OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Browsing will not shape your line.

Downloads will shape browsing when the network is very busy, like today.

On a shaped account, we recommend you schedule the downloads for after 19:00 and on weekends.

This sounds an awful lot like throttling the user, for simply downloading, though, not shaping.

I've tried to understand what protocols are usable during business hours, but I don't seem to ever get an aswer:

All I require is browsing, some Steam downloads (on the odd occasion, which I assume "shapes" my line) and Youtube. Are they no-go?

Getting 70% packet loss in CS:GO... Speedtests and MTR shows line is fine. Skype is fine too, just CS.

Our shaping does not add packet loss, ever.

We would need to look into this for you.

Can you please drop us a mail: [email protected]

Please include, if possible, a tracert to the server affected

It is with sadness that I submitted my cancellation for my OpenWeb account.

I have a 4Mbps Gold Uncapped (Power) & it is totally unusable during the day with speeds reaching that of a dial-up modem.

After 17h00 (Which happens to coincide with the end of OpenWeb's business hours), everything flies & it is sometimes possible to reach 8Mb on a Speed Test.

The calendar month's notice has been given, so all I can say now is:

"So long & thanks for all the fish"

Sadly, I may be going the same way. The service I've received is amazing, probably the best I've ever experienced. But the product has been on the decline from when I first signed up 2/3 years ago. Can't stand the IS shaping. It's tighter than Dewani's poephol in prison during the day, and suddenly the flood gates open at 17:00. Downgraded to standard uncapped as I felt I wasn't receiving value for money. Honestly, very little difference. Time to go looking in the other ISP threads.

Uncapped Gold on the VB backbone, how I miss thee.

I have been with Openweb for about 6 years. Had problems very rarely but I was always up and running again in no time. The support was always excellent. Last few months things have gotten really bad. Browsing is fine but trying to download anything is difficult to impossible especially during the day. I get 25Kb/s if I'm lucky on anything. Tonight I'm crawling along at 7Kb/s.

I understand it's a shaped product but when it constantly shaped to such an extent that it's essentially useless and then my browsing also gets affected is just not worth it to pay the extra money for Gold. I'm basically paying double so I can browse. I have contacted support 4 times but I just get told it's a shaped account etc Then I get told that I should get a capped account for day time use. So I have sent my cancellation in as well. It's really a pity because I would really rather stay with Openweb as I said I've always received excellent service except for the last few months but the Gold accounts don't cater to my needs anymore and the business account is too expensive and I don't like the idea of returning to a capped account. So there really is no other option than to leave.

Well. It's already 9pm and downloads are still running at dial-up speed, like its been for the last 2 weeks since I got my 2Mbps Gold Uncapped (Power). Some nights I might get upto 1Mbps speeds but only late at night after 11pm if I'm lucky.
Gaming performance has also dropped massively the last few nights. Titanfall can't keep a connection and keeps dropping from the server. Elder Scrolls Online can't even start up tonight because the 40MB update is downloading at 2KB/s WHEN it get's a connection at all.
Youtube can't even maintain a stream at 144p.
Running a speed test I get proper speeds to local servers, but basically loose connections I try to make to international servers.

I was with WA before this and, despite their throttling that got a bit ridiculous, I still had better speed in the evenings.
If things don't pick up by the end of this month, I sadly will have to move on as well....again.

:wtf: 9.30pm 2MB Gold uncapped running at less than 50KB/s on HTTP download

3rd night in a bloody row

Switched to my 1MB Mweb account running at average 95KB/s

What is going on, this is bloody ridiculous.

So I did a speed test on OW, get full speed on the 2MB line for the test, yet still getting slow HTTP download.

Same file from same site on 1MB Mweb account and it runs at full speed on download, so it is clearly not the download link being the issue.

Obviously an Openweb issue.

What is Openweb's support for Azubu like? I'm trying to stream at 720p on a 4meg line and it's stuttering.

Looking at my traffic graphs it looks like you may need to drop your quality a bit.

This is live stream on 720p:

4mb Gold account here and all downloads are ahaped to about half line speed despite it being almost 11pm. Torrents appear to be even more adversely affected.

Playing Diablo earlier pings were bad and browsing HTTP the initial page load is delayed.

This is the 2nd night in a row. Please assist.

How does a tracert look?

Not bad really.

Scrap that. 11:01pm and everything came right again. Downloads and browsing are back to normal.

Seems fishy to me. I"ll have to keep an eye open tomorrow evening to see if it happens again.

After 11pm still nothing works for me, cant browse or even stream anything. Any indication as to what is going on would be nice.

I don't think its worth cancelling, hey. The grass isn't green on the other side. All ISPs seem to be battling with contention. Internet in South Africa all over is in a very bad state.

Update from yesterday; new account given for testing until Tuesday. All good for now.
