Guys,

I'm looking for on-site (my home) tech help with a problem (probably software) I cannot seem to fix.

What sort of companies are there (that will send out techies) that will provide desent assistance? I'm thinking of dial-a-nerd, etc. Are they any good? I am in the Johannesburg/Fourways area.

Thanks

ps. My problem is related to internet connectivity; I had spyware which messed up my reg files and caused me to loose internet connectivity, I subsequently formatted my harddisk, installed antivirus, did all the updates, but after an hour lost internet connection again. Problem is not with ISP or Telkom (i think)

why not ask the guys here to help you, it's free.

OT : dail a nerd?

Anyway, post your pc details, OS , what internet connectivity / hardware etc

I have already used another on-line forum helpsite, and could not resolve it. Quite frankly I'm getting tired of trying to play techie - its not my forté, rather just pay someone and get it over with.

ps. my forte is using a pc with no problems for online gaming :D

Connect any other desktop or laptop to the ADSL router and see if the internet works? That way you will know if the router or computer is to blame. Also try another router to narrow down the options.

The most likely culprit is the network card or cable.

Hope you have a decent virus scanner like AVG 8.0 Free.

Problem solving 101...

I can connect wirelessly thru my laptop so problem must be with my desktop.

Specs (after formatting disk):
Software: Win XP home, SP3 and all other critical updates, IE7, Norton 360
Hardware: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz CPU; 2x1GB DDR2 667 Mhz; Intel 965 Lamont MB; 256MB GeForce 7900GT PCI X16 V; Soundblaster ExtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro; BELKIN DESKOP NIC (F5D500Y)
Modem: Telkom Mega 105 WR

Telkom Mega 105 with Service pack 3!!!!!

Check your DNS settings:
Start -> Run -> cmd -> ipconfig /all
OR
Right click your connection -> Status -> Details (I think).

You should have DNS settings in place. If you are using DHCP to automatically assign IP addresses (the default), then your router should be providing these settings. For some reason, SP3 + Telkom routers = DNS issues.

Solution: Input your DNS settings yourself:
1.1) Right click your connection -> Properties -> Highlight TCP/IP -> Properties -> Specify DNS settings.
1.2) Make the DNS settings 10.0.0.2 (Don't worry about the alternative configuration.

Instead of 10.0.0.2, you could also use the DNS settings provided by your service provider (they should have at least two).

Edit: another way to check would be to ping both www.google.co.za and 72.14.205.103:

2.1) Start -> Run -> ping -t www.google.co.za
2.2) Check if pings go through (probably not).
2.3) Close window.
3.1) Start -> Run -> ping -t 72.14.205.103
3.2) Check if pings go through (if they do, then DNS is most likely the issue).
3.3) Follow Instructions (1) above

And when you say lost internet connectivity what is happening, can you still ping the router?

Great !! I know that its set on DHCP to automatically assign IP addresses.

Not at my desktop now, but will input DNS settings myself later. Thanks :)

Pretty much exactly what I would've recommended if I were online, nice one :)

You guys are brilliant, it worked!!!

I hate myself for not coming here earlier, had to go thru a disk format and drivers/update install the whole of sunday.:o

Just one last check: if I go Start -> Run -> cmd -> ipconfig /all ...I get:

-----------
Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : warriorpc
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethe
-----------

Is that IP routing and wins proxy supposed to be disabled? I can go to any webpage, except my default homepage which I set to "www.businessday.co.za", when I changed it to www.myadsl.co.za then no problem.

Dont understand why i cannot visit www.businessday website?

It may not be you: I'm unable to get to their site either - straight or via GOOG jump, I suspect the site is down.

aahhh...relief.

Which means everthing is working fine. Thanks again all! (saved me R1500 for dial-a-nerd)

www.businessday.co.za works for me.

Don't think it matters if those are disabled. It could be something on your service provider's side.
Try http://196.44.3.67

Glad you're back online though
