Openweb 30Gb All access accounts

cable guy - chavez raises a good question though. Why have differential pricing for ADSL rental and then get hit again for your line speed choice when you have to download data?

EDIT: If I had refreshed before posting I would have seen ic's post.

Though for R71 more than OpenWeb's 1024k product, I would probably go with Gatecrasher's idea and get 3 x 10GB WA accounts to get my full 4mb line speed and SAIX access.

If network conditions are favourable, absolutely! Speeds will be a little faster.

All IS accounts are shaped identically, contrary to popular belief. Thus the shaping would be similar.

I am currently working on a reduced price for the 1024k account. Wish me luck.

Mr Beep is a big boy, he can take the crit. This is free market research.

My question then is would it be possible to get faster speeds than 512k on the 512k product? At 3am on a Monday morining for example? I know that on 512k and 1024k uncapped products, many people report much higher speeds during offpeak times.

Secondly, would p2p be shaped much as the uncapped products are? ie murdered during office hours, but reasonably accessible during off-peak hours?

Regardless of the debate, 10 out 10 for innovation, Openweb!

It's just a simple calculation

Openweb
512k - R989
1024k - R1399

Telkom 3GB account (runs till +-6gb these days )
6gb x 5 = 30gb = R239 x 5 = R1195 no speed limit

Webafrica 10GB account
10gb x 3 = 30gb = R490 x 3 = R1470 no speed limit

therefore 512k package is cheap and viable.
1024k package is a bit expensive consider the speed limit.
So my suggestion will be to relook at the 1024k package to make it more competitive. Maybe even consider selling only the 512k package.

Why on earth do we pay MORE or less for the SAME AMOUNT of bandwidth depending on your line speed?!?!?!? Can someone PLEASE explain the logic in that?
It's quite simple actually. Companies up the chain buy line speed and not bandwidth. They have to split users across that bandwidth so the faster your line, the less people can share the upstream providers line. Hypothetically, a provider may be able to sell 10 x 512K accounts against a certain line as opposed to 5 x 1024K accounts on the same line. The reason for the limits on bandwidth serves two purposes. First, it stops one client using up the whole line and secondly, it gives an upstream provider the ability to sell more accounts against the same line.

My point from the beginning was and still is that I already pay more for my faster line through the DSL line rental. So there's no need to charge me more for usage on the network based on line speed. That's effectively double charging.

That problem lies with Telkom. They are charging you for the line. IS are supplying the bandwidth and also have to pay Telkom. The problem here is that Telkom are charging you for a line rental where they should not be charging you. Normally that fee would go to the data provider so you would only pay once. Telkom found a nice loophole to add an extra charge that effectively costs them nothing. In fact, IS pay for the peering link between Telkom and IS which in any other country would be payed by the line provider.

just when i thought i was screwed from canceling ODS uncapped [R1368, 512k]

i see this 30G int/local from openweb [R989, 512k] which will still save me.

i didn't use my uncapped anyways to its uncappedness, +/-20G to 30G some months i can rather use this openweb 30G int/local costing allot less.

thumbs up i say to openweb.

What about me? :P

I was just wondering if there is a reason why no one uses 2Gig Telkom accounts anymore, I mean its cheaper isnt it:

8 Accounts at 4Gigs/Account = 32Gigs @ R1192p.m.
which can be worked out as R1117.50 for 30Gigs (ok so its only +-R80)

I have compiled many spreadsheets trying to decide whether or not 3/6Gig accounts would be a better option but have found that the 2Gig option is always cheaper per Gig compared to the 3Gigs.

Please feel free to enlighten me! ;)
