Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

Interesting, thanks. But surely that only applies if there is a notification? So the power use would not apply if there isn't a notification? I am using BLN that comes as part of SpeedMod kernal.

I'm sure you right, so it wont exactly half your power. However I often receive allot of sms at night so it will be on all night. Though I am not in too much in a hurry. Guess I will just wait till it's integrated in a rom.

LOL, that is an impossible question to answer. On the one hand you have people who flash for fun and exploration and are really keen on just looking at the tech, and on the other hand, you will have your average phone users, who just 'want the phone to work'. There will be thousands of people in the middle.

Thanks IdlePhaedrus. I think I'm one of those in the middle, not clued up enough to go exploring the innards but wanting a little more from the phone than I used to be getting on Android 2.1.

The stock JPX and leaked JPU are both excellent, and actually makes the phone do what is was supposed to do out of the box and fixes the two most important issues, lag and GPS. I cannot comment on Darky's or Doc's ROMS because I haven't used them, that is entirely up to you.

BTW, both of those ROM's are on version 6 now.

Yes, I just saw both ROMs got an update. I was on Doc's JP8 for a while, then flitted to Darky's 5.6 JPU. I'll see if his 6.0 JPX ROM is any good. I'll need to get some extra bandwidth too, these ROMs aren't exactly small.

Dang, I turn my back for a second and new versions pop up everywhere.

So if someone is running a custom ROM, say Darky's 5.6 JPU, and is looking to update, is it the general consensus that going to stock JPX is better than getting a custom JPX ROM from Doc, or Darky, or someone else?

Have not tried stock JPX, but it depends on what you want. Stock will not be rooted and not have useful tools preinstalled. If you going to do this anyway consider a mod. Doc's rom is also a bit slimmer than stock and he has an even slimmer slim version. That means many of the default apps need to be installed in market or manually if you want them which is good cause if you don't want one of the default app on stock you cannot uninstall it. Darky's changes the theme quite a bit where with Doc's you get the stock theme and can apply themes if you want. Also applying a lagfix(although not needed on 2.2.1) is probably easier on the customs.

I would say if you don't mind the extra apps preinstalled by samsung and don't plan on rooting or anything stick to stock.
If you want a slightly more optimsed rom or don't want all the extra apps preinstalled(which is impossible or hard to uninstalll)go with one of the customs. Don't expect a big speed gain though.

I think many people are taking matters into their own hands because samsung(SA among other countries) is taking to long to release updates over Kies officially(no reg hack etc).

Food for thought there, thank you Munch. I've not looked into Doc's slim version but will now, I can live without the pre-installed apps. Are you're using Doc's standard version?

I'm told one can root stock JPX using Superoneclick.

I kept in touch with someone who apparently deals with them often and it was a case of "It'll be there in September". That turned into November, and then definitely December. I just got tired of waiting for Samsung SA and I'm glad I took the plunge. I wish I had done it sooner.

Ah! Then you definitely should be using NoLED then. It has this nifty setting where you turn off the LED notifications from say 22:00 until 05:00. I also don't need my phone to break out in Disco light trance when the odd text pops in so it's simply turned off automatically. Very cool.

Thanks gonna check it out :)

Hey guys, I am new to this thread and after reading ~10 pages I feel fairly lost (not hugely up to scratch with all these technical specs)

Would anyone be so kind as to refer me to some good reading material on this phone, as I am considering it as my first choice over the Iphone 4.

wow now i'm tempted to flash JPY.. and I've only had JPX for a bit more than a day!! haha the bug has bitten

what quadrant score you guys getting on JPX? I'm only getting +- 1053, while the XDA guys are getting 1250 consistently :/

I'm running stock JPX via KIES. Which I flashed over rooted (but not lagfixed) JM3.

I can't get to XDA from here.
What changes have been made vs JPX?

The thread isn't altogether long at the moment. There is no mention of a changelog - someone has asked the very same question you have but no answer to it.
Build Time: 2010.12.20 () 15:35:57
Changelist: 757011

Apparently people are going from JPX to JPY via Kies upgrade. Another reports that there is now 26 items in the "Samsung Apps" app.

WOW. Might just do JPY then. :) thanks.

Any recommendations for a car charger please in Cape Town.

Sent from my GT-I9000 using MyBroadband Android App

I got an original samsung charger from a vodacom store, but up in jhb. was R139

ok so I noticed something weird - using the stock internet browser in XXJPX, looking at m.facebook.com, at the bottom it offers to download a bookmark for your phone and then reads your phone type...
so when i was on stock JM3 it said "Download a bookmark for your galaxy S"

Now on official XXJPX via kies it says "Download a bookmark for your Magic"

Awesome, my phone thinks its an HTC Magic! :/

Vodacom Branded Firmware

Is there a way to get the Vodacom Branded firmware?
I need to take my phone in for repairs and I have a different version installed.
