BEIJING (AP) - Another example has emerged of China's desire for a perfect Summer Games with word that a song sung at the opening ceremony was lip-synched.

A ceremony official says the 7-year-old Chinese singer was not good-looking enough for the ceremony. So a another little girl with a pixie smile was used as a lip-synching stand-in.

The ceremony's music director tells Beijing Radio it was "in the national interest."

The news follows reports that some footage of the fireworks exploding across China's capital during the ceremony was digitally inserted.

The girl who actually sang, but didn't appear, says just having her voice used for the opening ceremony was still an honor.

Whether the move was unethical, or unfair to both girls, has become a hot topic and is racing across the Chinese blogosphere.

Pff... That's mean. After all, we let Paris Hilton on TV.

Impressed by the Footprint fireworks?

Faked!

Olympic Fireworks Faked For TV

The global television audience of more than three billion people watched in amazement as a series of giant footprints outlined in fireworks proceeded through the night sky from Tiananmen Square to the Bird's Nest stadium - except they were watching a computer animation.

Even the giant television screens within the stadium itself broadcast the fake images.

Stunned viewers thought they were watching the string of fireworks filmed from above by a helicopter.

But in reality they were watching a 3D graphics sequence that took almost a year to produce.

It even included a 'camera shake' to mimic the effect of filming from a helicopter.

The dupe was revealed by China's Beijing Times. Speaking to the paper, the man responsible for the animation said he was pleased with the result.

"Seeing how it worked out, it was still a bit too bright compared to the actual fireworks," Gao Xiaolong told the newspaper.

"But most of the audience thought it was filmed live - so that was mission accomplished."

The designers even added some haziness to simulate the polluted Beijing skyline.

Broadcasters around the world had no choice but to show the footage because it all came from one feed provided by Beijing Olympic Broadcasting - the organisation responsible for filming the games.

The ceremony has also been strongly criticised by architect Ai Weiwei, who helped design the Bird's Nest stadium.

Writing on his blog, Mr Ai described the ceremony as "a recycling of the rubbish of fake classical culture tradition; a sacrilegious visual garbage dump and an insult to the spirit of liberty; low class sound play that's just noise pollution".

He was directly critical of China's ruling communist party, characterising the ceremony as "a showcase of the reincarnation of the Marxist imperialism; the ultimate paragon of an all embracing culture of fascist totalitarianism; an encyclopaedia that encompasses total defeat in intellectual spirit."

Mr Ai helped design the stadium alongside Swiss architect firm, Herzog and de Meuron.

But since then, he has become an outspoken blogger against the Olympics and the Chinese regime. Unusually, he has not been censored by the authorities.

So what, at least *someone* sang for real. It's not like lip-syncing hasn't been done before...

Personally, I found it silly that they would switch one kid with another because the talented kid is only good for her voice. It's an unfair world though, right? :p

Well they chose a particular kid to play Harry Potter. They chose
the one kid for her looks and the other kid for her voice, then
joined then two. The kid shown was more fair skinned and
in Asia that is a trait of beauty. The kid who sang according to
the CNN pic didn't look any worse imho but this is a Central
Committee run affair....

Also had an APC outside the press office and 21 points regarding
censorship despite the IOC saying there would be none.... so much for that.

No ways. Thats sad.

I remember looking at the footsteps and being mightily impressed...but I couldn't figure out how they made them all point in the right direction. 2 Teas later I still couldn't work it out...now it makes sense:(

I feel more cheated with the fireworks thing than the singing for some reason. Just look at Auto-tune...happens all the time that the mess with the voices to such a degree that you can't recognize it anymore.

At the end it's all show business. Life's not fair. Look at China and US
taking all the medals, arguably they have some good athletes, but
the economic outlay per athlete is much higher than other countries,
so you have for example Indian with one Gold and China with a dozen.

Is that fair? Honestly, I don't think so. The athletes performing
in the Olympics were originally amateurs. Now the money pumped
into these people is huge and while individually these people
give a lot, they do have major advantages that other people
from poorer countries don't - those can make the difference between
a win and a loss, as these wins are usually by tiny photographic
margins.

If you scrutinise anything wonderful, it just becomes dull and the magic is lost.

At the end it's all show business.
Ja I know...but one still feels cheated. They must have know that it would come out...and they are spending billions anyway...so why not do a legit show & avoid the embarrassment.

For visual effects I'll go watch Star wars.

does the world really care about this? but maybe i am not one to talk given that i have a general disdain for opening (and closing) ceremonies for events.

Yes the world does, just like they care about who happens to be banging britney spears or whoever else.

The world "cares" because its big bad china who's not playing nice about Tibet. The world forgets that miming/lip-syncing is the rule rather than the exception for our hundreds of mindless "packaged" singers/bangs, and more than a few of the more respected names too.

I spent the better part of my adult life working in the professional music industry. I've met and worked with a great deal of big international names. Guess what? Many of them mime. Why? Because they can't frigging sing to start with. They record a CD in one afternoon, and the sound engineers spend the next several months manipulating pitch to make it bearable to listen to. One prominent singer (known for his wonderful voice) hires a whole symphony orchestra, and then tell them to not make a sound, because they have the whole concert pre-recorded. And people pay to see this...

Oh, and don't forget that many of them are butt ugly to start with and rely on cosmetic surgery and layers of make-up (men too) to have that perfect look for the cameras.

At least the Chinese had one girl who's genuinely good looking, and one girl who can really sing.

And now the problem is ... not enough people, can you believe it.

Beijing is all dressed up, but no one is going

Officials acknowledge they're struggling to fill venues

BEIJING, Aug. 12 — Chinese Olympic organizers acknowledged Tuesday they were struggling to handle an unforeseen and baffling problem inside Summer Games venues and at the showpiece Olympic Park.

Not enough people.

I see no problem with this. the kid that sang was fat, they didn't want a fat person up there. So they replaced the fat kid with an unfat kid. Big deal... who wants to see a fat kid sing anyways. I love the way the chinese dont care and arent bothered with being "PC".

The pic that CNN showed was not a fat kid. She was darker skinned though.
Anyway kids are kids, they all look the same. However let the socialists
at least see that socialist systems are not humanism ('ugly' child gets
belittled) but about pushing the idealogy of the Central Committee.
