Online piracy

Should Hollywood SUE Criterion because I buy their stuff instead of the garbage they churn out? Yep - going with your logic, they should - after all everything which competes with their garbage is leading to their profit losses.\

This not about competition. This is about you, copying something you didn't pay for whether it was hollywood, bollywood, or benoni.

You are a shill because 1. I don't have a self entitlement attitude - that's YOU projecting YOUR own feelings. 2. I don't download MPAA/RISA/etc junk.

Maybe we argue when you find out what a "shill" is.

...the industry will say because I don't buy their junk - I am pirating it. That's how the people you defend think. They believe that people who have no intention to buy their junk would have bought it and instead of blaming the poor quality of their stuff (and the high price) they blame a few internet file sharers. Oh and if they could just, they'd shut down every indie and non-Hollywood competitor too or expect a tax to bail them out. Think about this.

What?
"The industry". How ominous. Do they have a secret handshake?
I am not defending anybody.
I am giving an opinion that differs from yours.
One day, when you are past your rebellious teeny years, you will realise that you are not always right.

LOL, arguing with kids... come back when you've passed high school.

Are you a time-traveller from the past?

Media co's should be happy with the success they have. They make huge amounts of $$$ as is. If some kids DL music they can't afford without taking it from everyone else, it's not anyone's loss. They had no intention or money in the first place. I have no intention either - already pay $$$ for DSTV which goes to Hollywood and hardly watch it - but I don't dl their junk. I don't mind that others do - and I don't think that if all those people bought this rubbish, we'd have better entertainment, or it would be cheaper - the execs would follow the same formulas and reward themselves with more mansions in St Tropez and yachts in the Bahamas. Sorry - greed, is greed.

Oh, now I get it. You are just pissed cos someone else made more money than you.
Shame

But hey, congratulations anyway. You have managed to convince yourself that you are right.

You are the online version of Julius Malema.

Lets nationalise "the industry", and give 51% back to the pirate people. That'll teach 'em.

There goes the no-one loses argument again. Let's forget for a second that they lose potential revenue and the right to have control over their own IP. 2 questions for clarity, 1) If they give the downloaded material to their friends does anybody lose? 2) Would you pirate watch DSTV?

I used to go to a library and photocopy textbooks, encyclopedias, reference books etc when i had an assignment to do. damn straight I was "raping and pillaging" the **** outta those books....

Did those books cost a lot? Yes, I couldn't afford them.
Did I copy more than I needed? Yip, but I feel good coz i recycled everything after.

I kinda blame the library though... they put the photocopying machine like right next to the books, talk about temptation...

Is it ok to pirate DSTV? I guess according to multichoice its ok if you use a PVR, but don't DARE use a 3rd party dvd recorder. AND don't dare put your tv on if you have guests as you don't have a license that allows public viewing.

I think some people only see 2 extremes - buy everything, or download everything. Sometimes I will cross a solid white line on the road, sometimes I speed, but do I feel the need to break all the rules of the road all the time? No.

Many people DO listen to a downloaded song and then buy the album. Many people DO buy a boxset of a season they've already watched when they downloaded. Does it make downloading stuff right? Just as right as the time you time you went in the emergency lane to get off the highway when it was backed up to hell.

haha, I see the crusaders are at it still. Do you guys get paid a commission for defending the IP of your respective companies, or are you just doing this out of the goodness of your hearts?

BTW, you do realise that no amount of back slapping and cameraderie will validate your argument any more than making a logically reasoned defense? Just checking.

Sorry, but I'm keen on round 2. I think this analogy has some legs. As mentioned in another post, the industry in its current form can still afford piracy. The free advertising and freeloading is still adequately balanced by actual sales. But there IS a 'finite number of seats'. At some point, it is theoretically possible that the number of people freeloading will exceed what the market can support 'and the company loses money'. Just like the bus company.

Hey, don't blame me. You filled every seat on that bus with freeloaders.

Juice

Just b.t.w. there are some models that look at filling empty seats with freeloaders when there's good reason.

e.g. a nightclub may have half-price entrance from 8pm to 11pm, then full-price from 11 to 2am, and then free. Why? Coz its likely that some of the guys getting in for free are going to buy drinks and they'll make their money there. They also sometimes use the "girls get in for free" hook, because they KNOW they'll have a queue of guys waiting to get in.

In the Ster-Kinekor example a way back, I'd actually like to see a model that says if half the cinema is empty, anybody who buys a coke and box of popcorn can get in for free (but only during the ads).

If you see things in black and white, you probably only see the negatives attached to situations, often there are oppotunities there if you just take the time to look past your nose. (You meaning nobody in particular).

That's not pirating. You can use your PVR, but do you then have the right to share what you saved with all and sundry?

Having your TV on with guests over is not public viewing, unless you live on main street, and have a 1000" big-screen tv?

Seriously, so just because I don't agree with you, that invalidates my opinion?

It's called sarcasm.

Lets swap to radio then. I can listen to 5fm. Do I have the right to record it? If PVR is ok then surely I can?? Then if we all can listen to 5fm, why can I not distribute my tape of the top 40?

:wtf: you not serious? it's still copy right infrigment even if you have a PVR? :wtf: You are just as bad as the guy who pirate that movie for his/her own viewing.

Depends on the licensing restrictions that 5fm has.
PVR allows you to save for later viewing, that is part of the package that they provide.

eh?
I never said PVR is copyright infringement.

um no. That's not what I said. You still having trouble with the English?:wtf:

I said that your opinion is no more valid despite the amount of back-slapping that you and your other shills give each other.

Can I download a HD version of a movie i have on my PVR?

I don't follow the argument here. You don't own the movie, you own the right to watch the movie on your PVR as long as you are paying Multichoice. If you stop paying them, you don't have access to your PVR.

Can I download a HD version of a movie i have on my PVR?

Yes you can, but it would be illegal.
You would only be licensed to watch the copy that you obtained via your licensed dstv medium.
