OOB shark has got me :( Please Help

Can't believe someone is still trying to defend VC (or MTN's) OOB rates !! By purely saying install this app and that app etc. No respect what so ever for their clients or their money.
I will be ashamed to work for a company like Vodacom or MTN.

A little strange, just received this SMS.

Vodacom Balance Notification. For your information. Account Nr *********, Account Balance has now reached 50.00%.

I've never setup a limit on my contract though, unless there's one by default per client, based on contract/credit record?

That is correct. Each account has a credit limit linked to it.

I don't understand, so I must get a data package on a TopUp contract if I don't want to see the OOB shark? What then of my normal contract I use to phone people with? Does this mean I will have to get 2 SIMS, one for normal contract and one for TopUp? Where is the dual sim phones?

Careful now.

That credit limit is suppose to cover 2 months. = your calls could be cut off next month before your next payment is due....

I'm on a Talk 130 iPhone contract with 250mb of monthly data.

I got my first "data bundle depleted" message on the 17th Feb, but after checking on *111# and online, it seems this message was a mistake.

On the 26th Feb (yesterday), I got another depleted message; checked online and this was accurate. At 22:20, I purchased a MyMeg 100MB to last me the end of the month. At 23:52 last night, I got yet another data depleted message; so I'd used my 100MB on my phone in just over an hour.

Today I contacted Vodacom to inquire and was told I went out of bundle on the 20th of Feb. I've checked my online statement and something's extremely weird.

I've attached my data usage for the last month. My daily average seems to be around 4MB with me peaking at 30MB outside of this odd period. The last 7 days of the month are just ridiculous. I'm not sure how I could've racked up that usage on my phone. I'm on wifi at home and at the office so the only time I'm on 3G is when driving and at mettings.
I'm now stuck with a R2400 total bill :( Can anyone please help me out here?

PM'd you.

Did you by any chance update iOS in the middle of all this?

Are you on 6.1.2 now? Reason I ask is because there was a bug on some devices that caused a data leak when 6.1 came out.

You had to nuke and restore the phone again to fix it, but I believe 6.1.2 has since resolved it all together.

I think there is a default based on contract type.

Ah ok, that's what I thought then.

Thanks, have sent through details.

Fortunately not I guess :) I'm running 6.0 (10A404).

One thing is for sure...get a monthly cap implemented on your contract so that it can't possibly reach R2400 again.

Actually this doesn't help nothing. The cap does not kick in until after the data connection has ended and only then do you get locked which can be too late. Jannie says that's because they don't want to cut you off mid-download something they're very happy to do with prepaid and top up users who have no money in their account.

Probably the best preventative action you take at this stage. Install the apps, and monitor the data usages yourself.

I use an app called 3G Watchdog - not sure if its available for iOS - have a look.

Ok....so then seeing the Iphone dont give proper reports like android...please install Onavo Count soon as you can. This will help track down what app or system process is causing this behaviour. It should also be possible to set a limit...so if you have 500meg...set it to kill your data once 100 is reached or something so you can check what app is doing it and remove it from your phone.

Onavo is a proxying app isn't it? IE, a lot of your traffic is sent via their servers, and I believe it doesn't work for things like streaming/voip etc?

I'm installing DataManPro right now, will see how it works...

You get two versions. Onavo Extend (sends your traffic via their servers for compression) ..... and then Onavo Count....simply tallies your data usage.

Oh poo. I think I may have just wasted money :P

This is exactly why I won't let the missus have anything other than a blackberry until she ports away from vodacon.

another victim. Im so sick of reading about Vodacom and their underhanded bull****.

standing alone, Vodacom dont really seem that bad. Most people have this view and really dont have the time or energy to investigate into other providers, but put Vodacom next to Cell C and you will see the sharp contrast. It's taken me a while, but slowly moving over people I know to Cell C.

And I just wanna say this. OOB shark, Vodacom doesnt give a ****. It's a business model that works for them and I cant even begin to imagine how much revenue this brings in per annum. So whatever BS excuses they bring forth, it really is just a middle finger telling you to mind your own business, that you are the minority and you must shutup.

on a slightly happier note, my 6 month contract expires with Cell C this month. I've been on a Straight Up 400.

I'll be downgrading to a Straight Up 200, which gives me R300 to pump into data, as I get a R500 allowance.

Straight Up 200 (200 anytime min, 200 smses, 200mb data) + 2GB data for R510 a month

Thats MY middle finger to VC.
