Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

I only have one question about this phone, should I get it or should I get an iphone?

Well thats a fair question actually.
I own both an iphone and an android, have been through 3 droids actually.
If you are tech savvy then the android will keep you happier and is way more customizable. If you are not very tech savvy and just want something that will work without being able to customize it too much then get the iphone.

If you like tinkering with technology, are a nice person and are kind to animals then get the Android phone. If you are the 'look at me' type that secretly desires to drive a blinged up hummer then get the iPhone by all means.

HAHAHAHA!!! I like the Samsung Galaxy S but I am reading all these negative comments about the GPS and wireless giving problems. I dont want to get another phone that I am not going to be happy with as I think my wife will kill me if I make the wrong choice this time round. (I go through way to many phones).

I am looking for a phone which takes pretty decent HD videos, nice pics and works well as a music player... I also like the screen size of the Galaxy.

Let me tell you about my wireless. I live in a normal house which is about 15m from the road. The other day I stopped outside my house to drop my wife off. As I pulled up the brake I heard my phone telling me I had new email. It had immediately connected to the wireless in the house and synced to my Exchange server all whilst my arm reached down to pull the brake up.

However.......................I have flashed it with later firmware/kernel etc.

Then look at the Nokia N8. It does all the above exceedingly well.

get an iPhone. The S is sometimes too slow. the lagfix did not make much difference to my phone. Samsung SA are kunts. KIES has been renamed to **** etc. etc.

If you are unwilling to flash your SGS, I would say go for the iPhone. What put me off from the iPhone is that you can't video call over our networks. You can facetime, but that you have to do over wi-fi. My friend has the new iPhone and most of the stuff is quite similar so I really can't put any phone down.

Go for the HTC desire HD. it at least has a flash on the camera and you seem to be quite into the camera aspect of the phone. The iphone sucks until you jailbreak it, much the same as android is limited until rooted.

If I flash the SGS are you able to get the original firmware back on if need be?

Please elaborate. What cant you do with the iPhone?

As for videocalling, how often do ppl do that especially with limited or poor 3G reception.

You can do all basic things that it does but you cant install applications that apple doesnt approve of and there is no cydia which is a repo of 3rd party stuff. I use the functionality that I get from jailbreaking like the ssh shell etc. Some might not but for me its a must. The android phones are better as stock than iphones if you want to be able to customize it. All you can do on a stock iphone is change the background. When its jailbroken then you can change alot more and it becomes a very nice phone.

The videocalling thing is important for some people, where in Pta do you stay that you get limited or poor 3G reception? My house gets poor 3G reception, but I stay in dry spot and MTN is putting up a tower to accommodate me and the rest of my neighborhood. But I videocall my family allot because I am really far away from them and it is good to see one another.

I am either in Lyttelton(bad reception), Moreleta Park(OK) or Hatfield(OK). The problem also arises when the person you calling does not have good reception then the call just fails. So both have to find a good spot and a time to video call. I hear you about the family part. it's always great to see them at least once a week.

I have flashed one of the newer modified ROMs from XDA (Darky's) and i have to say the phone now opens everything instantly, without needing to install a lagfix. I have never seen any device open apps so fast.

The wifi issue which exists pertains to the fact that if Wifi is on, and it is not connected to a network, it drains the battery far too quick. I assume this will be (might already be!) fixed in one of the newer custom ROMs.

So I got this phone this afternoon, and all i have done is install mxit. I now have an endless error loop saying 'Sorry! The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectadly. Please try again'

All I can do is force quit it, only for it to pop up again. It's an endless loop. I did numerous factory resets, and formatted the memory card. WTF is going on? What a piece of ****.

Mine did that when I had an old 16k sim card.
MTN swopped it for a new one. and problem is sorted.

I didn't try mxit though...
