Elton injury shock for Boks

Springbok rugby was dealt a massive setback with the news that the form flyhalf of Vodacom Super Rugby, Elton Jantjies, has been ruled out of action with a fractured finger.

Jantjies will undergo surgery immediately but will be out for between three and four weeks, effectively putting him out for the first two tests against Ireland in Cape Town and Johannesburg respectively.

And while Jantjies may well be ready for the third test in Port Elizabeth the injury is a massive blow for new Springbok coach Allister Coetzee.

Without incumbent Handre Pollard, the Sharks pivot Pat Lambie is the obvious candidate to take the number 10 jersey now for the Irish tests, and Lambie himself only recently returned from injury.

Luckily for Coetzee the Sharks have a bye this week and its certain the message will go out to wrap Lambie in cotton wool ahead of the test series.

Jantjies finally succumbed to the third injury this season, surviving a wrist injury that initially looked as if it required surgery before being cleared to play. Two weeks later he hobbled off with a medial knee ligament strain and the South African rugby fans’ collective breath was held again.

But Jantjies returned to action showing no effects of the injury and continued as the form flyhalf in the competition.

The problem now for coach Allister Coetzee is while he may have a starting flyhalf for the tests against Ireland, just who will the back-up be when he announces his squad to face the Irish this coming weekend in Cape Town.

Johan Goosen has been playing mostly at fullback for Racing Metro in France, but has had good form of late, while former starter Morne Steyn is at Stade Francais.

Dimitri Catrakilis has been part of the Montpellier revolution under Jake White and any of these three are likely to be included in the side to face Ireland.

Goosen has possibly the best chance as the second flyhalf often needs to cover fullback as well, and his versatility may count for him in the test series.

Currently in South Africa there are not too many options with many of the flyhalves still finding their feet at Super Rugby.

Garth April looks a fine bet for the future but may not have played enough to get the nod from the selectors, while the same is expected to count against Jean-Luc du Plessis at the Stormers.

The other flyhalves are apparently not in the Bok picture, although Jantjies’ injury could have changed that.

Along with the second flyhalf, the Bok coach may need to rethink his strategy as he may also have earmarked Goosen as the second fullback and may now need to find another utility back to fulfil that role in the squad.

• In another cruel twist for the Lions, fullback Jaco van der Walt was ruled out for six weeks after sustaining a grade 3 PCL injury to his knee. Van der Walt is likely to be replaced by Sylvian Mahuza, who came off the bench last weekend when Van der Walt went off.

Nadolo says 'no' to Fiji

Cape Town - Nemani Nadolo's decision to steer clear of the Fijian Test team should add some ammunition to the Crusaders' joy box as they prepare to motor down Super Rugby's home stretch.

According to the Stuff website, left wing Nadolo, who will make his return from a four-week suspension against the Blues in Auckland on Saturday and joins French club Montpellier when the SANZAAR competition season ends, has decided not to play for Fiji against Tonga, Samoa and Georgia in Suva next month for "personal reasons".

I'm quite sure that Blackadder is indeed happy with Nadolo's decision. It is a sorry that he is leaving Super Rugby to go play in France at Montpellier, he is only 27 and could had contributed more to the Southern Hemisphere.

In my opinion, the rugby in the North has reached a stage where world-class Southern Hemisphere players go play to retire nowadays. However, by 2020 Super Rugby may be more lucrative than the Northern rugby competitions which would assist in retaining the quality down under…

Mallet has provided reason in the article why he would pick these players. I have 2-5 changes that I would make to his match day 23.
 
Malherbe has been showed up a lot this year, would drop to bench ....... likewise Serfontein and JP, they just haven't done enough consistent. Goosen just no.



I don't think the team is going to be anywhere close to that though. Who knows what AC is going for.

Who to replace Jantjies, though? Not entirely sure about Goosen. He played well for Racing 92 this season, but is a serial under-performer in the Springbok jersey. Also not entirely sold on Ntubeni.

Lambie is the obvious choice, there simply is no other super rugby flyhalf that comes close to Springbok quality.

- Pietersen
- Nyakane
- Ntubeni
- The entire starting front row, ok Malherbe can stay.

Need to include:
- Marx (Lions)
- Neus (Lions)
- Actually the entire Lions front row, starting and benchies
- And we need to include Combrinck (Lions)

I am waiting on the squad announcement… besides Coetzee and his team will have very little time to work with the squad, also knowing that our coaching team had a late appointment. Cheika and Hansen had been actively working with their respective rugby unions since they started with practice this year. Coetzee has only recently made his rounds, all in all cohesion will be a troubling aspect... our rugby coaches each has a unique approach to game styles.

Also noting that SARU would ‘maybe’ expect Coetzee to play one experimental match against the Irish which would include players like April, Sergeal Peterson etc. in the match day 23.

Then in my opinion, Malherbe had his last good game in the 2015 RWC, he had been lacklustre this year and Schalk always speaks out above him in a match when Malherbe is the captain or co-captain.

They want cohesion, then they can cart the Green and Gold to the Lions locker room. I wouldn’t blame Coetzee in this test series should things go astray. At the end, there are phenomenal players amongst the SA unions when coached correctly, a player like Lood will never grow at the Cheetahs at this stage. Then with the player’s exodus we will see young players leaving the Green and Gold and we are also transcending into new quota levels.

Personally I do not think that the Irish is as strong as they had been prior the 2015 RWC, but they will come to win, no doubt. The question remains, will Coetzee pick the correct team, the players that the Union coaches has recommended and the team that he knows will play to his coaching team’s desire?

One thing though, seeing the game style the Irish had, it is very similar to what the Sharks are playing at the moment. The Irish can easy adapt between conservative and dynamic rugby combined with tactical kicking, so an enterprising game might be quickly shut down.

Coetzee tried the conservative WP approach in the Top League with Japanese players, the opposition trumped him. I do not know what to expect... like I said, he will have very little impact on how the Springboks approach the Irish, the squad will be too adapted to their respective Union play styles, it is going to be quite individualistic...

The Brumbies need to at least put 15+ points over the 'lesser' Sunwolves to prove their worth. The Sunwolves had a remarkable game against the Reds, even though they had lost, they had shown to be competitive at a higher level, but it is yet to be seen that the rotation will mirror their last week’s result. The Brumbies to win by 25+ going by the match day 23, who knows :whistle:
