OnePlus 8 series

Super fast wireless charging and ip rating too.. Price is nuts though. Agreed.
So disappointed.

Will look at Oppo for an alternative when I need to upgrade... And that punch hole!!

WTF were they thinking? Are they going back in time? The tear drop was far less offensive. It's 2020 ffs, not 2017...

Samsung's S20 offers a far superior camera for almost the same price.

Goodbye OnePlus.

I'm fairly impressed with it TBH! Screen is something of a beast by looks of all the 'records' it's broken.

Glacial green is stunning as is the Black Oynx is it??

5G and WIFI 6 suggests it's appropriately future proofed and super quick.

Ram upgrades, CPU upgrades, UFS 3.0, USB 3.1, incremental improvements over the out going models in terms of ram and cpu.

Camera remains to be seen. I think OP might have nailed the camera this time round... finally... we will have to wait for reviews plus DxoMark scores.... Youtuber reviews also helpful and the one I've seen so far rates it favourably against Ultra and 11 Pro...

The IP68 and wireless charging brigade will finally shut up but that comes at a cost. As does the 865 chip bundled with the 5G router. That's pushed the manufacturing costs up significantly. Bigger battery is handy.

Look, it's improved on every measurable metric, as one would expect, plus added 2 key 'features' customers have been harassing them for. Price jump is not insignificant though.

I'm currently not in a position to drop $1000 on a smart phone so either way makes no difference to me. I think it might be a stretch for a lot of Oneplus users who are used to spending around the $700 mark.

As for taking a Samsung over OP, I personally don't enjoy Samsung, from an ethical perspective and from a bloatware perspective. Oygen OS is still worth the price of admission for me....

I really like the wireless buds that can get 10 hours out of a 10 minute charge. I've never seen them sold in SA though!!

The OnePlus 7 had UFS3.0.

Not much more to offer but a much bigger price tag.

Also the OnePlus series was always water resistant just without the IP68 rating.

You're paying a whole lot more for the same things.

If I'm going to pay Samsung prices, I'd rather have the superior Samsung or iPhone camera.

Yes, UFS 3.0 has been around for a while but I was more eluding to the combination of Ram, CPU, UFS 3.0, USB 3.1, 5G, WIFI 6 being both future proof and super speedy...

S20 Ultra is a quite a bit more than $1k isn't it? I thought it was around $1400?

Anyway, looking forward to the spec and performance shootouts. There already quite a few posted online...

Why are you comparing it to the S20 ultra? The normal S20 would be the direct comparison.

OnePlus does not have an "ultra" varient.

And if you want to start talking about $1500 phones, then you've lost the plot.... Just like OnePlus...

While the market competition may be fierce, and new phones being churned out every year, just give it time.

The phone's price should eventually drop, and as for the price, in USD<->ZAR exchange rate is absurd.

I bought my OP6 as soon as the OP7 series was released in the market. Got it on a special.
Think 419 USD back in 2019, ZAR 6-7k-ish.

So, the price might drop or not, but OxygenOS is far more bloat free and faster than Samsung's Android build.

Since I was a lad that got his first Android phone, I played around with custom ROMs, primarily with CM/LineageOS.
From my perspective, OxyOS was/is the best Android build as close to the bone stock Android.

Simply put: price will drop, and I love bone stock Android.
That's why I bought a OnePlus device.

Might have a look at Oppo as well...

Lol, not me comparing it to anything other than the models it replaces. These aren't my reviews... :giggle: Pro is the top end of the Oneplus range, Ultra the top end of the Samsung range... and that's the point, $400 cheaper but comparable specs and performance..

Still playing catch up in the camera department but optics usually improve with software updates...

Apparently it was necessary to nail their IP rating... engineering challenge they couldn't overcome...

More like a decision Oppo made that they had no control over, because they essentially resell Oppo phones with minor changes to the rear design and with their own software. The previous phones already had outstanding waterproofing.

Exactly. They did this without official ratings, and their phones were fine.

When OnePlus starts to etch into Samsung premium territory, Samsung's superior camera technology will always win.

You can't beat the billions of US dollars of research development that Samsung spend every year on camera technology to OnePlus's mediocre Budget.

The only thing OnePlus has now is it's software experience going for them. And that's not a big lead these days either.

This is the end of OnePlus.

Just like the end of HTC and LG.

The move to the horrid 2017 punch hole alone, (excluding the obsurd* price) is the final nail in the coffin for me.

Why do you keep going on about "horrid 2017 punch hole"? The first phones with punch hole cameras were announced in Dec 2018 and only released in 2019...

*it's "absurd".
