Oil Rig Request

I'll speak to a mate of mine.

Worked on an oilrig in Angola. Will see if he has contact information for you.

Well, I got some out of date info for you. I worked on the rigs in the North Sea 20 years ago. I went to Aberdeen, Scotland, the city from where the UK sector rigs are serviced. Hung around in pubs where all the guys on leave drink. Made some contacts and got a job. In those days lots of Aussies, Kiwis and a few Safricans were there. I think sitting around here hoping to get hired is too passive an approach. Go where the workers hang out when offshore. But then again, its not the boom times anymore.

Hi there Gdiza,

I haven't been on the forums much with all the holidays and eating and gaming etc.

Firstly websites:

www.worldwideworker.com

www.rigzone.com

Company:

www.kcadeutag.com (I know you can upload your CV onto their site)

www.chevron.com (Off the top of my head)

Google: BP, Engen, Halliburton, Schlumberger, Anadrill, Weatherford. Terms to google with: Oil and Gas, Drilling, Exploration.

What experience / qualifications does he possess (mechanic? fitter and turner?)

Note: Currently the industry is not doing all that well due to global recession.

I'll PM you my email addy and you can send a CV or at least more details on his qualifications / experience.

Hope this helps

Regards,
J

Finish your FA studies and you could also work on one. The money is VERY VERY VERY good.

However:

You work 12 hours a day 7 days a week and work for 4 weeks then you are off 4 weeks. No job for sussies for sure :)

No contacts, but I wonder if it’s wise to put store in fossil fuels? The days of ‘big bux’ are over – everyone is going ‘green’ or seeking oil independence. The oil-rich gulf states look like they may disappear into sand dunes and revive goat herding. Be wary.

The Gulf States are not the only countries with oil. In fact I actually agree with you on perhaps being wary on working in the middle east for now. Look to places like South America, Asia, Africa for Oil and Gas Employment.

IMO oil will be around for many years to come. Longer than I will be around anyways.

If it’s around for too long, maybe we [humanity] will join you in not being around.

/sigh, lets be rude, sarcastic, extremist etc.

The reason I stated that oil will be around for ages to come, is that we do not only use oil as a source of fuel (plastics, lubricants, asphalt come to mind).

Was anyone successful with employment in the oil and gas industry?!

Why would someone want to work on an oil rig?

I have 2 friends that do offshore work. They spend about 4 months away and then 1 or 2 months at home. They have permanently jobs. If you ask them why they'll do it they'll say it for the cash but I can see that there is also an element of getting away from the chaos of home that's a big plus. When they are home they are essentially on holiday and can take kids to school, do sport type stuff during the day and be fun-guy-dad. The affords the above average lifestyle they have (house, cars, big TV's, holidays overseas etc). When they are away they miss home but can focus on work. I'm certain this isn't my kind of lifestyle but for them it works great. The one chap has been doing it for more than 10 years. They are both engineers so maybe paid more than the average rigger (not sure).
