Openweb 10mb Uncapped Silver

I currently have 1x 4mb Mweb Uncapped Account running on my 10mb line for usenet downloads and then using a local (IS Local) and international (Afrihost Capped) splitting setup on a Mikrotik RouterBOARD to route my HTTP and HTTPS protocols so my browsing speed runs at line speed instead of being limited by the 4mb Uncapped account.

Now I have two options

1) I get an additional 4mb MWeb Uncapped Account and use 2x 4mb Mweb accounts for usenet and leave the traffic splitting as is for browsing.

2) I get a single 10mb OpenWeb Uncapped Silver account and not worry about routing traffic over the capped accounts.

I would probably be doing about 500GB of traffic a month so avg 16GB a day and don't mind if my usenet downloads run slower during the day (slow being a decent mb speed and not kb) as long as I get close to live speed on browsing.

So... should I go with a OpenWeb 10mb Uncapped Silver or will this account not work for me?

I'm pretty that gets limited to 256kb during the day.

Why don't you go to their site and see. I'll even help you out:

I did read the info regarding the account and there is no mention of 256k during peak hours.

We at OpenWeb are very leniant with our Fair Usage Policy for Silver and Gold uncapped packages. Silver Uncapped is a shaped service, and generally, during office hours, heavy download protocols will take the lowest priority on the network. However, we believe that when the network is quiet, our clients should have full access to it. Thus, during quieter times, like after hours, we try and offer an optimal experience. Thus, there is no actual fair usage policy, other than the fact that download protocols will be shaped during busy periods. However, when the network is quiet, you will be offered an unshaped experience!

I would however like to hear from people who have actually used this package as I have never used any OpenWeb package before and don't feel like spending R1700 for something that will not do what I want.

I've used both - 1mbps though - hands down MWEB in my honest opinion. Better latency, better top speed, far less down time

@Stonecold - sorry, my OW Gold had down time due to the upstream provider, DSL Heaven, if you're on the IS backbone it's pretty stable but the speeds and latency are not on par with MWEB.

"One quick email and it's sorted if problems do arise" - you are quite lucky, they don't track emails at all, and I've had to send a number of emails and simply get told that they didn't receive my emails (my past mybb posts I have expressed my distaste at their lack of professional support systems).

If you're wanting professional service, go MWEB, if you have the time to change upstream providers (once per month), and send multiple support queries because your emails get "lost" (i'm not the only one this happens to, just read through the forums), in addition to spending a lot of time on the mybb forums seeing if you're the only one who is experiencing issues; as well as if you don't really want to see your usage stats, or like to set up usage tracking of your own (yes it's uncapped so "why do you need to know" - simple answer is: Because i like to know, why shouldnt i? It's nice to see whether or not it's worth while being on uncapped, or just how much I managed to get through in the month) - then OW is fine.

Otherwise MWEB. As I said from the beginning, it's my honest opinion and i'll add that this is based on my experience - if you had a better experience, then great - but I certainly didnt.

OpenWeb can't help but give you the feeling that you're dealing with a 1 man show, and I don't have time for it.

If you want to see for yourself - go ahead and try them out.

This is indeed your opinion.

I have been with them for many many years, and last month I moved all my company lines over to the them. I can honestly say, they are superb. Their support centre is friendly, courteous and get the job done.

Naturally, you are not used to having access to the ISP ceo, re your comment : "OpenWeb can't help but give you the feeling that you're dealing with a 1 man show". If the ceo gets involved, and answers normal client queries, it does not mean it's a 1 man show. It means that there is 1 man that cares. Try and contact your Mweb ceo. You will need to go through 42 well paid PA's before he even considers your existence.

Our lines in Cape Town have a local latency of 5ms. I am sorry, when we were with Mweb, we never ever received latencies this low. Mweb overshapes even after hours. My Gold home account is almost unshaped after hours and weekends. Torrents run at full speed. I never experienced this with Mweb.

I respect your opinion, and am glad you respect ours. OpenWeb is an exemplary ISP. I can honestly say, they have the clients interest at heart.

Is there no one out there that uses the Uncapped Silver package :-/

I see the thread title has changed. Openweb is month to month. I say give it a try. The reason no one uses it is because almost no one has a 10meg line. I can get 7meg on my line, but won't but a 10meg uncapped on there for example. I'll wait till a 6meg package gets released.

Why not email MrBeep and ask him for a trial 10mb uncapped silver account for 24 hour / 12 hours?

I'm sure he'll comply with such a request :)

Nope, he said that they no longer do that as users abuse it, so I'll have to get input from users.
