Does anyone have experience with this product from Openserve?

It seems to be a lower-end solution offered in some areas, with 10/5 or 20/10 speeds.

A 10/5 package is priced at R299pm via Axxess and it would be perfect for my dad, as he doesn't need a faster speed than this.

I'll bolt-on VOIP services for him so he can get away from the horrible wireless Telkom solution he currently has.

If anyone has insight into this solution I'd appreciate some feedback before taking the leap for him.

Thanks

Think they install a WiFi enable ONT. No LAN ports.

Works OK
But all devices connect wirelessly

The ONT has 4 x lan ports and wifi.

Access is via wifi or lan no 3rd party router though.

Web Connect is only available in a few locations and not all Openserve coverage allows Web Connect so it would be coverage dependent.

Thanks - if it has lan ports then this could work for him.

Am I understanding correctly that I won't be able to connect a 3rd party router to the ONT and use the wifi of the router instead of the ONT? So the ONT would have to deliver decent wifi strength on its own?

His area is covered by Webconnect.

You can buy your own router and plug that in yes it will create a double nat though unless you put it in extender mode.

Thanks for the very helpful responses, as always!

Final question - does Afrihost (or any VOIP service provider for that matter) offer call transferring when using VOIP? I ask as this is actually for a small medical practice. My dad's receptionist answers calls and sometimes transfers the call to him. So they'd have two phones linked to the same line. Or is such a feature just phone (and not VOIP provider) dependent?

Is there perhaps a coverage map showing where web connect is available?

This is more a feature of a PBX than a standard VoIP trunk. You can look at an on prem unit or cloud. Drop me a PM if you want more details on the cloud PBX.

Hi @AfriNatic

I see Openserve Webconnect is running a promo with a free month of Webconnect before having the option to then only sign up with an ISP. I may consider this route for my dad's medical practice.

Under ISP partner deals, I don't see Afrihost listed though - are you part of this promo? I.e. could I choose to sign up with Afrihost after this month promo ends? If so, are the once-off activation costs avoided?

Thanks!

Hi,

This is an Openserve promotion and is not limited to Web Connect areas but all Openserve coverage.

When you signup using the Openserve connect app you get installed for free and a Wifi enabled ONT gets installed. The B number gets provisioned for Telkom network and you get 30 days prepaid access at 20Mbps. After the 30 days expire the B number gets moved to the holding pool.

From there you can signup for any ISP for a migration.

If you are covered by Web Connect you can choose Web Connect or Openserve Core. If you choose Web Connect the new ISP will migrate the B number and you will continue service as is. If you signup for Core then the ISP will migrate the line, regrade to the correct speed and supply a router to use with PPPoE.

If you are only covered by Openserve Core then you can only choose a speed starting from 25Mbps from the ISP and then the new ISP will migrate the B number, regrade to correct speed and send a router with PPPoE details.

I hope this makes sense on how the promotion works. It's a really great promo from Openserve. Allows clients to experience the Openserve network with zero commitment and get installation done for FREE.

Thanks! Certainly makes sense.

Just to be clear on the activation fee of R575 for Afrihost on Webconnect - I presume this cost wouldn't fall away though by using this promo and migrating to Afrihost after the free 30 days?

Ah ok thanks.

Reason for me asking is because it shows the R575 fee as applicable when I was on the "choose package" screen for the address in question.

Hi,

Not sure how I missed your response so sorry for the late response. That doesn't look correct to me but let me confirm for you from our Ops team.

No worries - I forgot to click "reply" to your post so you probably didn't get a notification.

Thanks for following up.

Hi,

Just a follow up. Confirmed that the activation fee is indeed correct and we do charge it for Web Connect migrations.
