Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

I never had any issues with my old prepaid MTN simcard in my SGS.
All USSD codes worked just fine for data and voice, etc.

All USSD codes work fine. The problem only appears to happen when receiving the confirmation SMS from MTN via cell no '555'. I havent tried it since I upgraded my firmware to stock 2.2.1 (mine is an UK import SGS - upgraded thru Kies - no hack!) The process com.android.phone is a common problem tho and it relates to Android and not the phone itself. Just google it and see what comes back. It all seems to point to the problem being with the sim...

I need to actually get a new sim card for my contract - so once that is done hopefully I wont see the problem again - irregular as it is.

when i charge my phone, like today for example, i started the charge from 25% remaining battery

My phone alerts me a good few hours later that it is fully charged - so i unplug the charger. after a few seconds my battery widget (called battery widget) shows me i have 96% charge. go to settings -> about phone -> status ... and it confirms the 96% charge.

so i plug the charger back in, and the lock screen even confirms the 96% charge.

a few mins later it buzzes again that its completely charged, this time 97% shows after a few seconds of removing the charger.

I kept doing this, until it hit 100%... anyone know why this is happening ?

That's normal with a 2.2.1....are you using that firmware?

Beyond that, the best advice I can offer is to stop paying such close attention to your battery gauge and to just use your phone. Charge it whenever you can

My new mantra

thanks 370z - very helpful indeed

SGS stuck on boot sequence

I've had my SGS since November, still on 2.1 Eclair, but with voodoo lagfix applied. It's been working fine like that for at least a month.

However, the other day I removed the battery while the phone was booting up (silly, I know) and when I tried to restart it, it gets stuck at the flashing 'S' symbol (after the music and the blue blocks animation).

The problem is that I don't have 3-button recovery mode working, and the USB debugging mode is off.

So it seems I need to get Samsung to reflash the OS.

I spoke to the Samsung technicians at Vodaworld and they said it takes about 20 minutes to complete this operation. My main problem is that I am an MTN subscriber, and they don't service MTN. So I took it to an MTN repair centre and they said I have to book the phone in and the turnaround time is 6-8 weeks! I've hardly had the phone 8 weeks. Surely that is ludicrous?!

Does anyone know how to get a phone reflashed/fixed without going through this crazy turnaround time?

where u at? I noticed a Samsung approved service centre on Garsfontein Rd. Dunno if they do cellphones. Give them a call. They are near the corner of Hans Strijdom (M10) and Garsfontein Rd. Dont go there during peak traffic if you gonna go.

Let's get this straight......

You flashed the phone with Voodoo lagfix but didn't bother to make sure the 3 finger salute was working?
You then pulled the battery when booting?
You then remember you forgot to enable USB debugging mode?
You then tried to get Vodacom to fix your MTN phone?
You then discover that MTN's turnaround is 6 weeks and you find this ludicrous?

The only ludicrous part are the first four points.

Soz bud but you're going to have to leanrn the hard way unless some clever chap here can help you.

My Galaxy wouldn't charge after only having it 3 weeks... then it went in for 5 weeks :/ so sigh.

Yep, Hilton - you're absolutely correct. It was all very stupid of me - it's definitely been a learning process. And I deserve to learn it the hard way.

But despite how ridiculous my own actions were, I still find it appalling that if I'd gone with Vodacom as a carrier I'd have been able to get this fixed by now, yet with MTN they need to send the phone away for six weeks. So I'm not looking for some spectacular home remedy involving soldering flashing devices of ebay or anything like that - I just wondered whether anyone with more experience than me in dealing with MTN/Samsung knew whether this 6-8 week turnaround for repairs is the only way to go?

@tygerr,

I found this on the XDA SGS Howto thread (E - Recovery section). Maybe it will work for you.

Found a guide to get into download mode when bricked, even for 3br disabled phones. Dunno if it works but some people say it does:

1. Install Kies or USB drivers for your phone
2. You need ADB (SDK, see faq)
3. You need Odin 1.3
4. Open adb in a commandline shell (dos)
5. Start Odin
6. place Odin and adb windows so you can see both
7. typ in adb "adb reboot download" and press enter
8. take the battery out
9. connect phone to your pc
10. insert battery
11. typ in adb "adb reboot download" again, don't hit enter !
12. when the battery symbol appears, press power to start the phone
13. watch odi for the yellow symbol, when it appears press enter in adb

-> download mode should start

D'oh! I missed the USB debugging bit. So, all hope then rests on the homemade JIG?
Well, actually my hope was resting on MTN coming to the party and figuring out a way to get Samsung to perform the 20 minute re-flash procedure without going through their 6-8 week process...

But after reading up about that USB jig, I may actually give that a go. I've already organised the resistor component from a place in Kyalami. R10 for 5... I'll let you know how it goes.

how long did you leave the s screen to sit there. Mine took quite a while once, i just let it sit, and it eventually booted. could have been around 5 mins.

So whats the latest greatest ROM that's out now?

I'm on Darky's v8.0 Gingerbread edition now and itching to flash something new:D
