OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Due to the Telkom IPC outage today, there is quite a large backlog on the network. This may result in shaping on torrents after hours.

We are hoping this will clear overnight.

**** my router :mad: Last night my download queue couldn't be cleared because my crappy router got disconnected from my ISP for some reasons. Definitely not Openweb's fault. :)
 
So I queried OpenWeb cancellations for proof of my acceptance of their terms and conditions. I got the following reply :

"This information can be attained from our legal team, unpaid account will be handed over to collections.
[email protected]
OpenWeb Cancellations Department"

Why the threat on unpaid accounts ? Totally unnecessary, but just reaffirms that I won't do business with them again.
 
MrBeep, who can we harass to get Azure servers in South Africa, this game is amazeballs, but best ping i got to EU was around 200ms, which makes me sad. I'm busy doing my part, twit spamming the crap out of them ;)

This game I tell you, I want it and I want it NOW!!!!

Gaming Server setups are based on demand.

If we see a high demand, it will make sense for us to setup some local servers on our core backbone for a sweet ping!

Ja, always blame Telkom. At least other ISPs aren't that swak!

One would assume you would try forgo your legal obligation to pay, seeing as you are foolishly playing hardball. Pray tell, did you not read the t's and c's when you signed the contract?

Why would torrent shaping affect House of Cards?

Netflix hasn't skipped a beat. Been watching a few episodes everyday since it came out.
 
What I meant was, I don't see the other ISPs consistently and repeatedly saying "Its Telkom". Also I don't actually follow Afrihost's dealings on this forum. The last while I was with MWEB, they didn't blame Telkom each time I had an issue, nor did another ISP I tried, known as Axxess.

I have fiddled a bit with routers and their firmware.
1) Cheaper routers have crap firmware "slapped together" from firmware they copy from Netgear and others. So they try and shoe-horn open source code onto their crappy Chinese processor, without checking for memory leaks, endian-ness issues, etc... The "Free" cybersmart router they used to issue a few years back, is a cheap and nasty router, which has portions of code copied from Netgear's stock routers. In the past, TP LINK did this aswell, but they have now learnt from this and make a fairly decent product, I was quite surprised. Their codebase appears to have been largely optimized for their target CPU, and is stable.

2) The actual DSL modem part, is cheap in some routers, and therefore not of the same quality as one might get from people whose business is modems i.e. companies such as Conexant and Lantiq. Poor implementations of modulation schemes, I have seen, frequently causes issues. The cybersmart router I mention, it has a hardware flaw that prevents it from being used on a 10MBps ADSL circuit or MSAM, it will synch but the download direction is very slow as in 1kbyte/sec, while the upload direction is fast. This is a hardware flaw in the DSL modem chip.
 
I'm closing my OW 'Gold' uncapped 2MB account. I'm sick of Youtube defaulting to 144p and often not even being able to stream 360p. When I first had the account it was, as the name implied, gold. These days all it causes me is frustration, and even on weekends it's dog slow. I've been given a few different accounts, which all seem to resolve the problem for a few days, and then back to slowness.

Had enough, moving elsewhere.

This is going to be the game of the year. It's the only game that everyone's talking about.
 
so,what is the best modem/router to get?

i thinking of selling my crappy trednet and getting that tplink that was posted here
