Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

Also, I tried Darky's ROM and it's by far the best I've tried. He should be releasing a new version in the next few days though so maybe hold off for that.

Hey SPiV, what are the things in Darky's ROM that make it a better than Doc's JP8?

Okay 3 button recovery mode is working. What is the best ROM to flash at the moment? I want to upgrade to Froyo 2.2. My phone is rooted and I have the OCLF lag fix installed. Should I uninstall only the lagfix first? I have titanium backup installed.

Here's some details of my phone:
Product code:I9000HKDXFM
Firmware:
PDA:I9000XWJM3
PHONE:I9000XXJM2
CSC:I9000OXXJm2

Honestly, it just feels smoother after applying lag fixes and stuff on both.

There's a wave of new rom's from both though which I haven't tried. They both have a new base which is apparently very fast. (XXJPU)
There are still a few problems with them though. Apparently the Voodoo lagfix doesn't let you enter Mass Storage mode. Titanium backup needs a workaround to get going again. Both new roms have a few bugs which should be sorted in the next few days.

If you want to flash a custom rom, I'd say go for Doc's XXJPO V9. It's safe, it works and you can stay with it for a while until they get the kinks ironed out. Stay away from Darky's 4.1 rom because it seems like there's a kernel problem which will prevent you from changing roms without flashing a stock Eclair rom first, which is probably what I'll have to do.

Always undo a lagfix before installing a new rom. You can keep root.

Thanks for the info. I'm running Doc's BUJP8 v9.0.1 and it seems to be fine but as someone told me, exploring custom ROM's is like Pringles, once you pop you can't stop.

I have heard about issues with the JPU versions and the workarounds to get it functioning are a little too hairy for me.

I see Darky has released v5.1 Gingerbread version http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091.

Found an awesome launcher called Netfront Life available on the market. A bit laggy though

Well I installed the leaked JPU firmware today, and I'm not running any custom ROMs or kernel any more. My phone seems every bit as fast as it did with the Speedmod kernel using EXT4 lagfix. Faster in some cases, it doesn't get bogged down when apps are installing in the background.
Sadly it seems to do a factory reset when installing, had to use Titanium Backup. Couldn't restore settings from some apps but that's no big deal.

Well now that it's running I must say I'm impressed with it. Samsung finally managed a good firmware. I hope they roll this out officially soon, and follow it up with Gingerbread.

Only thing I miss is the ability to use the menu/back keys as a notification light, which the custom kernels added. Samsung should make that an official feature.

Best part of having upgraded to a froyo rom?

My battery life is finally decent. Switching off packet data lets me use about only 20% during a working day, taking and making a few short calls and smsing.

I check doc's xda page every hour....I blame you, farlig!

i decided not to wait for the official release of Froyo and update to the latest 2.2.1 (mostly because for some reason, my battery last half a day now).
is there a step by step instructions on how to do this?

Initially you need to check (tick) the "re-partition' box when applying a PIT but thereafter never again. You should first do the PITting then reboot and apply the PDA, Phone and CSC.

I still need to upgrade to JPU. Last week just was a bit too busy for me, hopefully with the country officially shutting down this week I'd be able to get some me-time in. Did you install an "official" leak of JPU? If so, did you do it through KIES?
