SANZAAR planning a “better structure” for Super Rugby

Super Rugby’s controversial format will not be changed next year but a new format could be brought in as soon as the 2018 season.

According to reports SANZAAR has hired a consultancy firm who will look at the format over the next six months and they will map out its 10 year strategic vision (2016-2025).

A major part of the process will be look into the current problematic conference style structure which has teams with less points ranked higher than those with more points.

SANZAAR chief executive Andy Marinos says that everything will be looked at and considered including expanding into new territories or the reduction of teams in some countries.

It’s unlikely that New Zealand will drop one of their teams and it’s even more unlikely that South Africa will drop a team as they pushed the current expansion to include a sixth team.

There has however been rumblings in Australia about dropping the Force and adding a second team in Sydney.

A yet to be named consultancy company will work with the respective Sanzaar national unions, Super Rugby franchises, broadcasters and commercial partners before they sign off with a new and clear direction at the end of this year.

Critics of the Super Rugby system say that the current format lacks integrity as some teams get easier routes into the play off as they avoid the top teams so regaining some of the compromised integrity and credibility should be a focus.

I see Jacques Potgieter has joined the Bulls with immediate effect. So the Sharks essentially paid for him to do rehabilitation work at their facilities without him even playing 1 minute in a Sharks jersey... :confused:

So, the co-captain at the Stormers will most likely take the captaincy. I would had given it to Schalk, ahem, mainly due to his leadership than his playing ability in the backline.

In the opening minutes the Saders outclassed AFR1 by miles. Then… they secured their victory, started playing conservative rugby which the Tahs simply took their advantage a bit late in to the game. The same happened when the Saders played the Sharks.

There is absolutely no way in my pov how the Stormers, Bulls or Cheetahs could be victorious against any top three New Zealand side at this stage.

I'm glad to see Nadolo back next weekend against the Blues.

Powerhouse centre Samu Kerevi has re-signed with the Queensland Reds until the end of 2018, the club announced on Friday.

Kerevi has been one of Queensland’s standout players in 2016, leading the side in run metres (628) and carries (120) for the season.

The 22-year-old has been touted as a major Wallabies chance this season, likely to bob up in the centres in the wake of Kurtley Beale’s season-ending injury.

As damaging as he is on the field, it’s Kerevi’s commitment to his teammates and family that has garnered him somewhat of a cult figure status in Queensland, no more so than in his emotional response to a recent injury blow.

Kerevi will be a crucial part of any potential success the Reds could hope for and he said the desire to build something at Ballymore was a key reason for staying put.

The Reds has strong name attached to their rugby union next year, it is good to the Kerevi commit to the union. Hell, there are rumours that they want to keep Goromaru than having Toulon scoop him up… knowing how ‘well’ he has played Super Rugby.

It would be interesting to see how their management team will pan out next year…

Crusaders will be kicking themselves for not walking away with the BP from this game. Especially considering how close their log is.

I just can't see any SA team beating 2 or 3 NZ teams in 3 weeks. Not even my beloved Lions.

so that would make the Bulls player pool incredibly large. Between these 4 rugby unions I do not see any reason to sign more players outside their Super Rugby reach in to registering with the Blue Bulls. What I do see is that when another rugby union has an interest in a player within the Bulls player pool, that it might amount to an expensive negotiation, release and registration.
 
Good game by the Reds and Sunwolves. Kerevi and the Reds bench turned the game. Well done, it was competitive throughout.
 
11, 2, 8, 2, 11... Try. Marks and Whiteley are something else.
