Official Super Rugby 2016 Thread

Sharks jerseys are becoming more and more like European ones. Chock full of sponsors

Must say though we are playing a much more dynamic type of rugby. Accuracy isn't there just yet but it's a good sign.

Doing some nice All blackesque backs running off forwards, good lines and clever passes.

Good workout for the Sharks. Lambie a big worry though. Gees, the guy is on a prolific run of bad luck!

Du Preez brothers were immense. Maturing nicely. They're still babies.

Paul looked very sharp and Andre also looking good.

Let's hope they can keep injuries to a minimum. They could be competitive.

Thought the anthems at the start was a bit of a stretch.

They switched to the FSRU logo, that's odd. There used to be a separate (Central) Cheetahs logo before.

Yeah it was announced last year some time that they are going to do away with the other logo and use the traditional Cheetahs logo for all tournaments/teams.

I read up on this now, FSRU claim to now be the sole owners of the franchise. Did they have to pay out the Griquas and Griffons? How exactly do Super Rugby franchises work in SA, SARU took the Southern Kings franchise summarily.

Good to watch some live rugby yesterday.

The Lions basically had 3 teams over the two games, each team playing about 3/4 of a game (give or take).

First game against the Falcons. The score (which I can't be sure off because the manually scoreboard was run by a kid who sometimes failed at maths) was 55-12 (give or take).

Second game against the Leopards. The score (again, definitely spotted one or two arithmetic issues) were around the 106-0 mark.

So I had a look at the Bulls and Cheetahs, that played in Harare...

Q1: Why Harare?
^ Two SA teams and they go play in Zim? Why?

Q2: What use is it, when you play team in a warm up game that only contains about 3 players that will feature at all in the Super Rugby competition?
^ This makes no sense to me. A complete waste of time.

They played in Zim, because a marketing company paid them big money. Like how EU football clubs play here and all over the world in the off season. The offical answer is usually something about spreading the game though.

So Pollard is out of Super Rugby.
Cape Town - Bulls and Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard has been ruled out of the Super Rugby season as well as the Springboks’ June Test series in Ireland.
Shoulder injury

So Pollard is out of Super Rugby.

Shoulder injury

Cruciate knee ligaments. He was just getting over a shoulder injury.

Massive blow to the Bulls though. Does that mean Tiaan Schoeman is now the first choice 10 or is Morne Steyn back in the picture? And what about Derrick Hougaard? Read somewhere he was making a comeback

Nope. Hougaard ruled out a return, as per doctor's orders. Steyn is raking in the € in France, not coming back.

Terribly sad news for Pollard.

Bulls blow, Pollard out of Super Rugby

Bulls and Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard has been ruled out of the Super Rugby season as well as the Springboks’ June Test series in Ireland.

According to SuperSport.com, Pollard tore his knee ligaments during a freak training ground accident at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday.

Pollard, 21, was just beginning his recovery after a shoulder injury and would have been reassessed in a fortnight’s time, but a simple passing exercise without contact turned into a nightmare for coach Nollis Marais.

Pollard had recently returned to the Bulls following a stint with the NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes in Japan.

Pollard boasts 20 Test caps for the Springboks since making his debut against Scotland in June 2014.

Most likely in my opinion. Looking at the young team which had played against the Cheetahs in Zimbabwe,

Vodacom Blue Bulls
15 Divan Rossouw, 14 Kefentse Mahlo, 13 Dries Swanepoel, 12 Dan Kriel, 11 Jade Stighling, 10 Tian Schoeman, 9 Piet Van Zyl, 8 Hanro Liebenberg, 7 Nicolaas Janse Van Rensburg, 6 Freddy Ngoza, 5 Marvin Orie, 4 Jason Jenkins, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 Lizo Gqoboka.

Substitutes: 16 Jaco Visagie, 17 Pierre Schoeman, 18 Nqoba Mxoli, 19 Irne Herbst, 20 Riekert Hattingh, 21 Ivan Van Zyl, 22 Francois Brummer, 23 Jt Jackson, 24 Jamba Ulengo.

Schoeman is doing good and Brummer has the experience. However, without Pollard there is a gap. Louis Fouché is playing at the EP Kings. You need a third 'capable' man...

Louis Fouché can stay there he is not a good flyhalf anyway. What about Tony Jantjies? Know he is not contracted with the Kings anymore, wonder what happened to him.
