of Misconduct under the SANZAAR Code of Conduct following the Sharks v Crusaders match on 26 March 2016.

Mr Gold admitted a charge of Misconduct, which also involved two breaches of the Super Rugby Competition Rules, by engaging with the Television Match Official (TMO) during the second half of the match.

In his finding Mr Hampton QC concluded that, by his own admission, Mr Gold had approached the TMO on two separate occasions (65th and 71st minutes) and had used crude and insulting language toward the Match Official.

Meh, Louis Schreuder... but it is good to see Masimla given a chance due to this rotation. The team is still good enough, however the Sunwolves can win this if, and if only, they play without error.
