The best I've found was BOUML

Had to use Visio last semester and there are times where M$ does have a good product. Actually doing a Visio course through netcampus soon.

I hated it and it was buggy as hell

Hi There,
You didnt indicate what diagrams you are trying to create.
An alternative though not free is SmartDraw You can download a demo version to evaluate it.
I also found this site highlighting how good an alternative from Sourceforge is compared to visio.

Of course if you are looking at doing plans etc you should also look at Google Sketchup.
