OpenOffice 3 ready to battle

A noob question . Whats the low down ? You can view all Open Office docs in Office but not vice versa?

You can view them, I still find that some word documents doesn't format correctly. But hey, I only get those from other n00bs that use MS Word. Some additional features aren't in the spreadsheet module, some forumulas... but who cares, maybe somebody already wrote it, or just create it your self. That's the whole point! I've made some functions that lacked in OO2.

And if you create a ODF file, it will be supported 100% by online Google "Office".

cool! :cool: Why pay for Microsoft online mailbox when Google offers it for free and faster!
 
We use OO here at CapeAds, it does the job pretty well, except there are many times when I have to e-mail this person to who MS Office to open the file because OO doesn't open it properly.

Something that is FREE will not always be PERFECT but as far as PERFECT goes, OO gets very very close.

You can view all Microsoft Office documents in Open Office. However as Microsoft is stingy :p they do not support Open Office document format in Microsoft Office.

To go one step further though you can "save as" in Open Office as a Microsoft Office file format to view it in Microsoft Office so well done to Open Office!! :) in fact you can "save as" a lot of things in Open Office making it so much more user friendly. No more excuses that you can't send someone a format they can't open! :)
 
Well the office 2007 filters should sort the above mentioned problem. But yes, really there are basically nothing in office 2007 that I can't find in OO 2, but then that differs person to person.
 
Been using OO 3 beta 1&2 for a while now, quite happy so far. Though my office use is minimal.. I still type most of my notes in notepad/gnome-editor or vi :)

Just wish everyone could move away from doc/xls and onto odf sooner. :|
 
This is gonna be such an M$ Office beater... cannot wait for the final release.
 
@gdiza: if the people you're e-mailing don't have to edit the document, why not export to pdf?
I personally love openoffice, I've been using it since 1.1. and I can't see any reason to pay M$ for their worthless software, I also can't see why some people pirate MS Office when they could use Openoffice for free. I think most people just don't know about it.
 
And for those that still need to work with other Microsoft Office users, OpenOffice 3.0 includes a full array of Office 2007 format filter, so users can open, edit and save documents in .doc, .xls, .ppt formats among others. OpenOffice 3.0 also work with Office For Mac formats.

I came across Open Office when one of my clients emailed me an ODF file. I was pleasantly surprised to see an Office suite which was free. It didn't look as great as Microsoft, but it did everything that Microsoft could do ... well all that I needed. I first downloaded the MacOSX version and then NeoOffice to run with XCode. Most small firms will definitely go for this rather than spend a few thousand rands on software. With the Beta 3 out, I'm sure the interface will look better. It gets the thumbs up from me.

Cool.. Everybody loves free software but this can be a killer to innovation. Sad to say this but if there is nothing commercial happening and there is no income for the developers I fail to see what will drive innovation in the future of Open Office and Open Source for that matter. Microsoft is evil but they rule the Desktop market and the reason they do is because they innovate. (with hangups and all) If they don't they will die. (maybe soon if I look at Vista which is a piece of crap)
