Kaplan has also been axed - thank heavens

Following a thorough review of performances during the recently concluded Six Nations, the selection committee commitment to promoting consistency has been reflected in the latest selections with nine elite referees appointed to the top games in what is a busy June international window that also sees the beginning of the schedule involving tours to Tier 2 Unions.

They are:

George Clancy (Ireland)
Jérôme Garcès (France)
Craig Joubert (South Africa)
Nigel Owens (Wales)
Jaco Peyper (South Africa)
Chris Pollock (New Zealand)
Romain Poite (France)
Alain Rolland (Ireland)
Steve Walsh (Australia)

The Springboks' three-Test series against England in June will be reffed by Steve Walsh (Durban and Port Elizabeth) and Alain Rolland (Johannesburg).

Can someone please tell me how the first (there could be more) try was awarded to the Stormers? Surely there was a 4th, 5th, etc movement trying to ground the ball or are you allowed to do what you like after the try line? It was not momentum pushing the ball down as one eyed Skinstad would have us believe in the commentary.

I thought it was good. No double, triple, etc movements from what I saw.
 
Awesome game by the Bulls tonight. I would never have predicted that. And the 2011 S15 champions just got a thrashing of note. Not going to do their confidence any good :D

Yes and I was thinking a similar thing - not just the Bulls, but the whole game seemed to go flat after the first 5 min. But then the Bulls hammered them - nice guys! :D But MH, your comment was justified at the time you posted. :p

Great News! Bryce Lawrence has been axed from the IRB Referees Panel and Paddy O'Brien steps down to take over similar role with IRB Rugby 7's
I wouldn't normally post anything on a Saturday if you know the Friday nights I have, but EISH! I think this calls for a massive exception The interweb is a blaze at the moment with official reports by the IRB that Bryce Lawrence has been axed from its elite referees panel. And the news doesn't get any better than when it comes directly from the horse's mouth of course.

Earlier this morning the IRB unveiled its referee restructure plan and the biggest news coming out of it is the fact the Bryce Lawrence "NZ Referee Of The Year" mind you, has been axed from its panel of elite referees, secondly Paddy O'Brien has been shifted to take over a similar role in the IRB Rugby Sevens. I can tell you now that everyone supporting the Bryce Lawrence Facebook Petition Page that is reading right now, is smiling rather sweetly

So basically what's the deal with all this?

As part of an ongoing review, the IRB has appointed a committee that will oversee referee selections based on merit and performance. The committee, which includes former elite referees Lyndon Bray, Tappe Henning (both SANZAR), Donal Courtney and Clayton Thomas (both Six Nations), will meet four times a year to discuss referee selections for the forthcoming international window in the lead up to Rugby World Cup 2015. To be honest, I welcome this with open arms and think its a brilliant idea that is brilliant for Rugby. Finally referees will be under a strict selection process which will be based on performance just like players, so that only the best referees will be reffing the big games. I guess the whole aim of this is that come Rugby World Cup 2015, the referee panel will be the best of best, kinda like the Top Gun of Rugby Referees, so that we hopefully won't have a repeat of the dog show that we saw over the last Rugby World Cup. I'm glad that the IRB have listened to the calls of their supporters and made a good effort to have a stricter selection process in place with regards to Refs, well done chaps. So there you have it, AWESOME result!

Bit of a double whammy since I know a massive amount of people are just as glad to see Paddy go, all in all, Rugby is definitely the winner today!

Any news on why he did that? I doubt it was a team tactic to be happy with the bonus point for losing with less than seven as his team mates lookd stunned.

Ashley Johnson (On the wing again.... :mad:) looked like he wanted to assault Goosen :D

Very much a team tactic if you ask me.

They would have been very satisfied with a point from this fixture. Even an off Saders side is expected to beat the Cheetahs comfortably playing at home.

Last years fixture in Bloem the Cheetahs won against all odds...

Really enjoying watching the Cheetahs play. Very entertaining and skillful side, just lack a bit of street cred and firepower in the engine room.

+1, they need a couple of good "back up players" as the season will be a very long one for them if they lose any three/four of their "top players".

I still think they could have scored and drawn the game. Pity we will never know.

Ja, they've scored some excellent long range tries already this season but the odds of them doing it on consecutive Saturdays in the dying minutes to save the game is highly unlikely.... lol...

True, but I would have liked to see the Cheetahs try. I for one do not want a flyhalf with all the talent in the world with a defeatist attitude.

I am sure the '95 bokke also never realistically had a shot at winning the world cup :p

Ja, and if he had run from his 22 and the Blues turned it over and scored, denying the Cheetahs the margin bonus point, this morning we would all be lamenting his decision to run.

I dunno about that, quoting Naas after the game: "It's not like the Cheetahs are in any danger of finishing first that they need the points"
