Got the SMS, but didn't reply until I get more info. Don't want to be spammed until I go blue in the face.

The problem here, is that it costs R1.50 every time you SMS an answer to a question.

So the more you spend, the greater your chances. Don't like this COMPETITION at all.

The competition period will run from 00:00:00 on 27 August 2012 to 23:59:59 on 18 November 2012 ("the competition period").

The prizes that can be won are 72 x R5,000 daily prizes; 11 x R50,000 weekly prizes; and 1 x R500,000 grand prize.

To participate in the competition, you must register by sending an SMS with the keyword "WIN" to the number 14700.

This registration SMS is free of charge.

You will then receive trivia questions. Each question has two (2) possible answers: one answer is correct and the other incorrect.

Participants answer the question by sending an SMS with their answer (number 1 or 2) to the number 14707.

All SMSs are charged at R1.50 per SMS.

For each SMS sent to the number 14707 the Participant receives points, which accumulate during the competition.

The Participant will receive 20 points for each correct answer and 10 points for each incorrect answer.

The draws for the weekly and monthly prizes will take place every Monday and the draw for the grand prize will take place on 19 November 2012.

Winners will be notifi ed telephonically. "Every entry SMS costs R1.50"

That where they will make all the money for the competition, because everyday u got to sms and it costs R1.50, Imagine how many ppl would sms for the competition daily?

Me too, I think it's crap.

I played today, answered 2 questions so far. Every time you reply they send you another question and a little "motivation" so you'll continue playing till your pockets are empty. Kinda reminds me of the Vodacom fiasco, remember the 100 BMW's Vodacom promo? This one is gonna follow on Vodacom's footsteps I reckon.

True, this is an insult to the poor. The more you spend the better your changes of winning.
So the richer you are, the richer you become.
"The more points you earn the more chances you have to win."
They could've done it like a lottery. Enter once, and you're in the draw.

So how then it differs from lotto? And Lotto is approved "enrichment mechanism for poor" by the ruling party.

Because here they encourage you to spend/SMS more "The more points you earn the more chances you have to win."

I see your point, but I think it differs a bit from the Lotto.

If you buy one lotto ticket, you get a chance to win. If you send one SMS, you have zero chance of winning.

OK, so you basically say it is a scam. I can't argue on that, I don't know...

I spent like more than R100 on this already...... I demand prizes in return.... lol anyways yes those messages encourage me to spend more and more sigh.

This fiasco of a competition is making me lose respect for Cell C. This is more of a VAS trick than a service provider promotion. Have answered a few and the questions keep coming. Even when you don't answer they send more and more questions. To me it is a rip off. Not a fan of Vodacom, but atleast the entries into their Vodacom millionaires competition is/was free. As one of the previous posts pointed out one could spend 100s of Rands with nothing to show. I think that this probably does not comply with NCA as is does not clearly state how much this costs (the only way I found out was looking in the fine print terms and conditions on their website).

Exactly what I think, I haven't played since Saturday yet they still send me more questions and not to mention their "encouraging" messages. A total rip off! :(

Hi

If you dont want to play you can sms "stop" 14700.
There are daily prizes and a grand prize, but it up to you whether you want to play or not.

I have been playing for the last few days... spent a lot of money. Problem I have is unlike the other SMS competitions Cell C had in the past or the daily SMS competition that is still rrunning, you do not get notified if there was a winner or not.

As far as I am aware this kind of "Competition" is dodgy at best and illegal at worst. The moment you have to pay for a chance to win, it is no longer a promotion, it is gambling, or an unlawful lottery. This is illegal as far as I know. My sms service provider wasp forwarded me this that was sent out to wasps.

Please can someone take them to task for this ? Maybe someone report them to the National Lottery Board ?

I played a few questions and was easy to google :D.

Okay on to a more serious question, CellC REP you fail to mention that if you SMS "stop" after entering 1-100x whether you are still eligible to win for that particular day/week's draw. I don't mind if i say enter 6x and SMS "stop" (free to enter and stop) but am I still eligible to win? If it cancels out all entries then you are not being nice :p to all the players.

Don't think you guys/girls thought out the process very well.

I'd like to know how the winner is selected. Just say there is a spreadsheet full of entrants (say 100 names for ease of reference,) is there some randomiser which would pick out a person in that list? Therefore, the more points you have will populate the list more??
