Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

The app i was looking for is called viber. They still only have a iphone app but they are making one for android and blackberry aswell. Hope it comes out soon.

Anyone with this phone in central Dbn area? I imported 3 screen covers, but ended up selling the phone. Willing to sell for R20 for all three - but u have 2 collect. PM me if interested!

The ability to watch 1080p vids and use it as an e-reader is a nice bonus as I was looking to get something that could do that anyway

Just to add, I have seen the iPad, All iPhone's, Galaxy S(own), galaxy Tab and amazon Kindle. If you serious about e-book reading especially if you read allot. Get the Amazon Kindle(Around R1300 from amazon UK direct incl delivery). I know 3 people with one. The screen is amazing. e-paper if you have not read about it look it up. No backlighting and the actually screen looks 99% like real paper. Because it has no backlighting it does not tire your eye's etc. Ofcourse it lacks in every other aspect just thought I would mention for e-readers and for serious readers backlit readers are no substitute for e-paper.

I got an original samsung charger from a vodacom store, but up in jhb. was R139

Thanks will look into it.

Lol I got a unbranded charger on a street corner for R60. Will cross my fingers.

Hehe - reminds of my days with my SE W900i and other random Nokia's - I'd use unbranded chargers on them I got from a store in Lansdowne called Osmonds for R5 each and never had a day's trouble with them :D

Sometimes its easy to forget the dangers of flashing. My Odin crashed yesterday right in the middle of a flash. Luckily the of pc to phone sign came up so no brick for me :D

I try to avoid flashing with odin as far as possible and rather use other methods. When using Odin it seems you are at the mercy of power failures, usb failures, odin failures, windows failure, the usb cable and the usb/phone drivers and the phone itself. Just too many points of failure. When using recovery mode you are limited to failures on the phone itself.

Paranoid much?? Lol but yes, that's very true.

Can anyone tell me why a phone with a 1GHz processor, 512mb RAM and an internal hard drive doesn't make any noise while a computer with the same specs does? What makes the mst noise in a computer

Big deal, if it goes wrong just flash it again, as long as the 3-button recovery works on your phone. Odin/Heimdial (however you spell that other flashing tool) is your only hope when a flash goes bad and bricks your phone.

If your 3-button recovery doesn't work, then you should get it fixed before doing anything else.

I usually use Odin, once you know which files to select it's simple and quick.

PC has moving parts inside - fans, DVD drive, hard drive. Phone doesn't.

Ok just got myself a Galaxy S and while the screen etc is awesome... 2.1 is not. I came from an Optimus one and can say that in many respects it was smoother. I just want to know if anybody has had any success putting 2.2 on this sucker or if anyone has any info on when the official update is coming out.

I'm guessing Christmas present?? Well some are on 2.2. Most have moved to 2.2.1 and some brave souls have moved on to (the very unstable) 2.3. i suggest reading the FAQ here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596 and then browsing the xda forums to find a suitable rom. The newest, most stable one is 2.2.1 aka JPY. Please understand the risks of flashing an unofficial rom, I'm sure you know already. And make sure you can get into download mode before you do anything.

I'm looking for an mp3 player that can actually search the phone and sd card for all music. Issue arises now that I've downloaded music from an ftp directly to my sd card. But the stock music player or Winamp don't have a way to open, search or add songs to a playlist.

Any help on this one?
Only songs I can see are those that have been bluetoothed to the phone directly.

Question. Is there a HOME button on the default android browser? All i see is a favourites button.

Apologies if this is a pathetic question.

Just called Samsung Call Centre. The say Froyo will be released in Feb, no exact date as the mobile service providers must approve of it. One will be able to do the update in store for free under warranty i.e. 2yr if on contract 1yr if you purchased it cash. If not under warranty the cost would be R80. This price was confirmed now with Vodaworld Samsung. Can anyone confirm the file size for OTA update?

In PTA walk-in centres are at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre Shop 13@012 348 6807, Claremont and Montana.

Lets hold thumbs but not our breaths.
