Online piracy

Then there is that Rupert Murdoch guy who thinks that you should pay for your news on-line, just as you do for your newspaper because the internet model in its current form just isn't making enough money.

Who do you think I was referring to when I said "some still want to cling on to an archaic method"? :D

Still, all of this is admittedly theoretical and I don't think there's much proof either way. I doubt that piracy will ever gain that much weight to tip the scales into anarchy since you will always have people who will want to do the right thing as it is judged by them; however, as the battle heats up, you can expect that the industry will simply pass the costs of their losses on to their legitimate, paying customers and there are no doubt going to be a whole bunch of people in the middle with slightly more negotiable morals who will slip over to the dark side of the scale.

Well hopefully the Music and Movie industries will catch a wake up before then and get with the times. They will have to or they will die out. Others will step in to take up the shortfall. Adapt or die.

The guy who opens a new shop doesn't build it on the far side of town and expect all his customers to come to him. No he goes where his customers are and he sets his prices according to what they are willing to pay. Economics 101. ;)

And until those damn distributors wake up to my way of thinking, I am free to rape and pillage to my hearts content. They are asking for it afterall. I am a crusader, and it is my mission in life to point out their wrongs.

Viva!

I suppose that's the heart of the argument, really. You are saying that if you can't afford it, or don't want to pay the asking price for it, you have no right to use it. The other side reckons that if you can't afford it, or don't want to pay the asking price for it, but you can get hold of it, you have the option of getting it for free, so you can choose to do so. The debate on whether it is right or wrong suddenly doesn't matter. If you believe it is wrong, there are any of a number of ways that you can justify it to make yourself feel better about it or defy those who frown on your behaviour, or you can just not care. Again, your choice.

I'm a firm believer that there can be no action without consequence though. I'm just not clever enough or prescient enough to tell you what they are definitely going to be in this case.

Dude, seriously. I think you should go and have a long chat with your therapist. This is clearly getting to you. rape? seriously?

Figure of speech :)

But typical of you to focus on the one thing in my sentence that you can argue, as opposed to the concept I was highlighting...
Thanks for being predictable.

no, seriously? You liken downloading to rape? Did something happen to you as a child or are you a struggling artist who's wife was raped by a chronic downloader?

Again, it is a figure of speech.
Can you like to english?

As soon as he doesn't have a valid argument and his repertoire of catch phrases like adapt or die or the ever popular MAFIAA starts wearing thin he starts acting like a child. Personal insults to follow soon.

There are non as blind as those who do not want to see. That phrase has never seemed as true as it does in this thread.

Figure of speech or not.

Downloading IS rape = a metaphor
Downloading IS LIKE rape = a simile

Which is it? They both sound like you are putting rape and downloading on the same level.

Yay, the cavalry rides in on their little stuffed horse! :D

Did your buddy phone you and beg for your help in fighting the big bad internet troll?

and I think you mean "There are none as blind" seeing as we have now moved on to English lessons. ;)

It is neither. It is a figure of speech.
You have decided to interpret what I said incorrectly, as it is the only thing you have left.
As I said earlier, your argument is thin, so what you are attempting now is deflection.
Again.

Your predictability makes this so much easier. Yet again, you argue everything but the facts.

Ahahahaha! Metaphors and Similes ARE figures of speech!!!

And you were thinking of giving me an English Lesson???

They are the only two possible figures of speech for the way you phrased the rape scenario.

Please inform which figure of speech you were using?

Here is a list if you need it...

Ahahahaha! Metaphors and Similes ARE figures of speech!!!

Not that I really want to get involved in the insanity that this seems to have devolved into but I feel I need to interject here.

Isn't the very idea of a figure of speech that it's meaning is not based on the literal meanings of the words it consists of and instead uses devices such as personification, metaphors or similes?

It is figurative by nature... hence... figure of speech?

Could be wrong... I am not an English guru.

EDIT: wow we got off topic over the weekend.

Wait, wait! I think I can actually wring a half-decent analogy out of this one!!

Remember the Vikings? You know, built ships and 'raped and pillaged' all along the North Sea coastline? In their minds, they were just sharing their beloved culture with all of the people along the coastlines. They did nothing wrong at all except fulfil their gods-given mandate. But on the other hand, all of those people who lived along the coast felt that what the Vikings were doing was wrong!

So, pirates are 'raping and pillaging' digital media without fear or conscience, because no-one can stop them and it's their gods-given right to do whatever they want. Now, if only those cry-baby corporations who live along the torrent ocean coastline would stop whining.

Haha! See???? I did it!

Funny how the person at the wrong end of the argument was the only one to interpret it incorrectly.

Let me rephrase for the children:

And until those damn distributors wake up to my way of thinking, I will continue to illegally acquire that which does not belong to me, because I, the faceless internet crusader, am above the law.

Dammit. I hate it when my clever post ends up at the bottom of the previous page. Who'll see it and appreciate it now??

There are many types of figures of speech (look at the list I gave), but one major feature is that they all involve some form of comparison between the figure and the target. In this case sin_x claims he was using a figure of speech to compare rape to piracy.

Nice analogy. +1 000 000 for including Vikings... they are awesome and therefore this analogy is awesome by association.

Your analogy assumes that the people did not enjoy having their homes set on fire and that the women didn't enjoy being raped by men of up to 4 different Viking clans a week. Also maybe they were asking for it lol :p :D

Perhaps they enjoyed it... we will never know short of interviewing them.

EDIT: Also does anyone else get the feeling that the amount of rape analogies in this thread demonstrates an unhealthy obsession?

so you also think that downloading is on a par with rape?
