OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

At the end of the day, OW and others are merely resellers of IS products. The problem for me is, this is beginning to feel more and more like over subscription. I am paying for uncapped gold orange, but I sure as hell aint getting what is advertised. A gentle warning to Openweb, one of these days some of your users will take you to ISPA, it certainly is moving in that direction...

That is exactly the problem, they have way too many customers, but who cares OpenWeb makes more money with all the new signups. As long as they get more money they wont give a rats ass about your problems. That is the general rule with companies like OpenWeb. They 'fix' your problems but at the end of the day nothing gets done and you have to fend for yourself and try to find some solution as to what the hell is going on.

Quite weird how i have no problems today whatsoever:

WEIRD. Its never a OpenWeb problem, its always Telkom. Glad i canceled that fault log with telkom else i OpenWeb would've payed for the unnecessary call out fee from the technician.

I don't know why some people would be shaped today, traffic looks exactly like it would on a weekend today. No shaping on my side.

Shaped to 10%...........Keoma..........When will you buy more bandwidth so your GOLD customers get preference........

Lovely internet service from Openweb as usual. Can't even browse anything or load Speedtest, nothing. Just great! Even upgraded to a Gold Uncapped account thinking it'll be better..

I am still unable to browse or watch youtube videos yet NNTP runs at full line speed? Please explain this?

I cancelled my account this morning.

Lots of Telkom faults this morning I see.[/url]

No telkom fault in my area (as other accounts work perfectly fine) just a degraded and constantly deteriorating service from Openweb.

On a 10mbps Gold Leon Uncapped for R829/mth, I'm getting no more than 150kbps throughput on any and all protocols. This stinks.

If that is true, then I think your definition of dynamic is different to that found in the dictionary. I don't understand how it can be crap till 5pm. Then magically the taps open. I highly doubt the network just gets quiet at that exact time. Also, I've been with openweb for 2-3 years. This is the first time in that time that video streaming is shaped in office hours. It used to be that you could easily watch something on supersport in office hours. Now you get throttled to 40KBps, even if you haven't downloaded a single thing all day. Just done some everyday browsing.

I use the term throttling because that is what you're doing even though you advertise it as shaping. Yes, there might be one or two things not shaped, but so much is so darn slow that you get less than 10% of your package's speed. I think the fact that you won't even be honest and upfront about it makes it even worse. I remember a few months back when mrbeep spoke quite often about a new shaping policy that has been implemented due to people abusing certain protocols to bypass shaping. Now here you come and say nothing has changed.

We are not stupid. We are consumers of your products and we deserve to be treated as such. Not lied to time and time again.

Yes, after 5pm my Internet is wonderful. But I'm not paying for an after hours account. I'm paying R499 a month for 4Mbps. If I wanted an after hours account, I'd get one. I'm not home every day. I don't download in the day. I do however expect to be able to get more than 10% of what I'm paying for, on my days off, etc.

I totally understand that you have business clients who need fast Internet during the day. But what I also understand and what I think openweb doesn't understand is that you're advertising a product but you do things that are unethical towards the clients who are not business clients. You should say in all your ads, "No throttling, ever!" but also add "Don't expect more than 10% of your purchased speed during office hours for everything!"

Then I'd like to see how many people take up any openweb packages. Every package that isn't a business package should be sold as after hours packages.

If you use this term with support, they will reply that this isn't the case, and they'll be right, as IMHO, you're experiencing high contention within your "data pool".

My advise, get a connection account, at almost half the price and even on a 2-3 star status, will run rings around your account you're suffering with now.

I'm in a generous mood at the moment (good old Jack Daniels ;)), and am willing to give away a 4mb uncapped account (which is pro-rata for the month so only like R100, and I can cancel it immediately so it terminates at month end), so if you interested, PM me?

it will just give me great joy to prove that OW's uncapped account's are highly overrated!

There freedom unshaped capped accounts ROCK tho I must say :)

My feelings exactly. As much as 'ol cableguy over here wants to blame IPC for shaping being a reality the fact is that shaping is becoming significantly worse and worse even on the premium subscriptions, yet they want to still charge the same premium. I'm sorry, but that just doesn't fly in ANY private service industry.

@cableguy: Let me make this abundantly clear on behalf of myself and others on here since you still don't seem to quite get what we're saying here:

- We understand there must be shaping. I am personally not opposed to being shaped during normal 8am-5pm business hours, although the level of shaping during this period (i.e. 10% of line speed) is a little excessive (especially on a Gold acc)

- After business hours (when I use my internet most) I expect to be unshaped and capable of using my line to the fullest extent. I don't mind if you deem peak hours to end at 6 or 7pm, but 11pm/12am is ridiculous.

- Do not move the goalposts as you please. Do not provide a service that people are willing to pay for and then later without consultation with your clients make that service significantly poorer.

- Stop the excuses. Do not lie about traffic/dynamic shaping when it's easy to prove that it is time of day based. Do not try to extort more money out of clients by suggesting they upgrade.

Kindly take the above to Keoma, Leon, Leoni and whoever the hell else needs to see this to effect some changes. I'll mention this a 3rd time: You're becoming MWEB. Look at their reputation and see where you're heading.

I couldn't agree more with this!

Just as I left mweb when their service became shocking, so too I will leave openweb. I'm on the original gold uncapped package and will submit my cancellation forms on Tuesday. It seems obvious that they've oversold their "gold uncapped" package and there's way too many people in each data pool. Their solution? Tell the customer to upgrade their package! If they say no, then blame telkom...

Does anyone have an idea of what the current contention ratios are for their differing packages?

Today

Standard 1meg Mweb account running HTTP download at average 95KB/s

2meg OW Gold Uncapped running same download at average 25KB/s

Last night average 55KB/s until 11pm when i watched it slowly increase over a few seconds to full line speed.
Could almost set me clock to it.

:wtf: am i paying R398 for ????

And to think i actually complimented OW earlier this month.
Luckily i am on credit card top up so no cancellations involved.

That's dynamic shaping for you.. Everyone else on openweb must have stopped browsing the web and paused their downloads at precisely 11pm. Every night. It's bedtime, no?

I mean, what else could it be? After all, it's not like openweb would lie to us! They've been nothing but honest and transparent when explaining how their shaping policy works...

I've been told that shaping is in effect and things will let up around 19:00 tonight. On Good Friday. When internet load is demonstrably in keeping with a weekend day. How do you spell over subscription?

Have been helped by Zelda, involves powering down router for 30 minutes. Probably will give temporary relief but no doubt things will be back to garbage in a few days.

Decided to cancel, show my discontent with my wallet. Things are not going to get better but the spin from the top will surely continue.

Leoni did the same for me. No difference.

Back onto my 3g now as cannot browse at all today - nothing else is running currently. I managed to download a 3.7mb firmware update file for one of my devices, which ran at 2.3kb and took over 30 minutes to complete, again with nothing else running. Come on guys, what's going on!?
Also posting this via 3g as nothing loads on ADSL...

My mweb monthly 5gb free account is finished now and I refuse to buy an mweb booster 1.5gb for R99.
Will try get an Axxess or similar prepaid till the end of the month, just so I can browse and d/l during the day...

Hi ... try the 2Mbs Connect R99 special account as a stop-gap... https://www.connection.co.za/ or their 20GB R49 capped special as well.
