OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Ja, always blame Telkom. At least other ISPs aren't that swak!

Dat troll.

So if Telkom is to blame, they cannot point the finger in that direction? MrBEEP is usually up front about whats happening and always pops in to let his clients know if something is wonky.

MWEB will just ask for your account name. While MrBEEP does the same, I know I am not talking to a robot like I had with MWEB (who try to adopt a cold, professional stance with no real answers).

What is considered as a good ping with online games? (before lag begins)

... I wonder what causes such router to be disconnected at random times from the Internet until they are manually restarted to get online back.
Common reason is a noisy line, easy to check. Get the dial tone on your handset and press 1 (or any other number), the line should be totally quiet. If you hear "bacon frying" or similar noises report it to Telkom faults and hope you get a techie that's prepared to climb a few poles to track down and eliminate the cause.

Could a hardware issue with the router (D-Link DSL2750U) result in the need for constant router resets? In the last few days, I've need to get the port reset by Telkom, or leave the router off for 30 minutes at a time to get pings down to normal levels. After a few minutes, they shoot up again. It's high at the second hop, which leads me to conclude it's an exchange issue, but I wanted to get some feedback from the group here on whether it could be a hardware issue. I've not had a single issue with this router thus far, but it is at one end of the link that's going Fong Kong, so it needs to be considered in the equation.

Fault is logged with Telkom and I've PMed TelkomZA here. No Twitterz for me.

I have had this exact experience - heres the thing - the Belkin router would not handle a noisey line, Netgear didnt even battle, so sure, I agree - and add that a good quality router makes all the difference.
getting Telkom to climb poles - well thats the hard part ... took a year to get that fixed.

From yesterday my daytime speeds is up and down. Same as 2 weeks ago. Support then tested my account for a week, and after that the account was much better, only for a week. And now again the same. Tested with FNB connect, and it runs 100% as it should, so no problem with my router, line or exchange.

It gets so bad that no website opens, local or international. Blank page and circle on tabs just turns and turns. Sites took between 3 and 4 minutes to open. And this goes on the whole day between 8 and 5, up and down.

And the funny thing is when i connect my phone via wifi to same adsl line, no problem, sites open fast and gmails come it. Still need to test downloading from phone to see speed.

And different protocols will have different speed problems, remote desktop will be so slow that i can't work on the server, but my vpn connection to the database will fly, and half an hour later the vpn is so slow that db updates take minutes to get done, put the remote desktop is perfect.

Contacted support, all i get is that he tested the line and it is fine on browsing, but when a download starts, browsing is slow. duh, all that proves is that the network is congested. I can do that on my other account, 3g, FNB connect and my browsing speed is not affected at all. O, and that I have downloaded 14 gigs today, yes i did, my downloads run from 21h00 till 7h00, but from after 7 till 5 only 900 megs. It is an uncapped account, and i got it to download, but not in the daytime. And what i download after hours got nothing to do with the problem i have on the daytime speed.

Openweb's network is overloaded with too many users, and they are trying to control it with shaping. But still selling more and more accounts. It will not work, go and look what happened to Chillie uncapped, put way too many clients on their network, and the speed was horrendous, and the clients packed their bags and left.

If you download during peak shaping times, your browsing too will be shaped.

This is a policy that has been in existence for years.

No it is not. Our network is closely monitored and upgraded regularly.
