Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

So whats the latest greatest ROM that's out now?

I'm on Darky's v8.0 Gingerbread edition now and itching to flash something new:D

I've been using Doc's Kitchen (based on JS3 - latest and greatest, of course) recently. Flashed a new firmware just this morning... Must say, I absolutely LOVE the Epic lockscreen!

I just want to know, if i flash another ROM, is there a way to go back to the original one?

Hi Wisecrack, http://romkitchen.org/ is the link to Doc's kitchen mentioned above. You choose the CSC / Modem / Kernel plus the Apps and theme you want.

Battery life will depend also depend on Kernel / Modem you choose so that is difficult to say how good it will be for you.

Battery life on my JS3-based ROM is quite good, to be honest. I don't play games on my phone any more, to be honest, so it might help my battery life situation somewhat.

There are warnings all over the XDA guides about flashing when you don't have the 3-button recovery working...
Maybe you could try this:
[HOWTO] [REF] Get Download Mode without 3-button combo using homemade JIG

Thank you Maddmatt! The homemade JIG works! I'll post photos later, but after 15 minutes of work cutting away the plastic moulding of the micro-usb plug, then 5 minutes work to solder a 301k resistor from pin 4 to pin 5, I now have a fully operational JIG.

Plugged it into the phone (power completely off) and after a second or two it starts up in download mode, and now ODIN recognises the phone when I plug in via USB.

I didn't get any further than that last night because we had a storm and a power failure. I did check again this morning, and the jig still works - puts it into download mode.

So what do you think my next step should be?

With the phone stuck in the boot sequence, do I need to re-flash the firmware? Or just the kernel? And do I need to re-partition?

I didn't get a chance to see if I could use adb to reboot in recovery mode. Should I try that option before flashing via ODIN?

D'oh! I missed the USB debugging bit. So, all hope then rests on the homemade JIG?

Yes. I made the same mistake. Had to tear apart some old power supplies at home to get the 300ohm resistors I needed (I thin I used a 120 and a 180ohm resistor in series)
Luckily it did work. Thank the gods for the internet and XDA developers.

So it works even if you never have 3-button working originally?

if the phone is in that flashing S logo bootloop, and you can get into recovery 3e via the 3 button salute, how do you fix it from there???

Homemade JIG

Here are the photos...

The JIG itself:

After inserting the JIG, the phone goes into download mode (by the time I took the pic, I'd already taken out the JIG, and connected via a regular USB to ODIN):

Factory reset. Or use Odin and download mode to flash a new firmware.
And fixing the 3-button issue wouldn't be a bad idea unless you want to use that jig all the time.

does anyone have the stock vodacom 2.1 eclair ROM by any chance? Could come in handy one day!

So the final chapter in my little battery-pulling saga:

- Used the home-made JIG to get the phone into download mode
- Reflashed stock 2.1 ROM using ODIN
- Applied the three-finger salute fix: that's working perfectly now (hopefully no need for JIG in future)
- Rooted
- Installed the Darky v8.1 ROM
- All good.

Big smiles this side.

MTN and their 6-8 week repair policy: pfft...

Thank you to everyone who assisted.

You should really try Doc's latest ROM - it's based on the latest, greatest 2.2.1 firmware (JS3). If memory servers me correctly, Darky is still rocking JPY.

As advised, I installed Doc's JS3 firmware this morning. Very nice. Think I'm going to take a break from flashing firmwares for a while and just get all my apps back and running...

via Odin - if you have it on your pc and want it on your phone.

Or if its on your phone you can try back it up with Rom Manager - but that requires the phone to be rooted!
