Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

The HTC Desire S? Dont you mean HD?

Well, if you can't live without a keybord then go for the Torch - but other than that it has to be between the HTC Desire HD and Samsung Galaxy S. Compare both phones on gsmarena, but in my opinion the DHD is overkill in most of the areas where it beats the SGS - I can't really tell the difference, whereas where the SGS beats the HD is really significant. Super Amoled Screen is still the best IMO and better battery life.

...and it's lighter and fits in your hand more comfortably.

been trying to update for the passed 2 hours but it keeps crashing at different places saying the file downloaded has an erroe or something like that...9% then 23% then 43%....
its driving me insane!

Well I think I completely bricked by phone: I tried to do the 2.2.1. update via Odin (this is the first time I've used it, I used the registry hack for Kies to get my phone to 2.2) but something went wrong when my phone booted up - it said the E drive wasn't accessible and when rebooting it just went black after the logo and stayed black. I should have stopped there because I could still get into recovery and download mode. Instead I tried a few things but nothing worked, I searched for my problem on google and on some forum someone suggested flashing with Odin with just the pit file option ticked (and someone thanked the person so I assumed it would work), but now my phone is completely black. I realised when I turned off the lights that the phone does respond to the power button and charge (although I don't feel the vibrate) with a completely black screen and that's all I get. I've tried everything but all I see is a black screen - no words or logos or anything. Needless to say I can't get into recovery or download mode.
I definitely do not have the skills to make a jig cable and from what I've read that may not help anyway since I did have recovery mode before but now I have nothing. Any other solutions anyone know of? Will Vodacom fix it or have I voided my warranty?

Well i just connected Kies and it says PDAJS5 /PHONEJPY /CSCJS4 (XFM ) is the latest firmware.
I got mine done at a service Center but Kies, Now Acknowledges it as the Latest firmware so the updates are definitely available via kies , before today it said my firmware isn't upgradeable

could you please link to the post that you found on Google that suggested you need to flash with another pit file?

Noooooooo don't let him suffer with that thing! The Desire Z is the best option if he needs a keyboard, in my opinion.

I agree... Besides the blackbery service, blackberry phones are kinda boring....

I followed the instructions from 'The Alchemist' exactly but after flashing with the pit file (I flashed the same pit file he mentioned) my phone went dead, I couldn't get back to recovery mode or anything at all.

I am in exactly the same position, my phone does not react to anything. I even tried the jig, but no go. It is bricked to hades! I may take into vodacare. I did not get the phone through them. I got it through expansys. Perhaps i should send it back to expansys and see what they can do.

You can send it to a samsung specified repair center like samtech in capetown.

Blackberry's are quite functional though, and considering my current predicament I really miss my Blackberry. RIM issued updates pretty quickly and there was never a problem using one from another country (since Voda and MTN are also slow on Blackberry updates) - you could flash any update you liked forward or backward without much worry if something went wrong. As I have now discovered a lot of things can go wrong flashing an Android (unless you're very knowledgeable about these things), in the future I'll wait for official updates only and I'll never go with Samsung again considering how long it's taken them to update to 2.2 let alone 2.3.

My upgrade went without a hitch.

Sorry for all the question. Would just like to know all the things you did before this happened. If you don't mind? Might not be able to fix your own phone, but will give a better idea of where it all went wrong and possibly help others to avoid the mistake.

You said you previously used the reg hack to upgrade to 2.2 could you perhaps remember what versions you phone and pda was after the upgrade? Did you have any lagfix applied when you tried to flash to 2.2.1 Also what version of 2.2.1 did you try to flash with odin when it all started going wrong? Do you perhaps remember the exact error message about the e drive that's not accessible? If you remove the battery for a few minutes, and then put it back in, connect it to your pc with usb cable and try to turn the phone on, does windows make the device connect sound after few seconds?

Sorry for all the questions and understand if you don't want to answer a million questions which might not help you in the end.

Yeah its there... If you update manually without going into a care centre pls let ne know how it went bec ive tried over 10 times but it keeps giving me an error.... At different points of the download...not at the same %....

I did the reghack for the 2.2 beta that was available on Kies in September, I've made no other changes - never rooted, no lagfix (could not rooting have been the cause?). I was on some verison of XXJP before and I was updating to XXJPY as this seemed the closest to the one MTN and Vodacom are using. According to everything on XDA you're supposed to flash a CSC too, so I downloaded the collection of CSC files and chose XXJP7 since this seemed the closest. Sorry, don't remember the exact error message but google seemed to indicate that if you flash the wrong CSC then this might happen.
Windows does not recognise the phone at all, tried what you said, tried a dozen other suggestions online (combinations of recovery mode, pressing both volume buttons, battery in/out, cable in/out between these steps - no indication from the phone or windows that the phone is alive.
In trying to enter recovery mode in absolute darkness I can see that the phone turns on with a black screen that flashes on and off if I keep my fingers on the button, similarly it responds with this absolute black screen if I turn it on or put the charger in (and the phone gets warm after some time with the charger in), however no vibration or anything else, just black screen, it goes off if I take the battery out.

Don't know if you tried it, but might be worth a shot if nothing else worked but looks like the "hair dryer" method worked for some people. Don't know if you in JHB or the South - Coast now, but if you are on the coast, I can quickly look tomorrow if i am able to find the resistors and will then make a Jig just to test if that may work, there might be a finger or 2 attached to the jig as my soldering skills is nothing to write home about. But then you at least know you tried that and not wonder if it might work.

Clickme were you able to upload the rom?
