Olympic Opening Lip-Synch

If you can't do it live, then get off the stage.

We already have computers that can make me sound like a girl and hit the notes I want with perfection. But perfection is dull and has no place in REAL art.

However let the socialists
at least see that socialist systems are not humanism ('ugly' child gets
belittled) but about pushing the idealogy of the Central Committee.

Uhm, 'ugly' child gets belittled by his/her peers long before they learn about political/social systems. It's got nothing to do with socialism (and no, I'm not defending or condoning it).

In this case the child wasn't ugly, just that she wasn't pretty enough.
So I doubt children would mock her, but no sane adult would,
now the whole establishment did something pretty nasty
Secondly this is not about children, its about the philosphy of
the people in charge. They have a child on stage, a symbol
of innocence and purity, and in socialist states children
are very 'revered' (in the propaganda that is), then they
substitute her for a 'prettier' child. The meaning is lost,
as even a maimed crippled child would represent something
more than an ideally looking one. Secondly, the Olympics
are not a beauty pageant.

Marx would be proud.

Brings back a time, 1932-1945.

It's not a political party convention either.

I guess Marx is proud of all those youthly pop singers miming away for the screaming masses too?

I'll remind you to quit complaining next time the ANC puts a political spin on some trivial issue.

I think my points went over your head and you're lost.
I could explain it all to you but anyone with a knowledge
of history and some good Googling regarding George
Watson will realise how I've tied this thing. Oh I've
also lived under a socialist Soviet controlled
puppet state - hence I've seen kids in May-Day parades
and how the 'perferct youth' will fight for the future worker
etc etc.... sadly you can only read about this
in history books.

Anyway you're in the UK, go to a library and find
some books by Literary Historian (from Cambridge)
called George Watson :).

Ah yes, I have his Lost Literature of Socialism - always a useful source at dinner table arguments with collectivists.

So you see socialism in action. You could say the actual singing girl
was not 'Aryan' enough. :) Of course it's more than just
the display of the face of the nation, its the whole ideology
which allows this in this and various other pervasive forms.

Indeed. Though a trivial example compared to the real horrors of mass-repression, it's emblematic socialism's profound anti-humanity. But we digress.

Ed Stroligo's comments over at overclockers.com were quite good, I thought.

I think this trivial example brings the IDEOLOGY across and puts it there in front
of the whole world. They even had me suckered for a moment. You know repression
is one thing but you need an ideology behind it. Current repression is not
as bad as it was in the 60's.

Thanks for link.

I think that it is awful that they did this to the little girl, she is going to have a complex for the rest of her life!!

@PeterCH, I don't deny history or pretend to know too much about it. But no, you comments were not over my head. I just don't agree with you.

They did nothing that we don't do in the west. In fact, if anything, they were following the example we set. Your assessment that their decisions was somehow determined by socialist/marxist thinking is akin to crying racism every time a white person has something negative to say about a black person, regardless weather what was said had anything to do with race at all.

This was an entertainment event. Something I know lots about, since I spent most of my adult life being involved in entertainment events. No corner is too big to cut to give the desired appearance. I've seen more people mime that sing for real. Those decisions, regardless of who took them, are no different from decisions taken at any other big televised event you care to mention. Even if they had the other girl on stage, she would still have been miming. Why? Because the risk of a 9 year old freezing up on the big moment, in front of tens of thousands of people, is way too big. This is not unique, they did what everybody else does.

If you want to say that they did it because of their socialist thinking, then you have to apply the same logic to performers in the west who do the same thing. So if I told you that Pavarotti, Freddy Mercury and Josh Groban lip-synced because of some political or social ideology, that should be a fair comment?

This whole thing is a storm in a teacup. Just get over it.

China is busy trying to change slowly - the fact that they are trying should be lauded. We know first hand that overnight changes in political ideologies do not work too well - and that was not for 1.3 billion people.

The lip syncing was done for a valid reason in their culture - losing face is the most important thing for Chinese people - just like the 日本鬼子 - Riben Guizi (Japanese). I am amazed that it got out tho, that AND the fireworks thing.

Do not try and relate the Chinese mentality to the American model. They have 5000 years more development than America and will do things their way whether W and Condeeeeleeezzzeeerrr Rice (the Biatch) like it or not.

There are, after all, quite a few of them to change and they have a long history. It took Europe up 'till late in the last century to stop killing each other (some still want to) and from where i sit the Chinese are more united and structured than Europe right now - they are, after all, a coalition of states and 56 ethnic groups. (Tibet are separatists like any other).

Think these things are being given more attention than they deserve because for some reason everyone wanted the games to fail, now that they have been the biggest success in history, there will be loads of negative press about Beijing, the Chinese and their culture. (the same mentality seems to prevail among certain people in this country about the 2010 FOOTBALL world cup (it is FIFA, not SIFA)).

They are also the next superpower.

Aside:
Did y'all not think that Bush made a complete tw@t of himself at the meet and greet thing for the heads of state in Beijing before the dinner - especially when he was trying to compete with Putin for President HU's attention when they were going up the stairs and waiting to be seated?

Missed that one - is there a video link somewhere?
