Goosen: S15 miracle man

Cape Town – The season may be very young but there has been an auspicious start statistically by the Cheetahs’ exciting, rookie flyhalf Johan Goosen.

Stats issued by the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper (via the Rugby Heaven website) this week indicate that the 19-year-old, playing his first season at this level, heads up several categories after four weeks of activity.

Goosen is the leading points scorer, just for starters, with 65 – an eight-point cushion over the Hurricanes’ similarly raw Beauden Barrett in second spot.

He has also kicked the most penalty goals (16), just ahead of the Reds’ now-injured Mike Harris with 15.

Goosen also shares most conversions (seven) with all of the Chiefs’ Aaron Cruden and compatriots Morne Steyn (Bulls) and Pat Lambie (Sharks).

Always renowned for the prodigious distance he gets off his boot, whether from the tee or out of hand, the Cheetahs man also boasts the most kick metres (1 607m), ahead of the Stormers’ diminutive fullback Joe Pietersen (1 338m).

As if to demonstrate that he is not just a metronomic kicker, significantly, Goosen is sixth for “most running metres” and the best flyhalf in this category (273m). Top of the pile here is the Chiefs’ ever-popular inside centre Sonny Bill Williams.

Williams unsurprisingly also leads the category for his forte, most off-loads (11), with Goosen next best-placed with nine ... only further illustrating the roundedness of his game?

Some great stats there and I believe he can become the nr 10 that SA have been missing for some time now :D

I would just like to see him keep it up through out the whole super rugby season.

I would also like to see him included in the SA group for tests this year if his form holds.

Prodigious talent!! Very exciting prospect!! Just needs to toughen/bulk up a bit and he is going to be a legend!!!

Blues / Hurricanes
They've been equally unimpressive this season, with the Hurricanes perhaps only slightly better but they did enjoy some easy opposition in the Force and were lucky against the Lions.

Rebels / W Force
The Rebels seemed determined to get out the starting blocks but at the same time, the Force need to begin their campaign. Expect a mess in this one. But with the Force feeling tough on their 'Tahs victory, they should take it.

Waratahs / Sharks
I have no idea what to call here. 'Tahs are licking their paws after Force trumped them at the end while Sharks are anxious for any away win they can get. I'll change my mind when I know who's blowing this one...


Crusaders / Cheetahs
'Saders need some points and will take them

Brumbies / Highlanders
I'd like to see the Brumbies take this one, although previous victories may not have been deserved. Highlanders are going to trip up sooner or later and I look to it happening in this clash.

Bulls / Reds
Bulls will want to bounce back from Blues loss and will capitalise on the thin Reds team.

Lions / Stormers
The only reason I am throwing my lot in with the stormers is the injury woes the Lions are suffering. Pity...

No "bulking up" please! :mad: When Andre Pretorius "bulked up" he lost flair etc etc.

A guy like Shane Williams is not big yet he was one of the first choice wingers in world rugby for the last 4-5 years.

1.85 and 85kg is not that small either for a 19/20 year old, I am suer he will fill out a bit in the next 3-4 years.

The Golden Goose!!!!! The kid is phenomenal. Lacks some experience but it will come with time. And should he stay relatively injury free, will go on to become a Bok legend

I had the privilege to interview him while he was still at school. Even then he was amazing.

When I Google his name the first thing that pops up is my interview with him. Should maybe look into getting a follow up interview going with him.

All difficult picks this weekend. Except for the Bulls and Lions. And perhaps the Crusaders.

Reason I am thinking Blues will lose? They just traveled back from Newlands and now their captain Mealamu is also out. The Hurricanes on the other hand JUST lost to the Highlanders and did no traveling.

Rebels will still surprise a few sides this season. They were extremely good with ball in hand against the Cheetahs. And the Rebels and Force are pretty much the equivalent of Cheetahs vs Lions in SA. Both wooden spoon contenders and it could go either way.

Waratahs. Yeah that was a tough pick but they seem to be coming apart at the edges. Lost to the Force in the dying minutes but they weren't convincing at all. And the Sharks seem to be getting better. Or I hope so for my Superbru!

Highlanders was purely a gamble. Every team has that hiccup. I'm hoping for Superbru it is this weekend. I also factored into it that Eddie Jones is helping out at the Brumbies now. If not, I will at least be happy to see Jake White's ponies getting klapped!

Very tough indeed!

I figure the Blues must come through at some stage. They have injuries, but a couple of players are back - and home ground advantage might pip it in their favour.

Reckon the Force are simply a better side. Might be wrong, and the Rebels will be hungry for their first win.

Very tough call, but I'm not completely convinced by the Sharks yet. This game could go either way, but I'm banking on travel fatigue and a Waratahs team smarting after their defeat last week.

Agreed, Highlanders will stumble somewhere, but on form they must be favourites. Plus I don't like the Brumbies, not going to take a flyer on them. :-)

This is what I am thinking thus far:

Canes
Sharks
Crusaders
Highlanders
Brumbies
Bulls
Stormers

Bulls, Lions and Cheethas calls are the easiest this round imo, but it still did not make them easy :(

EDIT: I have a feeling that this weekend we will see the leader board shift a lot ... as long as I go up and not down I am happy :p:D

As it turns out, The Sharks can't play proper rugby in SA, so I'm hoping the travel fatigue does them the world of good...:D

Rebels vs W Force - Rebels.
Waratahs vs Sharks - If the Sharks aren't affected by the lag and they start how they ended last week, they will take it easily.
