Under extreme duress I had to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 on a PC. I have to say, installation went smoothly and everything works. (Still, my DLink wireless LAN adapter doesn't...). Now I wanted to install OpenOffice 3. Now realizing this is not Windows, I was prepared for the fact that this was not going to be a "double click on the setup file" operation. Now the final part of the installation goes as follows:

cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Now this is where I get errors about conflicting packages. Would this be because of OpenOffice 2.4 that is installed? How does one uninstall a program?

You uninstall programs Ssytem->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager.

Seach for openoffice and remove it

Is it not in the repositories?? surely synaptic should take care of all your installation and unistall needs? removes all of the hassle, no need to mess around with the terminal at all...

Its too new to be in the repositories. They have to test and QA it first before its just loaded in repos AFAIK

Managed to uninstall OpenOffice 2.4 and got 3.0 working. Honestly, I am a just a little bit more impressed with Ubuntu. (Just a little bit!! :D)

I must say, my excursions with Ubuntu has not been very happy ones. Personally I'm a Gentoo man, was anyway until IBM decided to not release all their software I need for development on Linux anymore
