Many of us I'm sure have made a joke or two about what we'll be like when we're old. Cranky and horny old goats :D I know I have.

However this morning my world got shaken a little after a business visit to a local old age home. What caught my attention was the many old people sitting on their own all over the place. One woman, maybe 85 yrs old, sat in a wheelchair by herself starring out a window. Others sat in the "sun room" just gazing into the distance.

It made me wonder. What's going through their minds in times like that? Are they going back in time with memories of the hay days when the body was young and life was great? Or perhaps they're thinking about the children who don't visit anymore. Anyway I think it's a sad thing being very old [and alone] and the sight of these seniors this morning made the rest of my day a very ****ty experience.

Next time go talk to them, spend 5 minutes, brighten their day, and you will feel a lot better.

Actually I did that. Had a chat with a madam who lived in the Karoo, Laingsburg, to be precise.

Very touching. Yes, like every human heart, no matter how old or young. Is there anything more crushing than to be abandoned, ignored, discarded? Considered useless and a burden to everyone? Talk to the toppies, as Sinbad says.

We all going to get there some day if we dont die first . :D
Had the same thought today - we're all going to end up old and useless providing fate keeps death away up to that point. Right now you have control, but there will come a time when control has been taken from you. Bloody scary thought ;)

And simple things like govt tv albeit crap become majorly important. By simply not being able to watch TV and 18:00 means the world to some of the occupants.

I feel for you Replay. I too recently had an eye opening heart tugging experience.

Oh you're planning on skipping that phase or rather the useless feeling part in that phase :D
As a sign of goodwill please pass on the contact details of your dealers, might not be such a bad idea to become a junkie at 80 ;)

How true is that and we never give it a thought, not because we choose not to but it just does not cross the mind.
On that topic we get old age homes and old age homes. The fancy, larney ones many cannot afford and the lower cost, government owned old age homes - moese big difference as well. Plus there's always the horific stories of staff abusing the elderly and stealing from them. Doesn't that just make you boil inside?

I enjoy siting with old people and listening to their stories. Arb stories, don't know them from a bar of soap, can be interesting. With family you've heard all their stories before.

Can one just like pitch up at an old age home and offer to just sit and talk to those people ?

At times I think 60 would be a good time to shuffle off this mortal coil.
